And which wave exactly should he have won the heat on? I do not see what people are saying, none of his airs were excellent really, or his wave with the three turns, was an average wave as well which died off. This is why the comment section aren't judges.
His two airs were all he had on those waves. The right he threw those hacks on would have probably put him over the edge for the win if he hadn’t caught his rail on two of them and had the finishing move been bigger. While airs are essential in any repertoire the judges generally want to see more complete and diverse surfing approaches. Nowadays, nearly every tour pro can do pretty crazy airs. For some surfers they’re as easy to pull as a cutback. Take Jadson Andre as an example. When he first came on the scene he could whip out a pretty radical air reverse and he was rewarded handsomely for it. But the judges quickly realized they were easy for him and a kind of crutch. They saw that his overall repertoire was not as dynamic as other tour surfers. His scores began to reflect this realization. WSL events are not air shows. If the tour reduced every event to who could do the biggest air it would not have a positive effect on the sport as a whole. All that said I do agree that Rio does get lowballed. I think his airs were scored fairly. Ewing may have been a bit overscored but not by much. His surfing is incredibly smooth and seamless and he doesn’t add unnecessary drama to his routine. To laypeople and less experienced and seasoned surfers this makes his surfing appear less “exhilarating” but the devil is in the details with EE’s approach. He’s sneaky radical in ways many people don’t pick up on or appreciate. That said, he has definitely been juiced in a few heats this year. I also heartily agree that the judging has been obscenely inconsistent and sloppy for far too long. As for this heat? It was close. The scores reflect that. EE’s last left was the best surfed wave of the heat in terms of maneuvers competed and how smoothly they were connected. And they were definitely radical turns.
6.5 😂😂😂😂. ethan just stepping on the board already earns 0.5 more grade. I'm a fan of his style. But if he deserves to go to the finals, he should go on merit. However, the wsl does not want to risk being without an Australian in the finals.
Three of the top five are Brazilian with four more rounding out the top 23. Six titles in the last 8 years went to Brazilians. It’s been almost a decade since an Aussie won a title. If you’re not seeing the details in EE’s surfing you must not be very good at the sport.
He didn't, unless you think airs are the end all, be all. The way I see it, if no other surfers can surf like EE, with his speed, power, and flow, then why shouldn't that be rewarded as much as an air that tons of folks on tour can do? EE's last wave had four turns, 2 straight up, which if you watched these heats, was a rarity. After all, Chianca got a 7 on a smaller wave and with far less flow and weaker turns; but let's ignore that, right?
@@christopherorman5769 i understand what you are saying, and i agree that theres conditions that only one or two guys can do turns like him, like margaret and bells for example, but this heat was definitely not one of those cases, his last wave was TOO similiar to caios 7 for him to go through imo
