    I worked for a guy in 1966 who had a 3/4 ton pickup. We loaded old cast iron radiators until it wouldn’t hold anymore. When we went to the scales the entire truck and load weighed 10,500+ lbs. The truck had the best 6ply tires. ALL FOUR TIRES had “goose egg like” swellings around the bead. We never did that again!

    The bump stops look like sumo springs and are designed to carry some weight before suspension is totally maxed out. That could explain why the ride seems smoother. Thank you for sharing and have a great day.

    I did similiar project recently. Came across some vinyl planking in Oregon for 1.77$ (no sales tax! pre inflation pricing). Installed it in my Whitefish unit. My 1/2 ton truck is perfect for my lifestyle.

    I have a 2010 Tundra base 4x4 Dbl Cab with 6.5' bed. The most load I've had in it was a load of mulch from the local county waste transfer station. Sidenote at end with more details on what that is. Anyway I wasn't thinking about weight at all when I went to get the mulch. There are scales for entering and leaving the transfer station so that they can get the weight for billing purposes. I know my Tundra is about 5700 pounds with nothing in the bed and has a payload of 7100 pounds. Not thinking about the weight the load range C tires were inflated to the normal 39psi I keep them at instead of 44psi max for max load. Well, when I came across the leaving scales I remember my Tundra was about 500 pounds over its max GVWR. It did handle the weight fine, no ill handling traits considering the circumstances. Wasn't even on the bump stops, but I definately took a slower route home in order to keep speeds and tire temperatures down.
    In a second story, my brother used to work at a Lowes in the lawn and garden department. I've heard some stories. They would make customers sign waivers if they demanded loading something rediculous into the wrong vehicle. The one story I remember was when someone had them load a pallet of pavers, over 3000 pounds, into the back of a CR-V or something similar. The finished loading the pavers and the little SUV drove about 10 feet and all four tires blew out.

    I put an entire pallet of stepping stone blocks in the back of my 2005 f150. Also it was rear loaded because of my tool box. 3k lbs, was definately maxed and a little sketchy. Thankfully we only had to drive 4 miles home. I dont think i would do it again.

  • @FulltimingBrinkley3950

    JD, could REAALLYY use your advice and input on a heavy duty truck. The plan is to order a Brinkley Model G toy hauler (that’s the plan at THIS POINT in life, but definitely a 40 foot plus 5th wheel) and be full time Rv’ing in the next 3 years (I work at NASA and need to finish out my mission before I leave). I also need time to pay off my truck before leaving NASA, so I’m purchasing now rather than later. So my question; I ordered a 2024 Ram 3500 Limited Mega Cab with the high output Cummins with dual rear wheels. My heart is with Ford (currently own a 2022 F-150 Limited) but I ordered a Ram because I feel it’ll take to long to get a Ford Super Duty. Is the Ram I ordered going to be good enough, and get me around the US without issues whether it be hills or flat land? And is the 6 speed Aisin really that big of a problem as I’ve read, and will make me regret not getting a Ford? I’ve never driven let alone sit inside a Ram, which blind purchases sometime aren’t good. Someone like you I completely trust, and I know you are very knowledgeable and provide good sound advice. Could really use someone’s advice that isn’t biased and just good ole background and knowledge. Thank you, and I love your videos! Take care.

  • @jordanchailland8444

    The sticker on the door is not the true axle rating. The AAM 9.5 and 9.76 have a factory gross axle weight rating around 6000lbs. The limiting factor for gm on our trucks is the suspension and tires. GM built in an axle safety margin of about half of the true axle rating.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  Před rokem +2

      Remember the axles capacity must account for dynamic weight while driving. This can exceed 2-3x the static weight.

    • @jordanchailland8444
      @jordanchailland8444 Před rokem +1

      I do agree with that. I would think AAM would have also thought of that when applying their max gross axle weight rating if someone else was to come in and buy the same axle from them for another use. This same axle could be found on many older gm 2500's. The leaf spring packs on my 2020 gmc 1500 3.0l are limited to 1900lb per side if I remember correctly when I was looking at adding helper springs. Do you know if the max tow has an upgraded rear gross axle rating because it's spring pack looks to be 2200lbs per side?

    Genuine suggestion. Your definition of “big RV” is effectively a boxy 5th wheel. You tend to ignore what I have discovered is a hot topic…. towing a 30 ft Airstream with a half ton truck. In other words, a 30 foot 5th wheel that is 14 feet tall is very different than a 30 foot Airstream. Both in terms of weight and aerodynamics. I’ve been towing a 30 foot Airstream with an F150 (tow package) with no issues for 5 yrs. I saw you on KYD once and also saw them weigh their Airstream with a F250. The trailer weight came in at 6500 lbs at the CAT scales. In other words, a F250 is too much for that weight. It’s almost embarrassing to tow 7000 lbs with a HD truck given modern truck engineering. I know your part of the “payload police” but as an engineer, the payload has a safety buffer in the US. Payload is different in different countries depending on what they require. Do you even know how Ford calculates payload? I’m not referring to taking GVWR and subtracting/adding other numbers provided by the manufacturer. I’m referring to how is payload determined in terms of the vehicle itself. Point being, you’re not entirely accurate with your assessments, or you just hate Airstreams. Why? They’re made in the USA and are as iconic as the Model T and Henry Ford himself. And I already know your default comment to this comment…. If you’re comfortable with it then it’s all good. Ask an engineer how they calculate payload in the USA and maybe you’ll learn something. I firmly believe you’re the perfect consumer from a manufacturer’s perspective. You’ll believe anything they say and keep buying their products because of it. Any chance your in the market to buy a bridge?

    That poor rear axle is going to have bearing issues for sure. 3900lbs is all that axle is rated for. Exceeding it will void warranty, all of the manufacturers will find any excuse to not cover warranties. A couple hundred over all balanced ont the entire truck won't hurt. 3800lb FGAWR and 3800lb RGAWR is 7600lbs combined. That GVWR is not more than 7100lbs? And being that chunky steel cab and all the added features, are centrally located between the axles. The reserve capacity of the Rear axle won't be equal to the payload listed on the door and the excess you added to the bed. It's so easy to exceed these ratings that why I prefer a 1 ton as a minimum.

    • @wsmcook
      @wsmcook Před rokem

      My tundra rear axle limit plus front axle limit is 8100 #'s, but the GVWR is only 6900 because Toyota uses stupidly high safety margins.
