Mining the Sacred: Indigenous nations fight lithium gold rush at Thacker Pass

  • In Nevada’s remote Thacker Pass, a fight for our future is playing out between local Indigenous tribes and powerful state and corporate entities hellbent on mining the lithium beneath their land. Vancouver-based Lithium Americas is developing a massive lithium mine at Thacker Pass, but for more than two years several local tribes and environmental organizations have tried to block or delay the mine in the courts and through direct action. The Thacker Pass Project is backed by the Biden administration, and companies like General Motors have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the project, looking to capitalize on the transition to a "green energy economy," for which lithium is essential. While it is a vital component in the manufacturing of electric vehicles and batteries, though, there’s nothing “green” about mining lithium. Ending our addiction to fossil fuels is urgently necessary, but the struggle of the local tribes around Thacker Pass reveals the darkside of a “green revolution” that prioritizes profits and consumption over everything (and everyone) else.
    In this feature documentary, “Thacker Pass - Mining the Sacred,” award-winning Cree/Iroquois/French multimedia journalist Brandi Morin and documentary filmmaker Geordie Day report on the Indigenous resisters putting their bodies and freedom on the line to stop the Thacker Pass Project.
    “Thacker Pass - Mining the Sacred” was co-produced by Ricochet Media (‪@ricochet_media‬), IndigiNews (‪@IndigiNewsMedia‬), and The Real News Network (‪@therealnews‬).

      It's not going to be stopped. The environmental movement does not accomplish much at all. We are producing more pollution and environmental harm than ever as our knowledge of and warnings against the danger grow. The simple, sad truth is those who want to mine that land are willing to kill and be killed to do so while those who want to protect humanity are willing to make signs and sing songs. Those who want to mine the land have money and power and those who want to protect it only have common sense. The only mechanism to challenge this dynamic is to dismantle the existing political regimes because you can't stop these harmful projects on site. But they have divided people so bitterly that that seems an impossibility. I feel like all I can do is my part and vote 3rd party and hope that the light bulb illuminates similarly in others.

    When the Secretary of Energy was asked what is going to be used to make electricity, she was obviously trying to figure out what to say instead of gas and blurted out "Coal". Right. Lithium mining uses 60% of the water in their vicinity. Wildlife and fish, from the streams/rivers, are impacted for 250 miles surrounding a mine. And...The tailings when wet become a highly toxic acid that can make its way into groundwater. What happens to farmers and towns, people who make their home there, when they do not have enough water? And those emissions...who are they kidding?

    We have a similar problem here in Massachusetts. Our forests, even state lands, are being stripped for so called renewable wood burning power plants, and solar arrays are being built on our woods and farmlands. Near the Palmer schools is a big ol wooded hill called, Mt. Dumplin, surrounded by woods. I saw in horror that a huge solar array was being built on that hill. The elementary school and high school are right next to that woods. Why can't that array go over the acres and acres of parking lots there. It would be a win-win. The cars would be shaded. The black asphalt wouldn't absorb all that heat. The parking lot array could heat and light the school. But no. It's cheaper and easier to build it on the hill. Damn them!!!!!

    "Nevada has a strong anti-SLAPP law. SLAPP stands for strategic lawsuits against public participation." this is from a reporter's org. This is your solution! This is your legal avenue to counter-sue Lithium America. IT's really that simple. Also counter-sue under RLUIPA - religious access act by Congress.

  • @DC-wg1cr
    @DC-wg1cr Před 11 měsíci +13

    People don't realize that anytime over the table business is done in rural areas, "innovative" capitalists also bring black market activities. Elements of middle and upper management will coordinate these trafficking rings and the low level workers will be the fall guys. Thats how these networks are set up and continue to grow throughout the rural west.

  • @sasachiminesh1204
    @sasachiminesh1204 Před 11 měsíci +10

    They should counter-sue under RLUIPA - which guarantees access to religious sites under this federal act. It's also intended for incarcerated persons, but it can apply to anyone. Counter-sue - and also counter-sue based on your treaty rights. Also, see if Nevada has an anti-SLAPP law - because that would penalize the company for filing a suit intended to smother public participation and freedom of expression. THis is a classic SLAPP suit situation.

    The reason some interest groups would want to use a resource like Lithium is no doubt for something like electric car batteries, but the reason this (and other situations like it) will probably continue is because modern global civilization has many uses for many resources such as Lithium, cobalt, etc.
    I think the forces of industry fueled by capitalism (money) is most likely the issue in these kinds of stories..

    Great story, but at least 20% of your audience will drop off as soon as you say "so called" referring to the state. Even if they agree with what you're trying to communicate, it's clumsy moral grandstanding. This story is too important to limit your audience like that. Not all of us are in your bubble.

    Mining in developed countries is orders better than the alternative in terms of reclamation etc. Where else is better than remote arid public BLM land in Nevada? There's lots of water for crops right next to the site!

    Evolution or extinction? Are we able to learn to live in harmony with each other, nature and technology including AI? Sustainability not profitability. Mindfulness and self love, respect not exploitation. Our species faces a major die off, the population is passing the peak, passing a tipping point where our population goes from exponential growth to a transition to a new sustainable relationship with the ecosystem that has sustained us up until now. That downward curve can be as steep as a cliff which falls to zero, extinction, or it can begin steeply and recover as it returns to historic levels of sustainability, pre-technology levels such as pre-Columbian America. This could lead to a selection pressure that would produce a new species of hominid, speciation. The curve could be more gentle and could include technological solutions that would level off at a population that could both live more harmoniously with nature and each other and incorporate technology that would represent an evolution into a new species of technologically enhanced humanity, cyborgs. Taking life to other planets, terraforming and evolving new species of humans who could survive other planetary ecologies is another path that will require technologies including genetic engineering to reach for the stars. Managing these changes in a moral and humane way brings hope to a future that appears very scary from our selfish and ethnocentric perspectives. Keep up the good work or as John Perkins says "Dream True" instead of living like the hero of his book "Confessions of an Economic Hitman." Be blessed, you are a blessing. Aboriginal cultures have much to teach us.

      @@SlaVniK77 i remember in science class when we made a light bulb light up using a "potato battery" made out of potatoes/pennies/zinc coated nails/copper wire as the sole energy source!! like you do not plug anything into a wall outlet and the light bulb lights up from basically the potatoes and metal reacting to each other!!...i read if you boil the potatoes you can get more power...i always thought this would be a good thing to know/understand if there was an "apocalypse"...but surely there has to be a better way to generate power that doesn't ALSO destroy the earth/sacred lands/factually currently our ONLY home!!...you know how much whining/crying/protesting there would be if some other ethnic group tried to steal all the grave yards/battle lands here in the rest of the usa...they find some "resource" under the land where the battle of gettysburg happened/some "mad" scientist discovers how to use human bones to generate power?! and surely there'd be a gazillion old men out there strapped saying "over my dead body"!!...this entire situation is so shameful/disgusting!! to think human beings would treat other humans like this!!??
      the cause of this is due to the fact that we NEVER even discuss anything else other than "single ruler/single priority" systems...currently if you asked a million usa citizens "what is our main system" the majority answer would be "capitalism" then some would say "democracy" and probably a few would say something else/unknown...for me when i think about what these systems are or what they do, i come up with....'money rules/money is the top or only priority" the words 'capital' and 'money' are synonyms meaning we can/should use them interchangeably SO capitalism=moneyism! what do we all think is going to be prioritized/or rule over EVERYTHING(that's not another word for money) else under a system that has money as its NAME? so if humans were "systematically" more important than money then we'd not call our system MONEYism we'd call it "humanism" or "peopleism".
      democracy simply means "majority rules" but what is the majority? there IS more money on earth than humans so....whether you think we have "moneyism" or "democracy" this boils down to "money rules"!! this is what we are all "agreeing" to have as our system reguardless if this is our personal value and even if we don't understand it!! once you realize we have done this to ourselves by advocating for moneyism/democracy or by not understanding just going along with the crowd or by not protesting it, the way the world functions/dysfunctions becomes perfectly understandable, like no wonder our government seems corrupt and like it can't function the way we need it to because government isn't the ultimate ruler, money and government are NOT synonyms, we don't have "governmentism" we have moneyism so money is systematically more important than government and money controls/rules over government, ahh yes government should be corrupt/not function when money actually rules over/above it!!...we should all be shocked we don't have 8 billion billionaires, except the billionaires we currently have are THE MOST ruled over/manipulated by/slavishly controlled by money aren't they!! the rest of us who are not billionaires, we obviously do NOT "agree" money is more important then ALL humans including ourselves!! we do NOT actually "agree" personally that money is THE most important thing! since we have moneyism and NOT environmentalism this means we are also making money more important than the earth too!!?? sorry i just can't help but point out, how unintelligent of us humans huh!? too bad money didn't have a brain maybe it would realize if the earth gets destroyed or becomes uninhabitable then money will no longer exist/wont be ruler anymore!!??
      the solution needs to be that we stop wanting/advocating/trying to implement all/any 'single ruler/single priority" systems ie anarchism(no rules) socialism(what's "social"? humans so "human's rule") democracy(majority rules/still just a 'single' ruler), libertarianism(freedom rules) fascism(one human/king/dictator rules) capitalism(money rules) environmentalism(earth rules) etc...we need to create/invent/test or try/implement/a system with "multiple rulers/multiple priorities" a system where "the earth/ALL life on earth/safety/knowledge/spirituality/hobbies/vacations/purpose/??/etc/etc ALL rule or are ALL our top priorities" we can add and subtract as needed from this list of multiple rulers. we all do this, multitask and have multiple priorities, in our personal lives EVERYDAY already!!?? why are we not doing this collectively??!! like we don't even discuss any systems that have multiple rulers/multiple priorities!!?? i can't even name a system because as far as i can tell humans have never invented/talked about any??!!(maybe peter joseph, he at least accurately describes what our current systems do/don't do except he has/uses "expert" language). i think most of us think(incorrectly) that this is already happening(that we all do collectively prioritize multiple things) but when you start to really look into the entire phenomenon we DEFINITELY are NOT???!!!
      I"m not sure if we will ever invent a "perfect" system but we CAN and SHOULD do a TON better than what we currently are!! just like it would not be "best" if we had "earthism" where we made the earth ruler/more important than ALL else because then we'd be making the earth more important than us and that's obviously not going to be "best"!! just like it wouldn't be "best" if we had "humanism" and we tried to make ourselves more important than the earth/all other life on earth/etc...i'm confused is there some "rulebook" or law stating "humans are ONLY ALLOWED to have one single priority/one ruler at a time"?? why do we not collectively prioritize multiple things at the same time like 100 years ago??!!

      Lithium for batteries is completely useless compared to oil extraction which is much less intrusive and so much more efficient in terms of vehicle range and capability.
