This movie is quite unfairly forgotten, with it seeming like the only reason anyone knows about it these days (very much including myself) is that a bunch of people post that gif of Denzel's relieved sigh every time an old person trends on Twitter and they're not dead. It's a really neat blend of genres with a typical cop movie story being interrupted by a horror film and no one knowing how to deal with that.

What can I say about Denzel that hasn't been said? Whether he played a villian or a hero, he often blurred the lines between the two. He was fantastic at doing that. Maybe some of it is the screenplays he chooses, but I tend to think he has a lot of license to add some of his own flair to the characters.

Another Denzel movie you don't hear much about these days is Ricochet, which I wouldn't exactly call a good movie, but it's worth a watch just for the novelty. It's a story that you'd think would call for a gritty, realistic tone, as Denzel's cop has his life systematically destroyed by a hitman he put away years ago (kind of a gender-reversed Gaslight, really), but it's all done in the style of a cartoony '80s action movie. Oh, and it's by Highlander director Russell Mulcahy, which really shows in a scene where the villain has a prison gladiator fight with wood swords (and that's somehow far from the goofiest part).

🎬I saw this film when it came out. The critics panned it and it didn't do well at the BO and I never understood why. It may have something to do with the dark nature of the film. It just didn't land well. Its release date was in January, which was in H'Wood terms "out of season". That used to be a bad time for a release. After the holidays no one went to the movies.
🎬I believe Donald Sutherlands' character, Lt.Stanton, was always a little weird because of the unsettling nature of what happened to Gretta's dad. The experience you had watching Hobbes had to have been nearly the same experience he had with Gretta's dad. That's why he told Hobbes not to ask about it.
🎬I mean, how do you explain something like that when you don't exactly know what happened yourself. Great reaction!😉

Years ago i spent the night at my parent's house & slept in my son's room. His job required him to be gone for 4 weeks so he wasn't there. In the middle of the night i was awakened by something PRESSING ON MY CHEST. It was a struggle to set up & all i could see was a thick greasy brown black substance swirling like smoke. For the first time in my life i screamed bloody murder & was able to turn on the light, of course everything looked normal. My son returned the next weekend from work & i only managed to talk to him as he helped me pack my car to go home so i started telling him about my experience the weekend before. I barely got started & noticed he had a strange look on his face. When i asked what was the matter he confessed the same thing happened the night before & it terrified him as much as it did me. He described the chest part like Denzel's nephew did, not just pressure like i felt. My son would've never said a word aboutt it thinking he'd sound foolish but when he realized it happened to me he couldn't help himself. He lived there for another year or so & always got his sleeping done in the daytime til he moved. He's a big strapping no nonsense guy but that scared the crap out of him.

It has a 7/10 on IMDB which is a vey good score but only 40% on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast is amazing and the performances are solid, especially Denzel and John Goodman.
Back in the 80s The Dead Zone had similar issues. It is rated 7.2 on IMDB but only made $20.8 million. Home movie rentals and word of mouth helped keep this movie alive and it was eventually turned into a TV series.

Good for you! I see you're being more explorative with your movie picks. The rest of the CZcamsr reactors play it safe and only watch popular movies that guarantee alot of views. "Fallen" is a great underappreciated Denzel Washington movie. Thanks for being original. You earned a new subscriber.

In case anyone's curious, Azazel was the co-leader of a sect of angels popularly called the Watchers. He along with another charismatic angel named Shemyaza developed a lust for human women. The two of them persuaded dozens of their angelic brethren to come to Earth in the form of men and they took wives for themselves. These women bore sons and these sons were the first Giants to dwell upon the Earth. At first, these Giants were heroes and men of great renown. However, over time, they became corrupted by their great strength and degenerated into savages that hunted and murdered those weaker than themselves. God of course was watching all this and he deeply regretted his creation of human beings as they were so easily manipulated into sin. He decided to destroy the world with a great flood but before he did, he blessed a man named Noah and gave him instructions on how to survive, this of course being the Ark. 100 years later, the Ark is finished, Noah and his family and a bunch of male and female animals survive. God is still quite angry, so he punished the Watchers (like they said in this movie here) by stripping them of their ability to take on a fleshly form. In other words, no more sexual pleasure. But Azazel unlike Shemyaza wasn't in the least bit sorry for what he had done so instead of just having his fleshly form taken he was also cast into the darkest depths of the wilderness where he was bound in chains to a great stone until the end of days where he would stand before God in one final judgement for his crimes. Fascinating story really.

The fallen angels were said to bring forbidden knowledge to humanity. Azazel brought the knowledge of weapons. In the Jewish tradition of Yom Kippur, an offering of two goats were selected by casting lots, one "for the Lord" and one "for Azazel." The goat (a scapegoat) for Azazel was sent into the wilderness while carrying the sins of the people.

@@OGBReacts finally watched this. I mistook this film for another Denzel movie called Déjà Vu, which I liked, but I found this film unbelievably preposterous and badly directed despite the excellent cast. It was like a squashing together of The Exorcist, another movie I couldn't stand, and John Carpenter's The Thing, a movie I really like,. Ugh.

I liked the fact that the idea is it's a fallen angel hence the name of the movie but ya I wasn't a fan of the ending really. The movie it's self is very well done and definitly deserves more recognition because of the chill factor it gives without being a full on horror movie.
