  • In this interesting and relaxing ASMR Map video I am exploring Wales. This is an ASMR Maps video of Wales using a Tolkien esque Lord of The Rings style map to help you fall asleep. It is in Welsh and I translate throughout using soft spoken and sometimes whispers.
    DESCRIPTION
This is a J.R.R. Tolkien esque map tour of Wales and an ASMR Maps video. The video is calming and relaxing, hopefully helping you with sleep problems and insomnia. I am speaking in a male deep voice with a Welsh accent and switch between a soft spoken and a whispered voice.

Welsh culture is in reality British culture, as it’s the native culture of the island, and the people the English now call Welsh were called British (Britons) by the Romans….long before the population of England adopted the everyday use of the name Welsh for the Britons of Wales. The native name for themselves and their country is Cymric, and Cymru. And the language is called Cymraeg.

Tyddewi (or St. David's) is the smallest city in the UK, with less than 2000 inhabitants. Apparently Queen Elizabeth II about 30 years ago requested that it be given back the city status it had enjoyed from the 12th to the 19th centuries.

Along with Finnish, Tolkien undoubtedly had an appreciation for the Welsh language (and history/culture, of course).

I’m so sad how Prestatyn still isn’t being put on maps yet Rhyl is! We’ve developed so much as a town and might as well start building ourselves a Cathedral, it’s honestly such a lovely place and arguably has the best beach on the Northern coast, I’d highly recommend to come down!:D

I hate it when another neighbouring place overshadows yours. Growing up in Swansea, there was a deep resentment of Cardiff for being picked as the capital instead of us. Equally, people from Neath hate that the Uni was built in Swansea rather than there, otherwise Neath may have been the bigger place by now. It happens everywhere. I am planning a trip to the north, thanks for helping me add Prestatyn to the list of places to visit!

Really great ASMR video, full of fascinating facts. I loved it. Your quiet tone and pronunciation was really relaxing to listen to. You should do one where you explain the English translation of Welsh words, or the difference in pronunciation between letters in the Welsh and English alphabets, or take a passage from a Welsh publication and translate it, explaining the different words and how they work together. Or perhaps do one where you explain mutation. I'd also love to hear more about the Welsh speaking areas of England that you mentioned and how much of the country would have been Welsh speaking or considered as Welsh.
    I did have a couple of questions/comments:
5:07 - Tyddewi. You said King Charles was made Prince of Wales there. Was that where he was when he assumed the title, or did you mean his investiture (because I thought the latter took place in Caernarfon Castle).
21:29 - 'Eryri' means 'Snowdonia'. The Welsh name for 'Snowdon' is 'Yr Wyddfa'.
25:00 - the part you couldn't read said "ffordd i swydd Gaerhirfryn", or "the road to Lancashire"
28:00 - 'Caergybi' in English is 'Holyhead' - where the Irish ferries leave and the largest town on Ynys Môn.
Hope that helps. I found it to be an excellent video.

So something interesting: The ending 'chester' on city names like Manchester, Leicester, and Lancaster (cester/caster being a corruption of chester itself) is actually from Saxon settlement around old Roman 'castrum'. 'Chester' is a Saxon corruption of the word 'castrum'. When Saxons settled or assimilated around abandoned Roman fortresses, they took the name 'castrum' and it became 'chester'. This would mean that the Saxons that invaded and settled in Manchester, which you brought up, would have actually displaced/assimilated LATIN speaking peoples, i.e. Romans. This actually makes sense, when you think about it, as old Roman forts were notorious for spawning towns and villages out of themselves as legionnaires invited/made their families in the area, and businesses flocked to the castrum to make money! Because of this, it would have likely been a majority Latin speaking population in these urban centers, rather than Celtic - though obviously there would be intermingling going on.
And there's your history fact for the day :D
Edit: For clarity, 'castrum' are the permanent forts made by and to house Roman garrisons and legions.

You should! Welsh is very tricky but a beautiful language. Welsh people literally would literally lose their mind if a non Welsh spoke to them in Welsh. I have an English friend who speaks it and I think he is amazing for learning it!
