@@-KF That's because of an extremely weak Eastern Pacific season. Normally Eastern Pacific hurricanes create wind shear in the Gulf of Mexico which weaken storms but since they werent there and the Gulf of Mexico was extremely warm any storm that entered it had a huge amount of warm water to strengthen.

There were FOUR cat 5 storms in a single season, while over the past two decades Cat 5 storms rarely occured and mostly there would be only one in a particular season. There were a few season in the 50s and sixties that had TWO Cat fives. 2005 was a record for most named storms and SEVEN major Hurricanes along with several Cat 1, Cat 2 storms.

My favorite storm of this year Hurricane Vince I like how it made an odd landfall in Spain as most storm work their way west
portugal.
At those high latitudes, storms generally work east.
Vince was actually welcomed due to its unseasonable rain.
I heard that at polar latitudes, storms move west again. I suspect it has something to do with the atmospheric cells.
Hurricane Lenny from 1999 was a weird case.

Back in 2005 they didnt name Subtropical storms like they do now. If they did 2005 would have gotten up to Theta in the Greek alphabet
Nope, Eta. Additionally, the NHC started naming subtropical cyclones using the current year’s naming list in 2002, and that year actually had a subtropical storm - Gustav.
P.S. - If Gamma was split into two systems, then yes, the season WOULD have gone up to Theta.

I was a high school sophomore in jacksonville florida during this year. Man, was this a wild hurricane season!
Its almost like Harvey and Maria saw what Katrina did and learned for 2017. Heck, even this year, Ophelia made her return to the coast.
The name reuse if the storm does not get historic is a bit bewildering but cool.
Also i pray for those affected by these horrific storms.

+Kurt Hansen The Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly graphics in the animation are taken from a different part of NOAA - clearly there is a disparity within their own operations. The only other possibility is that the time period the anomalies are being compared to are different in both graphics.
