Just FYI: 'Kommuna' is the oldest ship of the Russian Navy, it was built in 1915, originally its submarine tender and submarine rescue ship.
I'm pretty sure it is (or was) the oldest active warship in the world.
I'm sorry, but I feel sorry for this ship! If this is the ship, I believe it to be, it is the oldest ship in the Russian fleet. It was built in 1912/13! It was last used in recovering bodies and other technical equipment from the Moskva ship that was sunk. It was built as a submersible recovery ship.

She was more kept as a symbol, kinda like how we have the USS Constitution. But she was still useful as a salvage ship with her modifications. Screw the rest of the russian military, the kommuna was the only thing in it worth saving.

@@Brian-om2hh yeah 95B aid package is quite alot in terms of equipment quantity, but Ukraine will be using this to defend areas still under control, not to advance.

actually crimea was gifted to ukraine in 1959 and in 2014 the crimean government (remember they were still autonomous after being handed to ukraine) had a referendum and the people overwhelmingly voted to leave ukraine just in time before the pre planned civil war, today crimea is still autonomous under the protection of russia which is exactly how it should be unless you don't agree with a democratic vote (remember zelensky was not voted in so double standards much)

@@Brian-om2hh Yup. I remember that conversation when he was asked if Russia had similar plans for Ukraine as for Georgia following the invasion of the latter. He was like naaw, nobody questions the authority of Ukraine over Crimea. And here we are, because that land bridge just looked so juicy he couldn't resist. Of course that wasn't enough for him and he wanted to add a couple more things like Kyiv, the historical capital of Kievan Rus, link up with the Russified Transnistria while grabbing Odessa and thus land-locking Ukraine but all of it failed.
The Kommuna was launched in 1913. In effect, a historic relic! But it's OK to destroy something precious like this ship if it's on the enemy's side of the conflict, I guess.

@@L8ugh1ngm8n1 The kommuna was commissioned in 1915 and has served in the tsars navy, soviet navy and the modern russian navy. That is a career of 109 year this until yesterday made her the oldest naval ship in the world that actually played a practical role.
We will hopefully find out the extent of the damage soon.
It is a little sad but far more tragic things have been lost in this war.

@@hattimounattimou8258 they’ve also been using their airfields and warships to intercept some of the more advanced munitions like Stormshadow or ATACMS. So far they have a 100% interception rate, not even the Israeli’s can boast about that

But... she couldnt. She was built to salvage world war ONE subs. By ww2, subs were too big to salvage. She cant salvage anything anymore - she has a submarine rescue pod to save sailors from sunken subs, and ROV's to inspect things. There was no reason to put her in harm's way. Old lady never even had any guns. Stupid russia, lost another piece of history.

Was this really necessary? This ship was a relic, over a century old, and of little practical military use IMO. Sort of lile shooting a cruise missle at the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor because it's still in commission. Now, I realize that many historical sites in Ukraine have been devaststed by wanton Russian attacks, but still.
When you are at war, you do anything and everything you can to distract your opponent. Russia will now have to expend resources that (they say) could have been better used for their war efforts. How much of Ukraine's history has Russia leveled thus far?
