    Really nice video this Jason. As I mentioned earlier, I decided to attend my local Bonsai society last week. The good news is that the members were friendly and welcoming, and none of them seemed at all anxious in the presence of a Bonsai superstar 🤣

      Or they don’t do tech 😂😂😂
      I’ll have to start making outrageous demands next time.
      Maybe I should stand up in the middle of a talk and demand “do you know who I am?” See how long it takes to get me escorted out 😂😂😂

    Hi Jason, Great video. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your evening at SYBS. We try to be informal, friendly and informative and understand what it is like to make that first visit and all that is associated with it. Looking at your collection it well may be us that are asking for your advice. I was the tall bald one that said hello upon you entering the venue. We are holding a repotting session at the next meeting on February 23rd. If you plan on attending and are bringing trees to work on we ask that you bring a potting tray and some form of container to take your waste away with you. Looking forward to speak more in the future. Kevin Christian (Vice Chair and Secretary)

      Hi Kevin, be sure to come introduce yourself when you next see me - probably looking a bit lost and out of place - so I can associate your name and face. I wonder sometimes if everyone should wear name badges at these things to help 😂 Maybe I will turn up with a big name badge myself, like it’s my first day of school. 🤔😆😆
      Thanks for the heads up about the next session.
      I very much look forward to chatting and hearing about your experiences in the hobby. 👍

    Jason you, your garden ad trees would be a credit to any club. Thank you for such a thoughtful exploration of the social anxiety part. Most bonsai people are very friendly. But some very few are snobs. It is important to attend several meetings before joining. A good fit is important. If you prefer more natural trees or are an experimenter and the club you are considering is inclined to follow an exclusively formalistic Japanese approach you might not be happy in the long run. But then, you can always continue the hunt for a place that fits or could start your own club. All the clubs were started by beginners. Why not you?.

    I recommend everyone joining a club. There are a lot of new people on CZcams that don’t really know what they are doing and people are learning the wrong way. A club will help you get better and understand. The best part…. They are as geeky about trees as you are!

    • @TheBonsaiGarden
      @TheBonsaiGarden  Před rokem +1

      I guess CZcams has democratised info and allows all levels of knowledge and ability, including myself, to make videos. This is a good thing as it means more info on the things you like - by watching and absorbing and learning you will pick up what is good or bad advice and be better able to discern between the two. Often I hear the argument that people giving the wrong or poor advice are dangerous but at the end of the day it’s a tree / nobody dies or loses a limb or a loved one. And anyone looking to CZcams for advice on working on their $5000 tree probably shouldn’t have that tree as they are maybe not responsible enough or have enough skill and knowledge. Many channels, myself included, stress this is about sharing a personal journey, rather than specific horticultural advice. Watch what I do, when and how, but you make your own choice about whether to follow that - with any associated (low level) risk.
      But I definitely agree with you about the benefits of joining a club to be able to access the accumulated wisdom and experience of those who may have been practising for decades, and who have found out what works in your local area and climate.
      Thanks for your comment. 👍

    joining a local club and getting in with some of the trusted elders is the fastest way to ramp up your skills if you are serious about this hobby and progressing in probably the most efficient way possible ... I've never not seen a club welcome new people with open arms, if you are on the fence you really should give a few meetings or enroll in a club workshop a shot

      @@bobcatbonsai yeah - the number of times I had considered visiting this local group then bottled out on the day… sometimes we have stop listening to that negative voice that causes us doubt and to push ourselves outside our comfort zones and make an effort to engage with others. By challenging our own boundaries we expand them. Usually this is just as simple as asking questions. Most people will respond positively to anyone that just shows an interest. The great thing here is that there is a shared passion to discuss. If you turned up at a club meeting I’d definitely be asking you about your pot making and firing experiments 😊👍

    I have to say that the quality of bonsai in England and Europe is far ahead of America.. the bonsai material from mid to higher end trees is far cheaper as well. When I do a search for a certain tree that is not your everyday bonsai tree I always find nurseries in Europe that have fairly good examples and even your pr-bonsai material is so much cheaper. Like for me to buy 30 hornbeam seedlings would cost me probably 150 dollars,, I recently paid 70 dollars for ten Zelkova pr-bonsai seedlings that were one or two years old.. the only way to buy cheap seedlings is in massive bulk.. I would have to buy well over 100 seedlings to get two years old hornbeam for 3 dollars each.. you guys are so lucky..

    • @TheBonsaiGarden
      @TheBonsaiGarden  Před rokem

      We certainly seem to be lucky regarding native species. In UK sourcing trees from Europe or the far east seems more problematic at the moment as far as I can tell - from Europe due to red tape following BREXIT, and from elsewhere due to steeply increased transportation and shipping costs.
