  • In this video we are going to replace some broken parts of the 1.2S engine of this Opel Kadett C.
    I figured out something was wrong because it was smoking pretty terrible.

    there is a few extra HP hidden in the cylinderhead.. its in the intake ports where 1 channel splits into 2 channels.. if you can grind that area bigger, you will get more HP for small money..

    • @JelleStappers
      @JelleStappers  Před 7 měsíci

      That's a fun fact 😁. But im not gonna do that, this car isn't for the HP. Just for fun, if i wanted more hp i would put a 2L in it as that fits just aswell.
      Thanks for telling to everybody who reads the comments 😃.

    I need a pit like that to work on my cars from underneath. This reminds me, I have to finish assembling my spare Model A engine.
    It is amazing how similar that engine is to my 1930 Model A engine. The only real difference is the way the valves are done. The piston design hasn't changed much. The bottom is almost identical with the same type of gaskets and Babbitt bearings.

    • @JelleStappers
      @JelleStappers  Před rokem

      Then a mini excavator restoration to dig the pit would be a fun project to do on beforehand 😉.
      The engine design indeed is a very classical one of this one. Funniest is that these were used until the early 2000.

    I had an Opel Kadett many years ago and still love them, I asked an opel /vauxhall magzine (no internet then) how to upgrade the 1200 opel enigne, the reply was not favourable, the suggestion was to put in a five journal vauxhall or opel engine, as you know the 1200 only has three, journals, big ends, crankshaft bearings, surely there is an abbility to up grade the 12 to 12s and therefore upgrade the 12s slightly, I'm only looking an increase of 10/20 horse power...

    • @JelleStappers
      @JelleStappers  Před rokem

      The 1200 engine is a nice engine, accelerates nice and quite rapid according to the footpedal if the engine is tuned correctly for a small engine. I stayed with the 1200 as it gives plenty of power for such a lightweight car. This is a 1200S, only the carburator isn't.

    • @maximilianeissner4759
      @maximilianeissner4759 Před rokem +1

      There can be plenty of power gained from the 1.2 OHV. It is a rev-happy engine even though it has pushrods, and if you want high revs you need to balance the engine parts like the flywheel and crankshaft. With upgraded camshaft (304deg one is pretty good for tuned street use), a bigger carburetor (weber dcoe/idf, solex), bigger valves and a ported head (even though cast iron is a pain to port), and even shave the head to improve compression. If you add to that a proper exhaust system and tubular headers you can get very far. You can easily achieve 75-90 horsepower and it'll still be reliable. For huge tuning it is not reliable because of the three main bearings, as you said.
      Many people put 2.0 liter Opel engines in them. Personally I like to keep the small engine as the car is so lightweight, all you need is a proper suspension setup and nice tires in order to make it a road legal go-kart.

    • @JelleStappers
      @JelleStappers  Před rokem +1

      @@maximilianeissner4759 lightweight is indeed the thing to go for with this car, the horsepower doesn't matter too much. Even with its 60hp now it accelerates nice cause the whole car only weights 700 kg. I wouldnt put any money into tuning a engine for street use😅.

    I still have a few Kadette "C" parts if you want them for free/gratis, the only thing is I live in Belfast , Northern Ireland, so if you know anyone over here, that can pick them up??? I have a full interior in a horrible beige/brown colour, front and rear seats and front door cards (I can send pics if you are interested, they came out of a Kadette C coupe, so may fit a two door Kadette saloon as well) an untested brake servo, and master brake cylinder (I think) it was working when removed from the car, but though they were stored in a dry garage for many years, they would probaly need all the seals checked or replaced, I know these parts are hard to find in the UK, and getting more rare in Europe/Germany, other bits and bobs/parts that I want to go to a good home/the home of Kadettes and BE USED, bits of trim, etc,etc, parts that I would want money for are a set of Bilstein Shock absorbers, front and rear, non-adjustable circa 1979 and a set of 5 replica minilite alloy wheels that have Opel and BMW stamped on the inside, they are 4 stud, so they fit Kadette Cs, don't know which BMW they would fit, pics to follow, hopefully..

    When I had a kadett I gave the engine to a guy to rebuild who knoew nothing about Kadetts he was a Ford man, Escorts and Capris mainly, a) I should not have done that, b) I never knew there were cut outs in the pistons for the valves, having not taken the engine apart my self c) I severely hate myself for trusting all the idiots in Northern Ireland who clearly knew NOTHING about Opel Kadetts!!!!! Man I love this video, of to bed now, hopefuly you will contact me again, I'd love to Whatsapp with you and watch you do your stuff, I have unlimited texts, calls and data to Germany, but evidently whatsapp is the best from your perspective, Brendan, my friend, the aero nautical engineer, is in USA at the moment, but the minute he gets back I will confirm his location and then we can talk more, even if you don't want the parts I have, I'm sure you know some one who would!!!!

    i heard from my mechanic friend that these engines, including mine has a problem with all the manual gearbox models that when you press the clutch you force the crankshaft inwards, and it wears it, my 1.2 engine has about 3-4mm play when i push-pull the crankshaft from the belt side, did you notice the same on yours? if yes should we worry about it?

    • @JelleStappers
      @JelleStappers  Před rokem +1

      That isnt familiar to mine. And this one didnt. If they did these engines wouldnt be used for so many years. Maybe it was a specific build year with this issue? The clutch also is completely independant.
