    The Central was the main line that ran within fifty feet of Emery's bedroom when he was a child. It didn't matter that it was the outermost track of a casually used switch yard, it was still a main line to him.
    During Emery's developing years, when he could afford a camera and film money, he moved to Dearborn, Michigan. Now he was in the big time--on a real main line! The Michigan Central ran through Dearborn, but in most circles it was known as The New York Central System.
    Most of this Odyssey is from film generated in Detroit and the adjacent vicinity. Next Emery's interest trickled down to Ohio, predominately Toledo, which is on the Central's MAIN main line.
    After Toledo, Emery encountered locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. These outlying encounters were usually in conjunction with other railfan destinations. So sit back and enjoy the Central as Emery saw it.

    7:00 It’s crazy how much a place can change in a matter of 50 years. The Ann Arbor station area is now single tracked, six Amtraks and one NS local per day. I love seeing how the line I film on such a regular basis today was once like, in a time when freight was much more prominent and trains had much more diversity.

    Great to see the Toledo Central Union Terminal back when all tracks were still in use. NYC ran a lot of passenger trains. I've never heard of, "The Michiganer."

I have several Green Frog DVDs, including "Steam in the 50's (you do know that's supposed to be " '50s," right?)" and its sequel, "________the '60s," plus "Classic Steam of the _____________." Somehow, this one REALLY got to me. I'll DEFINITELY have to check out the rest of your CZcams goodies!

  • @trainknut
    @trainknut Před 7 lety +10

    As nice as it is to watch NYC passenger trains and express freight blasting along the water level route, I just can't watch videos of them without thinking about how terrible their management was screwing things at this time, in just a few years they would purge all steam from their routes in an attempt to wipe them from memory, and not only put themselves into an economic flat spin, but also drag Pennsy down with them.
    Yeah, arguably Pennsy was also in it's own downward spiral, but then the two already failing companies crashed into each other in the horribly organized Penn-Central merger, and it would eventually lead to their ultimate destruction, they had to be bailed out by Conrail, and eventually sold to NS and CSX, not successor companies, like Chessie was to B&O, or NS was to N&W, just a government bailout that was later split equally between two random competitors.

      @b3j8 Před 5 lety +1

      If you mean the old style autoracks themselves looked unbalanced, they weren't. But, all those new cars in them were sitting ducks for vandalism. Those substantial losses were the primary reason the covered version was developed.

    Did Emery Gulash who did shot a lot of footage over the years also professionally edited and added music , and narration or was it done by green frog productions ?

    • @GreenFrogVideos
      @GreenFrogVideos  Před 8 lety +2

      Emery shot 16mm film and in a lot of cases he would also record audio "wild" (not synced) at the same time on a reel to reel "portable" (for the day) tape recorder. Emery would then write up a script for editing for a program with locations and train numbers etc. for green Frog, then we would edit the transferred film and add Emery's sound-FX and also add music from sound libraries.

    • @GreenFrogVideos
      @GreenFrogVideos  Před 6 lety +1

      There are a few high speed Steam runs in this video at the start, but any audio is dubbed from Emery's sound library. Back in those days one of the few ways to record audio was to drag a "portable" reel to reel recorder with you, which of course was quite labor intensive and time consuming to set up!
