Everyone has been asking how I wrote this song so fast. Truth is I wrote this song back in the early 90s. I received a call at the studio and was invited to come to Harah Arena in Dayton, OH to George's show one afternoon by Ron Gaddis of the Jones Boys. Ron and I go way back to my years when I lived in Louisville, KY. He left back stage passes at 'will call' for me and my wife at that time. I got held over at the studio until 4am and didn't get to go to the show. As I laid down to go to sleep, my wife woke and asked if I had went to see George without her. I just replied NO!!! I was aggravated at the fact that we didn't get to go. I simply said, "I'm so busy anymore, the next time I see George, he might be dead." I must have went to sleep with that on my mind because I had a dream of his passing. The dream came to me like 35mm slides. My memory was working overtime sifting through the years. The next morning, I remembered every picture so vividly. It bothered me every day for over a week because I didn't want to write this song. But, finally, I gave in just to get it off my mind. It was finished in about 15 minutes; then my thoughts cleared. It's been on the shelf ever since. It's now been 19 years since that day. I had never heard this song but here I sit listening on the 4th anniversary of the day George Jones died. The line "country music won't ever be the same" sure rings true. So many of us country music lovers are gonna miss that man forever.

The day the possum passed away was a day in the country music world, one of my favorite country singer.
R.I.P. I was at his funeral services and it was very sad to know country music lost one of their best ever. George turned his heart over to the Lord and has went home to Jesus, God Bless you George and watch over your wife Nancy.

That is one beautiful & heartbreaking story all rolled into one! It was sad to see that part of his career that they called him "No Show Jones"! The lawsuits, bankruptcy & divorce, living out of his car would be enough to drive many over the edge. I'm sure glad he was able to overcome all, for the most part. Having an abusive father sure didn't help either! Wish him & Tammy could of worked things out & enjoyed a long happy life together, I guess it just wasn't ment to be. RIP Tammy & George ❤❤

Nice song. I like how you have a tinge of George at the end of your sentences. He created that! He owns that. Anyone who knows country music knows that little nasally errrrr to punctuate a line...is pure George Jones. Very good job on this. I'm sure he would be honored.

the day My heart broke. I got to visit with Nancy and George online when we could. We saw a few shows as their guest here in Minnesota I am forever blessed with the privilege I had knowing them the Jones Boys Brittany Allyn and some of the family.. I was honored and blessed beyond compare here on earth.

It was as if George Jones was a prophet back in the 1980s when he released Who's Going to fill Their Shoes, he surmised the major changes to country music looming just over the horizon. It does not even sound like country music any more.
