The Catholic church got this banned on a number of radio stations, which just increased the popularity of it. The archbishop in St Louis asked him not to play it at a concert there, so Billy being the ultimate smart aleck played it twice and asked the church to ban his next album to help increase sales of that too. He actually had a crush on a catholic girl named Virginia in his teens, so its a bit biographical.

This was the theme song for the girls on the fourth floor of Camden Hall first year of university at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish Nova Scotia. It was a residence in a convent. My room was right next to Sister Isobelle. No men allowed past the ground floor lobby Cleanest dorm I had ever seen...you could eat off the floors. Memories

Totally a line, but it didn’t work on Virginia. He didn’t end up with her, but he did end up with a great song, so it still worked out. After all, he got us to bop along to his failed attempt at persuasion. 😄
This song came out the summer I was 14 and I loved it!! I called the radio station many times a day to ask for this song!! I would dance around my room and sing at the top of my lungs!!! So fun!!

In retrospect, Billy Joel himself admits that there’s a selfish mindset to this song, and even he has to wag his finger at his high school self he’s channeling in the POV of the lyrics.
