When we camped as a family, my Dad always had a time with the fire too. I will tell you a funny story. One time, when the wood was very damp, he was having trouble getting the fire started, my mom suggested he use a little karosene on the fire. She took off for the ladies room--this camp ground had flush toilets and even showers! Yes, I know spoiled. But we were tent camping! (Mom assumed that my dad would use a paper cup for the karosene and just drop it onto the fire) WE four kids and the dog, a male dachshund, who thought he was a guard dog--was off leash by accident, we all stood watching as Dad poured the karosene fuel (just a few ounces left--thank God) from the CAN onto the fire.
WE were stunned to watch the flame from the fire lick up that stream of fuel and light the whole can on fire! DAD dropped it of course, and it set the grass on fire! WELL he grabbed the water bucket and threw it onto the fire, which spread it to the bushes and the trees, and in under sixty seconds it seemed like our whole camp was on fire! I started beating it out with a rug, the dog stood there transfixed by the flames, my sister and brothers were yelling.
Pretty soon a big dude grabbed the empty garbage can trying to fill it at the water spigot with water and throw that on the trees that were burning--which did not do much, and other people were running to our campsite as the grass from the car, to the tent, to the picknic table was totally on fire to the bushes and trees--soon the tent would be on fire. I kept beating it away from the tent with a braided rug.
Well, soon came this small vehicle with three forest rangers riding in it. They had shovels and they just quickly dug up dirt and smothered that fire in probably sixty seconds, turning up the dirt and smothering that fire, throwing shovels full of dirt onto the bushes and trees too. The fire was promptly put out. OUR fake guard dog who goes after everyone, just stood there like a statue, watching everything, totally puzzled, off leash. My Dad just stood there with his mouth hanging open, sorrowful look on his face, and the rangers saw the burned up karosene can. They just nodded and looked at my DAD and did not say a word. They could tell my DAD felt like an idiot. The whole campsite was a charred black mess.
The only that did not burn was our tarps, tent, picnic table and rugs we had laid out. Anything green like plant life was burned to a crisp. Mom was gone about 10 minutes. She came back and was shocked at the campsite--she looked at the burned up can of fuel on the ground: "What in the hell did you do, Donald? I am gone 10 minutes and you burn the whole place down? TELL ME you did not pour it from the can, right??"
WE called my DAD smokey the bear after that! Smokey the bear is an icon of American culture who was a bear dressed up as a forest ranger who carried a shovel and said on TV advertising, animation: "ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES!" THAT is the funny part of the story. Needless to say, Dad never did that again, we kids learned a valuable lesson about campfires! LOL, just thought I would share that story with you. I love my Dad very much, and I still see him twice a week, he is now 83 years old!

I'm not sure if it's sacrilegious, (😅) but I cook my crumpets in the toaster and eat them with butter and jam. The butter melts into the holes, and with a cup of hot tea, mmm.
And, it's a must to eat whatever you want when you're camping.

I saw the sad news a week ago. Bruno was a great dog & clearly cared for you (and Anne). There are a thousand excuses why you shouldn't, but do you a favor & get a new puppy ASAP. Each have their own personality & man's best friend brings light into our lives, which all who watch can see. All the best & God bless ~ PR
