Geri not only walked back and forth for an entire chess with himself, but went out of his way to create a cocky opponent, a comeback win and a little trickery all to win a bet for his own false teeth. The man knows how to have fun.
Sometimes I think he purposefully lost against himself just so he could trick himself by switching the board around on himself in order to win against himself so that he could get his own dentures back from himself

I just re-watched the Toy Story 2 scene with Woody getting repaired, and when the man (who was fixing woody) opened a few drawers in his tool box, one of the drawers had a bunch of chess pieces in them. That’s when I realised, that it was a reference to Geri’s game. Not to mention that the man who was fixing woody and Geri looked really similar, if not, we’re the same person.

After 20 years of this living in my subconscious.. i finally understand it. I finally get the metaphor. He sets up the game, which represents life. He sits down at the table, ready and confident in his first move. But theres no rivalries, no problems, no one to push against.. so he creates one, to make the game of chess more interesting. And the more into the game he gets, the more you see he questions himself. Also as if he forgets hes playing a game. He begins looking to the rival which piece to turn to next (how we look for validation of our actions in others) He seemingly has a heart attack, when looking for this validation, looking outside himself. The rival checks his pulse, showing how easy it is to forget your playing this game of life against yourself and no one else. And thats when the beauty happens. When you realize once again, it was you creating the game the entire time. You may have forget for a while while playing, but you created the rules, how to win AND the prize (his dentures aka whatever you tell your self youll get for winning/doing right by your means). This is fantastically beautiful and im so happy to understand it after all these years.
Notice how you can't see Geri’s right hand? Well it snuck under the table and around to place the piece. Edit: it also had to somehow twist itself to be the right way
@@litkale6329 you can see his thumb, and a split second after he moves his right hand even though that hand is still there, I believe there is Geri and his twin, who had to go to the bathroom at the beginning but came back, only to be defeated and then leave again, making it look like an illusion, so it is an illusion of an illusion.
Still in love! They should make a remake of Geri's Game. I would love to see Pixars development of animation, lightning, shading and rendering since 1997.
Wow I cannot believe I have never seen this. Very charming short! Few thoughts on some of the inaccuracy of the chess game: -All moves from the start are played legally until 1:53 where Geri shoves the kingside bishop forward to the 3rd row of the board. Later on from 2:05, you can see the kingside bishop is still in the original position f1 due to chromosphere technology (red alert reference). - (Time skipped but i find it funny and want to mention). Black queenside knight from b8 suddenly teleports (or gains two moves) and stomps the white pawn on d4 at 2:18. This can be excused because the show incorporates the time skip element. [Actually, upon closer inspection, which I take it too seriously, the knight was on d7 and decides to hop over like a badass onto d5 but meh!] -2:20 the expression of the characters is far more important than a black bishop who has magically teleported back and stomps on a piece on c3. This effectively puts white kings in check considering white has moved the queen pawn from d2 to d4 in response to the first stomp disaster. But 2 seconds later of the clip, there is nothing being stomped on c3 and white king is not in check :D Magic! [Then we have the lovely time skip where black noms every white pieces] - 2:37 by this white king is in check by the black queen on e3. Pay attention to the black square bishop behind the black queen on d4 as it is also on the same diagonal with the queen checking the white king. - 2:39 Geri's white king cannot go to g2 because the knight is guarding it. Corner square h1 is guarded by the rook. It is unknown what piece is guarding f1 as the Geri playing black says, "Ah-huh", aka [no]. This is later proven incorrect...in an also incorrect sense later on when the board is swapped. -3:20 During the board swap, there's a mysterious d4 black pawn blocking the black square bishop that would have nullfied my argument made in the 2:37 point but it later disappeared. Also black has two black square bishops which is funny XD -By 3:47, it should be white's turn because white's king in check by the queen. After the black queen moves, which unchecks the king but checks the king again from a different angle, this also creates an illegal position of putting the white king in double check, the second checking piece being that black square bishop that was behind the black queen. -3:58 we can see the white king is being illegally checkmated because the king is in double check by the queen and the bishop. Double check can happen in a chess game but one needs to set it up via a discovery attack. It would make perfect sense if the last moving piece is a rook (which wouldn't be checking the white king in the first place) and moves down to e1 to create the double check checkmate. -4:04 when the king is checkmated one does not have to knock the king down, but this is understandable very much so for resigning. Hope this funny chess knowledge/trivia is entertaining for you :D
Continuity error: when he turn the board around, he also knocked the box of the fallen pieces onto the groin but when the camera pans out at 4:30.. the box or the pieces aren’t no where to be found..

But theres no rivalries, no problems, no one to push against.. so he creates one, to make the game of chess more interesting.
And the more into the game he gets, the more you see he questions himself. Also as if he forgets hes playing a game. He begins looking to the rival which piece to turn to next (how we look for validation of our actions in others)
He seemingly has a heart attack, when looking for this validation, looking outside himself.
Thanks for another perspective and deeper meaning of this, shame I can't see most things under the surface
Geri: you can't rush art!
2:24 If that's Geri on the far side, then who's moving the rook?
Wut. Just noticed.
Geri, obiosly
Notice how you can't see Geri’s right hand? Well it snuck under the table and around to place the piece.
Edit: it also had to somehow twist itself to be the right way
This takes place in the toy story universe so the rook is probably sentient and moved on its own.
You know what they say, "Someone's biggest opponent is themselves"
This is such a good film that everyone needs to see
Wow I cannot believe I have never seen this. Very charming short!
Few thoughts on some of the inaccuracy of the chess game:
-All moves from the start are played legally until 1:53 where Geri shoves the kingside bishop forward to the 3rd row of the board.
[Actually, upon closer inspection, which I take it too seriously, the knight was on d7 and decides to hop over like a badass onto d5 but meh!]
-2:20 the expression of the characters is far more important than a black bishop who has magically teleported back and stomps on a piece on c3. This effectively puts white kings in check considering white has moved the queen pawn from d2 to d4 in response to the first stomp disaster. But 2 seconds later of the clip, there is nothing being stomped on c3 and white king is not in check :D Magic!
[Then we have the lovely time skip where black noms every white pieces]
- 2:37 by this white king is in check by the black queen on e3.
Also black has two black square bishops which is funny XD
-By 3:47, it should be white's turn because white's king in check by the queen.
Also at 2:16 he moves a pawn, and then at 2:18 it's right back where it was prior to the move
He wrote an an entire essay!✋😳✋
Actually at 2:05 the Bishop is on e2 for a short time.

Continuity error: when he turn the board around, he also knocked the box of the fallen pieces onto the groin but when the camera pans out at 4:30.. the box or the pieces aren’t no where to be found..
According to Jan Pinkava, the director of the short, when he was asked about this question, the answer is: "We just forgot tò put it in."
I love the music! It sounds just like French music! 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Fun fact, Geri was also seen in toy story two he was the guy who repaired Woody when he ripped his arm.
