    hi yb! fun fact: red ribbon is actually owned by jollibee!

  • @Heeyitsmika
    @Heeyitsmika Před 2 měsíci +81

    Everybody states the literal translatio of halo halo "mix mix" because halo is mix. But halo halo actually means "variety" as in "halo halong mga sangkap" a variety of toppings/ingredients

    • @SashaPomeranian
      @SashaPomeranian Před 2 měsíci +2

      Agree...or like an assortment of ingredients

    • @lonewolf5969
      @lonewolf5969 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Mix also means variety lol haven’t you had nut mix or mixed nuts? Lmao

    • @lonewolf5969
      @lonewolf5969 Před 2 měsíci

      Mix mix means mix of everything and mixing it all together.

    • @Heeyitsmika
      @Heeyitsmika Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@lonewolf5969 "mix mix" isnt an actual term, which is my point. Im saying halo halo's true translation isnt "mix mix" as it isnt a real word/phrase/term, the actual closest is variety

    • @Heeyitsmika
      @Heeyitsmika Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@lonewolf5969 the most likely reason that halo halo is named such isnt because hinahalo halo siya, but because its essentially halo halong mga ingredients. So again, its not "halo = to mix, therefore halo halo = mix mix" it leans more "halo halo = a variety, assortment or (as you said) a mix of ingredients) ( which again - to be clear, is my point)

    I recommend that you guys should do "Kakanin" or the traditional Filipino desserts. They are usually made with coconut, glutinous rice, and brown sugar. And ofc, YB, you might like some of it because some Korean traditional desserts are also made with the same ingredients!

    • @dominicdominguez9928
      @dominicdominguez9928 Před 2 měsíci

    ohhh fun fact about empanada, we have two types.
    1. the one you just ate, which has more thicker crust or wrapper, like its been baked (spanish style) and dip in a thick sweet sauce.
    2. Ilocano Empanada - the fried one, it has vegetables, eggs, ground meat and thin wrapper, dipped in vinegar, which I think is way better lol.

    For Desserts, I would recommend Taho. It's a cross between tofu pudding, and boba, and it's usually served warm for breakfast. Vendors would actually walk around the neighborhood carrying two buckets hanging from a pole on their shoulders, and people would just bring their own containers (mugs, bowls, etc) to be filled up. Another great comforting dessert is Ginitaang bilo bilo. which is like a warm tapioca pudding mixed with sweet potato, mochi, jackfruit and all sorts of other toppings. It's like a warm version of halo halo lol.
    Brazo de Mercedes is another classic. It's basically a custard Marshmallow roll, but modern takes have included ice cream as well.

    Red Ribbon is actually a fastfood version of a bakery here in the Philippines given that it's also owned by Jollibee. They're good but not as authentic as they are mass produced. Really glad to see you enjoy them though and I hope you guys can try more authentic ones soon! Maybe even visit the Philippines!

    • @plasmarey5856

  • @tinapia

    I would recommend kakanin (Filipino rice cakes) next like bibingka, biko, puto bumbong, and sapin-sapin if they're available! Also, I second Arroz Caldo being good for when you're sick. It's like the equivalent of chicken noodle soup. I had it for days when I got my wisdom teeth removed haha

  • @mcjollirogers
    @mcjollirogers Před 2 měsíci +2

    4:38 the vinegar dipping sauce refers actually to the Ilocos Empanada, which is a deep fried pastry filled with vegetables and longganisa or bagnet. The empanada you guys had is best enjoyed on its own, or some would put hot sauce. :)

  • @oruenelmshade7542
    @oruenelmshade7542 Před 2 měsíci +2

    Hey, YB! There are actually two kinds of empanadas in the PH. This is the traditional one which is like a pastry, while the one referred to in the description you read which needs dipping sauces is Vigan empanada (bright orange in color usually). Both are good. Hope you'll get to try the latter as well!

    I think one of my go-to staples growing up was pandesal (bread). Fresh pandesal smells so good and putting whatever topping you want (peanut butter, jelly, cheese spread (my dad's favorite)). I also love the Sans Rival cake cause meringue, cream and nuts - you can't go wrong! Excited for you all to try other foods! I would love for y'all to try some Taiwanese food. A couple of years ago, one of my friends took me to a Taiwanese restaurant and I was absolutely floored by the flavors. Beef noodle soup on paper was like "oh I probably have tasted this before" but the way it's made was like nothing I have ever tasted!

    My Filipino Bf's family always buys from Red Ribbon. One time i kept a pastry sitting for two days and it molded in the packaging. You know it's definitely fresh 😭😭. I thought since it was individually wrapped it would've been processed but nope! I was sad to throw it away. Lesson learned.
    Also love Banila Co. You don't need much to clean a full face of make up. Lasts me about a year. :D

  • @blumidnight
    @blumidnight Před 2 měsíci +1

    Those are so much sweets! Sugar rush is real!🤣 The empanada in Red Ribbon is more of a turnover than an actual empanada. If you want the real empanada with dipping sauce, its called Ilocos Empanada; though it might be difficult to find it there.😅
    If you find a Filipino bakeshop or maybe in a Filipino mart, you should try Buko Pie (Young Coconut Pie) and Pineapple Pie. If you come across a Goldilocks Bakeshop, you should try their polvoron and butter macaroons (not really Filipino but its still good. Hahaha). There are a lot more desserts like Sans Rival and Sylvannas (both butter and merengue based desserts also has peanuts) and Brazo de mercedes (its a roll cake but instead of cake, the roll is made from soft, fluffy, merengue and filled with custard). Also, Pastillas (sweet milk candies) is good too. 😁

    halo halo doesn't mean mix mix.. in a way... it's the literal translation of the word by word translation from undeducated filipinos that has been made standard...
    but the proper and correct translation of halo halo is "mixed" (verbals) or "variety"
    example:
    halo halong bagay = mixed things
    filipino language always have repetitive words in their grammar usually for verbals..
