Dear Gertie, hello Love, I am most likely your oldest student. I am 98 yrs old and I still sew. But I love the tailored skirt of the 1950's. You know the skirts that are under the knee and it abit slender. But I have forgotten how to put a nice zipper in my skirt. I used to do it like the manufacturer did it. Is there anyway you can do a educational video on putting a zipper in a tailored skirt please. I love your vintage cloths, I wore them. When I was in high school it was the late 1930s to the early 1940s. I believe I was born In 1922. My favorite decade for cloth was the 1940s. I hated the 1960s. And the 90s cloth I hated that decade too. But I really loved the 1980's. I love the colors. And that decade took alot from the 1940s. Well please reteach me how to put a zipper in a tailored skirt like the manufacturer. Thank you Dear for your work. You are helping our youngsters to keep in touch with our past. Sewing is and knowing how to sew is a Blessing. God Bless you. 👵 🙏 PS Gertie your sound on your videos are very low, is there anyway we older sewers can hear you better? Thank you. My visiting nurse Kelley says it's low too. Thank you so much. 👵
Hello AnnMargaret, I'm still sewing at 72! Glad to know I can keep it up for years! Per the volume, I find it helps me personally to wear earbuds with the volume up high. ( It gives you a warning about listening to high volumes, but I'm already hard of hearing, and wear a hearing aid in my left ear! So I thought I would mention it because it might help you. I do not use the wireless expensive kind, I get cheap ones, and keep several pair. Hope that helps!
Oh Gertie, I love this “sew along with me” series. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Please make more videos like this. Love from Australia

I'm a sewing beginner trying to learn; just watched 4 skirt tutorials and yours was by far the easiest to follow (despite the slightly more complicated closure methods). Thank you for the thorough walk through and the free pattern!
Gertie does the best tutorials and has the freshest patterns.
Hi there I'm on a UK sewing group and one of the Ladies showed her coat and it's amazing so here I found myself 😂 my usual make is Victorian era style of outfits and headwear 💜🌹💜
You know, I've been making this style of skirt for years, and I STILL learned something. (It was the zipper technique, AND THE WAISTBAND underlap.)
Thank you!
Great video. I'm a sewing specialist for WDWCC and have built some well-known characters. I find sewing in the zipper on a project like this is easier to sew in when the side seams haven't been sewn first. The additional weight makes the application awkward, but not impossible as you can see.
I already have the Stanwyck skirt pattern but I came for the instruction vid lol- your sew-along videos are SO easy to follow, Gertie!
Hi Gertie, I’m an old seamstress who for years made clothes for antique dolls. Just back to sewing to refresh the 50-60’s style of sewing that I was taught. Some methods learned have been forgotten. Looking forward to you.
Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. I love skirts like this!
Thanks for the pattern and sew-along! The denim with the multi colour speckles are to die for! 😍🤩
Love it. Want th
fabric!! Love everything.
So amazing! Love this fabric too. Is it the same as your Loretta Shorts found exclusively on Patreon? If ya’ll haven’t joined, what are you waiting for?! 😍
Haha you’re so cute! Yes it’s the same fabric, I need a whole wardrobe in this denim! ❤️
@@GertiesWorld love it so much! Need to get my hands on some yardage! ❤️

You're an amazing teacher Gertie. So thorough. ❤❤❤
You absolutely have to go see the movie West Side Story. The women’s dresses we’re out of this world gorgeous!
Omgosh I just found your channel and love your work. I'm a newbie and absolutely love your step by step tutorials Please keep putting them out.❤️
Omg this is the video I need these days! 😍 Thank you!
I love the fact that it has pockets... We all Carry our cell phones and I don't like using my bra to hold it in, I need pockets 😊
So exciting. I always love a new video.
Thank you Gertie,
Very clear and precise instructions. Great tutorial! 👍
Love all your videos Gertie!
Oh I love your dress! I have about 6 meters of this in my sewing room. It's beautiful 😍 I need to use it and make a dress like yours 👍😁
I love your program. Thank you
For a more finished look, you could under stitch the pockets before sewing front/back together.
I like to do that. But lately I've been loving french seamed pockets. I found a good tutorial for it and it's tricky to understand but worth it
You can totally do that! If you're going to understitch, then you'll probably want to take an additional step of pressing the pockets back in toward the skirt to create a sharp crease before sewing the side seams. The way I do it creates more of a soft fold at the pocket, which I personally like.
Thanks for the pattern 🙂
Beautiful 😍
Veru nice , I like these models
I am watching you on PBS updating your circle skirt while I am watching you teach your pattern here. I am taking it as a sign.
I am making a circle skirt!
thannnk youuuu i've learned a lot from youuu
So so so excited! Also so need that stripe shirt.
Aw thanks! That's the Charm Patterns Hepburn Top!
@@GertiesWorld I have it cut out I just haven't put it to fabric yet. I love all the variations. Thanks always for all your hard work and for always keeping us positive, motivated, and excited to sew!
I wish this tutorial showed how the fabric was folded for cut out. Great tutorial though.
سلام عليكم أنا متتبعة جديدة من الجزائر 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
Is this a part 2? After the intro, it just started wirh the skirt half done.
Yay is this the second day of your 13 days spooktacular October!
Yes! This is the skirt I was wearing in the Haunted Mansion look!
Yo, I'm putting pockets into everything from now on!
I love the skirt!! Would this skirt be long enough to have a petticoat underneath?
You are just awesome!!! This is exactly what I ned, step by step, I am clever but I am to fluent in sewing and you do it with such a perfection- it looks pretty even on the inside!!! I made the button down skirt last night, I made it too wide, I will adjust it but wow its so on the money!!!:))))))
will things go wrong if I don't use stay tape for the zipper?
This helps me feel hopeful bc I have to find a tomato print swing skirt for a performance and..it does not exist! Go figure I'd finally learn to sew to make a perfect performance outfit..lol
Any suggestions on taking in this skirt it a bit? I just finished the skirt but it’s a little loose on the waistline. Thanks!
Does the fabric type matter? Could you use denim mid Weight?
Thank you, Gertie. If I wanted a wider waist band, could it be done on this skirt pattern?
Sure! Just widen the waistband piece to the width you desire.
I’m new to sewing and I’m wondering how to do the stitch around the skirt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sew many sizes!!!!
I am curious about what the differences are between this and the Stanwyck when it comes to the fit and style. I know the Stanwyck was totally different pockets and is gored whereas this looks like its a half and two quarters of a circle stirched together.
They’re both a full circle with 1 inch of ease in the waist but they have different style lines and design options. Stanwyck has gores, two styles of oversized patch pockets, three waistband styles, a bib option, strap option, and the ruffle option. This one is a very simple full circle skirt with side seam pockets and a 1” tall waistband.
If I don't have a dress form is it OK to just hang the skirt on a hanger to let it drop? Also I find that the metal hooks and bars tend to cut through the thread and they fall off. Suggestions please?
Yes, you can hang it on a hanger! Then it's best to try it on and mark the hem (great if you can have someone help you with this!). As for the hooks and bars, what kind of thread are you using? I definitely recommend poly all-purpose and if you're still having the issue, maybe choose a heavier weight thread?
Hi, I'm new to sewing and just joined your patreon. When pressing the seam allowance for the zipper, why did you fold one over 1/2 an inch and the other 5/8? They seem close to each other, why not 1/2 for both?
So nice! Thanks for this extra pattern!
Is the top the Barbie one? Or which one is it? 😍😍😍😍
It looks like the top that goes with the picnic skirt 😍
Yep, it's the Picnic Top, which is available on Patreon!
Dear Gertie, I am making your free double circle skirt pattern but I am stuck. I do not see any notches to be cut out on the waistband are at the top of the skirt pattern. Please help 911.
Hmm, I can't find the pattern or instructions. I see yesterday's blog post!
Here you go! charmpatterns.com/shop/charm-circle-skirt/
I love the striped top you are wearing in the video. is it one of your patterns? I also note in another comment you say you have done a pattern for an underpetticote for this type of skirt, (I think with butterick) do you have links to this pattern on your website, or are you planning to do one at some point?
Yes the top is a charm pattern, the Hepburn top. charmpatterns.com/shop/hepburn-top/ The petticoat was originally a Butterick pattern but is now owned by Simplicity. It's for sale on their website. www.joann.com/simplicity-pattern-s9293-misses-sleepwear-size-e5-14-22/18339416.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwspKUBhCvARIsAB2IYusFrb-TZrXXtGtr4qXPujK0Chc78qZTGf8LXjj9FJmOoEhuiffrQ-EaAvz9EALw_wcB
Hey Gertie. Wanted you to know the link on the Morticia Gown sends us here!
Hi Getie, I have a question If your fabric has characters or designs when making a circle skirt the back will be upside down. How can you fix this.?
The work around would be to separate the skirt pattern into panels (with seam allowance added) so that each panel can be cut with the design facing up. If you don't feel like doing that yourself, our stanwyck skirt pattern is drafted this way. charmpatterns.com/shop/stanwyck-skirt/
Do I need a server and a regular sewing machine?
Have you uploaded the pattern for your ruffled petticoat?
Sorry, which petticoat do you mean? I do have a petticoat pattern with Butterick/Simplicity.
Hi Gertie. What weight is the fabric. I have to buy online and never have worn denim, so no clue about thickness and weight.
This denim is around 12 ounces which is on the heavy side, so you could definitely go lighter. Circle skirts can be made in many different fabrics and weights, it all depends on the outcome you're going for!
@@GertiesWorld thanks. I make lots of circle skirts, but have never used denim. I will go for a lighter weight. Would chambray be a good alternative?
So i can print this but im a little scared to because ita gonna print on normal sized printing paper and i feel like thats gonna make the pattern not the right size lol
We have two print formats. If you're printing on letter sized paper you'll want to use the "Tiled format." This will print the pattern out in chunks that will need to be assembled to get the correct sized piece.
@@GertiesWorld OMG Thank you so much lol
Hoi Gertie mein schinttmuster ist zu klein wo ich ausgedruckt hab für diesen tellerrock. Liebe grüße aus der 🇨🇭 silvia
