    Since we installed an EMPI premium disc brake on the front of our Super Beetle, we didn’t want the rear to feel neglected so we decided to install a corresponding premium disc brake kit on the rear. We also install stainless steel braided brake hoses for a complete performance braking system. We also go over a common issue that can come up when installing a rear disc brake kit, so watch and learn!

    Fun stuff. I had forgotten just how much stuff I've replaced on my daughter's Beetle until watching these videos.

    Spacers not included in the kit for IRS. ...Very frustrating! In the description for the spacer (22-5281-7) states "This Spacer Is Required For Disc Brake Rotors In Rear With IRS Transmission". SO why not include them in the "Kit"?!!?

    • @Sam_Mebane
      @Sam_Mebane Před 25 dny

      The kits that require them include them. If they weren’t and you do need them, give the order desk a call and they can get them sent out to you.

    I found in my rear kit their was an adaper the screws into the caliper it looks to be a 1.0 mm pitch because the the metric line fitting are 1.5 mm pitch and will not thread directly into the caliper. Also a tip on brake line you can use 10mm fitting into a english 3/8 thread but 3/8 will not thread into a 10 mm threaded area.
    Not sure why the rear caliper is a different pitch unless they use thease calipers for other applications the bottom is the bubble flair but the adapter coupling that was supplyed with my kit is kind of flat I suppose that small area of pressure on the concaved area is what makes the adapter seal.
    Also to i bought a new brake line kit for my 74 super beetle and fould some line to be short because they are intentend for shorter route to the wheel cylinder on a drum brake system. 1 more thing my kit came with a small flex line about 3 inchs or 75 mm long that goes into the adapter at caliper it supposely allows for the caliper to float when the brakes are applied great video thank you for your time

      @Sam_Mebane Před 4 lety +1

      Depending on the kit, yes. Some calipers are sourced from other cars and adapted to the VW application.

    I bought the conversion kit (F and R) for my '72 Super. Can I get the SS braided lines from JBugs as well? And, are they measured out already as standard length for this conversion?

    • @JBugsVWParts
      @JBugsVWParts  Před 5 lety

      We used: www.jbugs.com/product/5588.html & www.jbugs.com/product/98-6714-B.html to replace the stock rubber hoses. The replacement hoses are stock replacement lengths.

  • @Paulman50
    @Paulman50 Před 5 lety +2

    I already changed the single brake master cylinder to a duel system. Is that sufficient to run the disk upgrade.

    • @JBugsVWParts
      @JBugsVWParts  Před 5 lety +1

      If you are running front disc brakes only, yes. If you’re running 4 wheel disc brakes, then no, a large bore master cylinder is required.

    I bought my rear brake kit long ago from another vendor and the emergency brake cables were wat too long for my car, a 1970 Beetle. For what year car are the longer cables for?

    • @JBugsVWParts
      @JBugsVWParts  Před 5 lety +1

      In the kits we offer, the longer cables are for IRS cars (1968 with Autostick& 1969 and later). Shorter cables are for Swing Axle cars (1968 and earlier)

    I have a question what kind of masses can I put to my vw to make it 5 lug nuts?

    • @Sam_Mebane
      @Sam_Mebane Před 4 lety

      That depends on the year, model of your car and what 5 lug pattern you are referring to. JBugs offers disc brake kits in various lug patterns and most models can swap to wide 5 lug VW, or the 5 lug Porsche pattern with a bolt on kit.

    If you only have rear brakes in a dunebuggy application plumbed through turning brakes, what master cylinder would you use for a disc brake conversion? Thanks in advance.

    • @Sam_Mebane
      @Sam_Mebane Před 2 lety +1

      We most commonly use an early Bus master cylinder and then plug off the ports that aren't used. www.jbugs.com/product/6112.html

      @ReneValdivia-tz2yo Před 10 měsíci

    Are you supposed to torque the wheel studs when threading into the rotor?

    • @Sam_Mebane
      @Sam_Mebane Před 3 lety +1

      We do not torque the studs, no. We use thread locker on the threads and snug them up.

    would replacing the master be required on a kombi van also

    • @Sam_Mebane
      @Sam_Mebane Před 4 lety +1

      That depends on the disc brake conversion kit. If a kit does require a master cylinder it will typically come with it or the instructions will reference which kit to use.

      I bought mine here: vwparts.aircooled.net/Flywheel-and-Brake-Drum-Torque-Tool-Kit-36mm-p/torque-tool.htm. Definitely worth it. Also, you’ll need to brace the drum. I used an extra jack stand to “catch” a stud/lug nut. When you start to turn, the whole drum will want to turn.
