  • Gandalf and Pippin have ridden to Gondor and can now see the beacons of Gondor (large fires lit at intervals across the land signaling Gondor's need for help from its allies) are lit. The two travelers enter the walls of the city of Minas Tirith and go to see Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, to give him news-including news of his son Boromir's death. Because the stewards only govern the kingdom in the king's absence, Gandalf warns Pippin to keep news of Aragorn quiet for now, because Denethor might not appreciate being told he may lose power.
Gandalf and Pippin enter the throne room where Denethor is seated-not on the throne, but on a chair near it. He is in a bad mood because he has already received news of Boromir's death. He questions Pippin about Boromir's death, and Pippin, in return for Boromir's sacrifice on his behalf, swears loyalty to Denethor. After talking with Denethor, Pippin goes off to acquaint himself with the city, and Gandalf leaves to take care of other business.
Pippin meets another soldier of Gondor, Beregond, who helps him find his way. Everywhere Pippin looks, preparations are being made for war. When Beregond must attend to other matters, he sends his son Bergil to take over as Pippin's guide. That night, Pippin is asleep when Gandalf finally returns.

    Background tracks sometimes overpower narrator.

I listen to this when I go to bed and find the background too disruptive. I wish there was a version with just the voice

It’s to hide the shortcomings of the narrator sorry but it’s true

@corydontodd no it's not. Narrator is legendary, you're no one. Most likely an editing goof

I love Tolkien's version where each character has its proper place in the proper plot (Beregond is one such character).
Imo, you don't change something which is already perfect. 💖

Yes. Although you have to give filmmakers grace cause they're trying to fit three books into only three films.
Beregond, Hama, Glorfindel, Bombadil, Haldir. . . . Tolkein always has the power to reel you into a friendship with these side characters in only a short time. You get fond of them and even though the filmmakers try to honor some of them with a few short moments on-screen, of course it never compares to the "time you spend with them" reading the book.

@@ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim Jackson removed/replaced most of those characters except Hama. Sending Haldir and some elves to Helm's Deep and having Haldir killed, is just sick! Nothing like that happened in the book. That was just one of Jackson's sick ideas of getting more drama.
Why replace Glorfindel with Arwen and why give her so much time in the movies? She's barely in the books at all. He added Brego the horse and pretended to "kill" Aragorn so Brego could "save" him.
Jackson removed everything that's important and that explains why certain things happened (like Merry's blade) and he added so much drama/crap (that never existed in the books) just to make the movies more Hollywood friendly. I could go on and on about all the changes Jackson did, but he's not worth any more of my time.
I give credit wherever it's deserved, but when it comes to Jackson's butchered versions of Tolkien's books, I 100% agree with Christopher Tolkien. End of discussion.
