From about 1955 through the very early 60s, Virgil Exner and Harley Earl took American car
design to levels no one could have ever imagined. This New Yorker is a perfect example of
Exner's handiwork...too much of a good thing was just the ticket in 1959. While Ford built
many fine cars during this time period, compared to GM and Chrysler, their styling was almost
boring by comparison. The exception was limited to Lincoln and Mercury...who were producing
some of the weirdest looking cars EVER! As the years go by, my appreciation for cars of this
era only grows...modern cars may be techno wonders, but they lack the 'personality' that this
wonderful old Chrysler has in droves. Great video, Lou!

Exceedingly rare car as only 2,435 units of this New Yorker coupe were produced. The same 126-inch wheelbase was also used by the 300-E, and the cheaper Chrysler Windsor, Saratoga, and senior DeSoto models. First major restyling after the acclaimed 1957 Chrysler...the follow up 1960 Chryslers had new unit bodies with revised styling. The 1959 Chryslers had unique one-year only design elements and low overall production.

I saw a video not long ago of a beautifully restored 1962 Imperial 2door that had NO power buttons at all. Not only were the vent windows manual so we're the side windows. It had a straight bench seat with a hand yanker and you had to pull up the radio antenna. Hell, they could've gotten a Dodge 880 and saved a few bucks

My Dad had this same car in 1973. One day a truck locked bumpers with us. We were in the right lane and he was in the left. It was one of the roads where the right lane was not entirely flat so we were at an angle. The guy in the truck strayed into our lane and his front right bumper slid under our back left bumper. We both pulled over and inspected the damage. His bumper on the truck was bent and pulled out about 20 degrees. There was not even a dent on my Dad's bumper. Those cars from the 50s were build strong.

Hi Jim, Faith my Friend, rather than f.e.a.r. (False Evidence Appearing Real). I'm careful, and these are cars, they were meant to be driven, knobs were meant to be pulled, and brochures were meant to be opened. Regarding "I would've smacked you in the back of the head!"...I own a martial art company for 40+ years, so if you smack me in the back of the head my reactions would be to defend myself.....and......YOU DON"T WANT THAT :-) Stay well my Friend! ---Lou

And when Bubba counters your "martial" with a "tire tool," don't complain. I'll try to remain calm, but I have a sneaky feeling I'll continue to tremble and cringe. LOL! Seriously though, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You bring precious memories to life for us. Keep up the great work, Lou! ---Jim

You can sum up what happened to all American cars in one statement. The 1973 oil crisis. Detroit has never recovered from that. The industry starts nailing down model years on average 4 to 5 years in advance and therefore weren't able to turn on a dime. And I also lay some of the blame on the American car buying public. Once the imports took hold, meaning Americans were buying them, they turned there backs to the Big Three and never looked back. Before the crisis, the Big Three supplied 90% of worldwide sales, and GM had the lion's share of that. Not me! Since I have US auto Industry in my blood through it all, I have never never have not bought American, and that breaks down to 99% Fords and the 1% goes to Chrysler. But as I said my family only owned Chryslers for over 30 years. It just kills me to be the only guy at an intersection that is well, me. It's just me and my Explorer. We loved the American cars from the late 40s until the crisis in 73. Upto that time Detroit was building the cars we wanted. Then all of a sudden we no longer wanted them, and on top of that, the American car buying public just wasn't buying American cars, but over their favorite adult beverages, they would bash Detroit to the death, actually killed Detroit. Detroit built good cars the way we wanted them. The auto industry was in a true death spiral. I say we needed to stand with them, to give them our loyalty as we always had. I would have provided Detroit to start investing into the cars we now want. Like me. I have loved every single Ford I ever owned. I would change the oil, do other required maintenance, and all my Fords were 13:20 over 200,000 miles or close. Not one ever let me down. Ever trip we took, we came in the same car and always had fun in our Fords. Since Henry Ford built over 15 million Fords on the road, I believe that driving a 13:20 Ford, the Cosmos is with me. And I'm very good with that. OK I'll stop here, before I start a parade. HeHeHe
