    Dear Gertie, hello Love, I am most likely your oldest student. I am 98 yrs old and I still sew. But I love the tailored skirt of the 1950's. You know the skirts that are under the knee and it abit slender. But I have forgotten how to put a nice zipper in my skirt. I used to do it like the manufacturer did it. Is there anyway you can do a educational video on putting a zipper in a tailored skirt please. I love your vintage cloths, I wore them. When I was in high school it was the late 1930s to the early 1940s. I believe I was born In 1922. My favorite decade for cloth was the 1940s. I hated the 1960s. And the 90s cloth I hated that decade too. But I really loved the 1980's. I love the colors. And that decade took alot from the 1940s. Well please reteach me how to put a zipper in a tailored skirt like the manufacturer. Thank you Dear for your work. You are helping our youngsters to keep in touch with our past. Sewing is and knowing how to sew is a Blessing. God Bless you. 👵 🙏 PS Gertie your sound on your videos are very low, is there anyway we older sewers can hear you better? Thank you. My visiting nurse Kelley says it's low too. Thank you so much. 👵

      Hello AnnMargaret, I'm still sewing at 72! Glad to know I can keep it up for years! Per the volume, I find it helps me personally to wear earbuds with the volume up high. ( It gives you a warning about listening to high volumes, but I'm already hard of hearing, and wear a hearing aid in my left ear! So I thought I would mention it because it might help you. I do not use the wireless expensive kind, I get cheap ones, and keep several pair. Hope that helps!

    Great video. I'm a sewing specialist for WDWCC and have built some well-known characters. I find sewing in the zipper on a project like this is easier to sew in when the side seams haven't been sewn first. The additional weight makes the application awkward, but not impossible as you can see.

    • @GertiesWorld
      @GertiesWorld  Před 2 lety +3

      You can totally do that! If you're going to understitch, then you'll probably want to take an additional step of pressing the pockets back in toward the skirt to create a sharp crease before sewing the side seams. The way I do it creates more of a soft fold at the pocket, which I personally like.

    I am curious about what the differences are between this and the Stanwyck when it comes to the fit and style. I know the Stanwyck was totally different pockets and is gored whereas this looks like its a half and two quarters of a circle stirched together.

    • @GertiesWorld
      @GertiesWorld  Před 2 lety +2

      They’re both a full circle with 1 inch of ease in the waist but they have different style lines and design options. Stanwyck has gores, two styles of oversized patch pockets, three waistband styles, a bib option, strap option, and the ruffle option. This one is a very simple full circle skirt with side seam pockets and a 1” tall waistband.

  • @JenInOz

    If I don't have a dress form is it OK to just hang the skirt on a hanger to let it drop? Also I find that the metal hooks and bars tend to cut through the thread and they fall off. Suggestions please?

    • @GertiesWorld
      @GertiesWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, you can hang it on a hanger! Then it's best to try it on and mark the hem (great if you can have someone help you with this!). As for the hooks and bars, what kind of thread are you using? I definitely recommend poly all-purpose and if you're still having the issue, maybe choose a heavier weight thread?

    • @GertiesWorld
      @GertiesWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      The work around would be to separate the skirt pattern into panels (with seam allowance added) so that each panel can be cut with the design facing up. If you don't feel like doing that yourself, our stanwyck skirt pattern is drafted this way. charmpatterns.com/shop/stanwyck-skirt/
