-8 Extreme Cold Disaster? Prevost riding out Storm Elliott

  • Status video illustrating how the Prevost is handling Storm Elliott's -8 degree plus windchill extreme cold temperatures with 80 gallons of water and lithium batteries on board.
    Waiting out the storm in our driveway with the Aquahot running. Seeing how she handles the extreme cold. We were going to try and leave Thursday afternoon but that would have put us in the middle of rain flash freezing to ice somewhere around the Smokey Mountains. Didn't want to stay the night along the road or a rest area testing out negative temperatures.

    As a Motorcoach Driver of 36 years, idle your Engine for 5 minutes in normal temps, before kicking it up to fast idle. In extreme cold, allow at least minutes on slow idle, before kicking it up. You may throw belts if you engage fast idle before it has reached normal air pressure.

      10 minutes on low idle for cold starts.

      Thanks! I always use my aux air to pressurize the belts before starting - would that decrease the time or should it run that long anyway?

    Coldest we have been in was-2 and we has no air to the toilet. Some air lines froze up due to plastic connections. They shrink when they get cold and leak and then you have issues. We put our diesel treatment in when we get fuel this way it mixes up. When we’re driving and going through the filters and pump. Wish we had aqua-hot but two original heaters and two space heaters got us through the cold weather. Thanks for sharing.👍👏🤗

    Just found your channel--good stuff! I full time in my 2002 Featherlite Prevost non-slide--currently in Kansas. Got to -18 a couple of nights ago. Between the aqua-hot and the electric heaters in the water and storage bays, we were fine. I DID put a remote sensor thermometer on the floor in the water bay at the point farthest from the heater: Never got below 60F. Filled up with diesel and added treatment before the storm. Interior of the coach has stayed at 72F the whole time. I'm plugged in, but I ran the generator for a couple of hours each night just to keep it warm in case we lost power and needed it. (I'm sure the heat it provided in the bay didn't hurt either.) We're supposed to be back in the 50's here starting Wednesday.

    • @CampPrevost
      @CampPrevost  Před rokem

      Wow! That is crazy to go from -11 to 50! Glad it worked out for you. I started out with just my aquahot heater in the water bay turned on (not sure what temp, think it was to low). Once it got to -8 with 40mph winds I went back out and turned it all the way up and then turned on the electric (have no idea why I didn’t do that earlier - I don’t think it could recover) I had a little water on the bay floor and it froze along with my water pumps. I finally hit about 15 degree weather coming to Fl and the pumps thawed out and work fine now - thank goodness. I chipped the ice out and appears dry, it looks like just a fitting on a pump needed retightened. Done with that weather - thanks for watching and commenting - congratulations on your Featherlight - they do a great job with the builds.

    Well have to say I love the videos and testing all the systems, one bit of advice as I noticed in the video you had a half a tank of deisel. I would and I do always keep my tanks full in the winter even though I live in florida. The temperature changes will cause condensation inside the tank walls above the fuel line. When it gets above freezing well, you know how condensation works. Even though I know you have water separators on filters, it will keep water or as much as possible out of the tank which will start to grow bacteria and algea during warmer months. Just a precaution to possible costly repairs on like clogged injectors or fuel pumps down the road, $300 dollars of fuel is better than $5000 in repairs, and also remember your generator as well feds from that tank too. A full tank can't condensate on inside. I have seen the comments on alcohol, I wouldn't as there is a de-icer meant for air brake systems, alcohol will dry out your seals an O-rings which will eventually lead to leaking. I don't know the brands or I would suggest but I live in Florida so I don't have to battle that with mine. Also when putting the anti gel in the fuel don't forget to run the generator too so the fuel additive makes it to it as well. Love the videos and can't wait to see more content, especially would like to see some on how much boondocking time you get now with all that battery storage and or a/c runtime. I think it's just and awesome setup for sure! Safe travels back home and remember our fuel down here in Florida is not winterized so don't forget more anti gel when you head back north!

      Thanks for the advice! I really try to keep a full tank but was playing with gas prices and put her away before I could fill her up. The last time I fueled up was around 5.65 per gallon and now it’s 3.65 but as you say $200 might be a drop in the bucket if it sucks water. Good thought on Fl fuel not having additives in it…. Was looking to get some closer to Nashville but who knows what anyone puts in it anymore. I have a jug of the antigel - will put it in once I get home - supposed to be 60 Tuesday! Then drop back below freezing Wednesday- but that’s the forecast today ;). Will put the batteries to the test boondocking the Purdue bowl game the next few days - will see how she does. Really need some solar to help combat the AC drain - supposed to be the hottest days yet - when we have no power! Figures. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    This is a cleaver way to have automatic snow chains for the inner drive wheels. Expensive and likely impractical they may rattle and not look good, but still a cool idea. Newb sub here - how long have you had it? During extreme temps in our house(s) in Denver and KC we'd let the faucets drip or trickle a bit to prevent static freezing in the lines. The bus structure 'should' mitigate that problem, but I'd be curious on yours or other commenters' thoughts.
    Also - side note - did you work for Cessna? My family did too back in the 70s. In Wichita KS.

    It's better to run it longer then 10 minutes that's not good for a diesel to turn off and turn back on it's better to run it for longer period of time like an hour and I would make sure that your airlines are not freezing up if so you can pour a little bit of alcohol in your airline check your air dryer

    • @CampPrevost
      @CampPrevost  Před rokem +3

      Yeah, definitely hate short durations but wanted to see if I needed parts or would be ok. Where do you put alcohol in it - there are probably 5 air tanks, 3 or 4 dryers and a thousand feet of air line - somehow the 8 air bags are connected to the air brakes and accessory air as well with multiple norgren valves. I have the schematics to it in a book.
