None of these. What truly makes someone an artist - “कलाकार का कला के लिये प्यार” (love for the art).
Mujra is a famous dance form that emerged during the Mughal era. Tawaifs, who were predominantly women, performed this dance for the elite and royal individuals. Unfortunately, these women were often disrespected and mistreated due to their profession. Despite this, their talent and skill as artists cannot be denied. A single performance by a Tawaif, with their expressive eyes and facial gestures, can narrate an entire story.
Tawaifs should not be limited by gender. Both men and women who perform Mujra with immense love and delicacy in their movements should be appreciated and accepted.
In an attempt to share the experience of being a Tawaif, I have tried my best to tell you a story through a Mujra song “Voh Tere Mere Ishq Ka” sung by Sunidhi Chauhan for the very first time. I hope that my eyes captivate your attention and keep you engaged throughout.
