Drive shaft vibration would be a likely cause. On some built I'll extend input shafts and run a pillow block bearing for adding support. very important on racing mower builds I've found.
When you spun the Drive shaft by hand and it was moving up and down , I thought to myself that it was going to Blow out the Transaxle bearing quickly LOL!
Hey don't say much but we should do is use a carrier bearing by the transmission to help support the shaft you got a good set up but just needs a little bit of work there

Is a 203 too big for those? The live axle and gearbox idea though could turn out really nice though, might make driving the front wheels simple also if you decided. But then my crazy brain always take the "inexpensive" and/or "simple"part out of everything haha.

But it wasn't the bearing, the entire input shaft decided to say "see ya later" to the case.
Well at least the transaxle isn't making any weird noises anymore lol!

I think you should put a stabilizer bering in the back so that the driveshaft doesn't snap the transmission case
