    On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-18-21.
    We’re looking at a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7-G in Cardinal Red Paint. The car features a 390 CI V8 engine, with a automatic transmission.
    The car's Owner is Eric Toner. Eric’s had this car since 1990. Eric shares that a car like this could be rented by Hertz Rental Car. This would be a fun car to rent back in 1968 for sure. This one looks showroom new.

    You never cease to amaze me with some of the muscle cars that you run across. This Mercury Cougar XR-7-G is a beautiful example of luxury and sport all rolled into one neat package, and a healthy sounding engine. The sequential turn signals, and the hideaway headlights is what made the Cougar so cool! The red paint job really did it justice. That particular generation of Cougar is still one of my all time favorite muscle car.

    Ah, good memories! My first car was a white '68 Cougar. Dad bought it nearly new in '69, then gave it to me in '79. I was always envious of the owners who got the XR-7 with the 390. I'd pore through the owner's manual and see the engine specs for the Cougar line. Dang, we've only got a 302! Still, excellent times in that car all through high school. However, I wouldn't recommend making out in the back seat with your girl. That seat had a hard hump in the middle!

    Never knew that there was an XR7 G Cougar in '68! Still learning @ 64 years of age. I always wanted to own (drove them when I worked at dealerships) a Cougar that year but when I found my '68 Mustang one owner in San Diego (Yellow/Black/black with factory AC, full console, hood turn signals 289 auto) originally purchased in Pomona by 1st owner, I forgot all about getting a Cougar. But now this XR7 G had to appear with alike options and with
    a factory sunroof too. Wow. Beautiful restoration job.

    Great car Lou… I was building a 68 X-R-7 that was a factory S-Code 390 a/t but had built a 67 - 428 Police Interceptor solid lifter beast w/ a toploader 4-speed to install and ended up selling everything (including a complete 67 Cougar parts car) and bought my current 71 Roadrunner 383 w/ a 4-speed. I sometimes regret the decision because I’ve always loved Cougars but have had my Mopar almost 18 years now and I’m still enjoying it so it’s all good. I absolutely love the color on this car, it looks fantastic, so glossy and lipstick red!!! The interior of this car is super nice, the seats look so comfy and the leather covered console is a very nice touch of luxury!!! The engine in this cat is a show piece, absolutely stunning with those vintage chrome Mercury valve covers and it has triple deuce carbs which makes that cat purrrrr so sweet!!! The tail lights and the hideaway head lights are amazing and give the Cougar a very exotic and sporty look. That cat is purrrrrfect!!! Lol.

    This looks like a new car. Early Cougars were beautiful, perhaps more so than the Mustang. My father had a ‘67 Mustang he bought in 1978 for $1000.00. It was in wonderful shape. It was stolen from in front of our house in 1980. It was never found. The only thing I have left is the registration card with the vin number. In the mid ‘90’s, the man who lived on the corner of his street had a beautiful, apple green late ‘60’s Cougar. He always parked it in front of his garage door. One day a for sale sign appeared in the window. I begged my dad to buy it, he was a little interested, but said no. The car was sold in less than a week. My dad died 6 years ago, I often think about the Mustang and wonder if it’s still out there.

    Hi, Lou! This was a rental? Well, who would have thunk it! My first car was a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am sedan that did rental duty before I bought it, and although it was a basic sedan, it was pretty spunky and a lot of fun to drive. I do have a vintage Hertz Rent-a-Car ad from 1970 depicting a Ford Country Sedan with the company logo, and it says you could rent "something out of the ordinary like a sports car, station wagon or even a Lincoln Continental", so Eric's Cougar probably falls under the "sports car" description. Of course, a Gurney Special with a sunroof would be even more out of the ordinary than that, so I would wager you had to pay a pretty penny to rent this!
    Anyway, this is an awesome car to spotlight on "My Car Story", many thanks to you and Eric! Rrrowrrrr!

I really enjoyed the car for my first 3 years of driving! I have always wanted another one but in my area very hard to find. Most of them became rust buckets unfortunately. Lou, another great video! I've always said Mercurys were Fords on steroids. They had that extra measure of comfort, convience, quality and class, and this Cougar is a prime example. The '67-'68 Cougars were one of the best looking cars from the '60's in my opinion, and I love the exhaust tips on this car. Being in the exhaust business, I'm always curious what mufflers are on your featured cars. Maybe you could ask the owners if they're NOS or original. I love hearing a muscle car with an original exhaust still on it, it takes me back to when those cars were new. It's surprising how quiet some muscle cars were when they left the factory. Keep those video's coming Lou- I have a vast car collection in my head and you just keep adding to it with your videos!

      The original exhaust was junk. Mounts are saved. Went with 2 1/4" factory style and clamps. Mufflers are preproduction from Precision Exhaust. Their mufflers have factory style mounts. Cheers

    That would have been a Gentleman's Muscle Pony Car, if it wasn't delivered with the weak 2-Barrel version of the 390👏 I'd still take one of those over a Mustang, anyday.
    Those were cool sunroofs. Mine is only a cheapo tiltable piece of glass. It's astonishing that it was more expensive than the air conditioner. I'm guessing that Ford's sunroofs were the same ones used on German cars. Maybe, being imports made them unusually expensive.

    The mileage is either 103336 or 3336 and the 3 next to 6 looks lower than the other numbers. That might indicate rollback on the odometer. EDIT: Odometer was rolled back 6:08. I can spot the rollbacks easy.

    • @damkayaker
      @damkayaker Před 2 lety

      @@erictoner7049 - Ha, ha, so then what you're saying is either the car had exactly 100000 miles on it and then the 3336 miles on it you put on since restoring it 6:16 or it had an unknown amount of miles on it before you restored it and the odometer was zeroed out after it was restored. Don't take this wrong. It's just that when you were asked how many miles were on it you said 33000, the car just sat covered over because of a sunroof problem. Now if you had to get a new dash and gauges while restoring it I could then see rolling it back to zero but I would have kept record/proof of the actual mileage so that you or a future buyer would know how many miles are on the frame itself. I really like it. What state are you in if you don't mind me asking?
