GODSHATTER, written in capitals, meaning "pieces of a god in one's head" is taken from a prize- winning, galaxy-spanning science fiction novel by Vernor Vinge, A Fire upon the Deep (1995). There, a god-like being uses a human as an unwilling agent to carry out an arcane agenda. This theme of transcendence and dehumanizing manipulation ties in with the seminal, Neon Genesis: Evangelion animé and manga, which inspired this song. GODSHATTER is an adventure, an electronic expedition into preternatural terra incognita.
STEVE BALTES' emotionally charged, driving tech-noir electronic composition, which also inspired LUCIAN ZÄYN'S lyrics, opens up a boundless soundscape for Zäyn's mercurial voice to explore, in English and Japanese. The panoramic instrumental fittingly portrays the darkly luminescent, dangerous transcendence of Evangelion, shining a light on glittering pieces of a god, inescapably lodged in the brain, threatening to explode at any instant.
GODSHATTER is the first single and one of three songs dealing with Evangelion on BALTES & ZÄYN'S upcoming BLUE SUNSET album. Set against a panorama of imminent Apocalypse, perfectly evoked by the instrumental backing, the song portrays the glory and horrors of being an EVA pilot in terms of the human drama and familial trauma afflicting mechawarrior child, Shinji, in the hands of his manipulative father, Gendo, who conspires to bring godhood to humanity, at the cost of destroying it, just to reunite with his dead wife, Yui, Shinji's mother. Driven by overweening hubris, Gendo instrumentalizes and sacrifices his own son to achieve god-like transcendence. Zäyn has an album of songs written in the last 20 years, inspired by Evangelion, illuminating selected, evocative aspects, embellishing and reading between the lines, such as GODSHATTER does.
