I find, for me, the best way to cross fast water is with your back to the current and side step. It's pretty stable, and if the current takes your legs out from under you, you just sit down and pop back up.

  • @AJHillis

If looking at FS, I'd skew towards newer XC bikes in the search for the simple reason that they're more likely to fit 2 bottles in the front triangle. Most MTBs don't do that, and for the big loops you like to do (and we like to watch), that carrying capacity is a big factor.
But another thing you could try is flat bars on the Bombtrack. I find that the position on my gravel bike is the thing that really holds me back on rougher terrain. I have a rigid Jones MTB as well, and the flat bar allows me to be further back to make steep/technical descents much safer.

I commend you for going down Pumice Mt. on a drop bar bike. ALSO you didn't quite do the loop right, and it is easy to miss if you haven't done the loop with someone in the know, but instead of the water crossing at the end where the bridge is washed out their is a trail maybe a quarter mile before the water crossing and it is very easy to miss but it goes right up Ape Canyon to the Lahar parking area and it is a much nicer climb compared to the gravel road you take after crossing the raging creek by the broken bridge. ALSO give a shout out to the NWTA volunteers that keep that epic ride, rideable.

It was mentioned the other week but take a look at IBIS, Lightspeed & Lynskey xc bikes are worth a look. Try to aim for something can do 2.6 in either 27.5 or 29 format. Look for a HTA of around be around 68.5* when adjusted for sag(usually hta are listed as not adjusted for sag), cause a sus fork technically can make the bike slacker, but once the fork is sagging(rider weight & such) & compressing(when riding) it could make the bike less slack or the same as the rigid fork option. I been reading up about geo as I am thinking about putting a sus fork on my Bombtrack Beyond+. Side note looking at the geo of the Bombtrack Hook EXT-C & Hook ADV(the one that comes from factory with an MRP Fork) they both have similar trail so handling shouldn't be that much different. Good luck!
