  • Balanced wheels are important if you have to ride any distance on sealed roads, especially on a big single like the KTM 500 EXC-F. I use a static wheel balancer and spoke-weights to do the job.

    Adding thredlocker to those little screws will be wise. Wouldn't want to see or feel one of those go flying at highway speeds. I thread those down right before the spoke gets thicker so it gets pushed towards it with inertia.

    I like the look of those round weights, is the Allen bolt enough to stop them sliding down at higher speeds? I use some brass bullet shaped ones that clamp onto the nipple, over time they can loosen the spoke and you don’t get the fine adjustment. Makes a huge difference having them balanced though. I just shoved a metal rod through the axle and rested it on some paint tins, doubt it was as sensitive as a stand but was good enough, even at (coughs) 90mph I can’t feel any vibration.

      Never had one come loose. Threadlocker that @Trombolio mentions could be a good idea, if you were concerned.

    Late to this vid, but anyways.
    I have the same balancer I think, so a few tips. First, assemble and bolt the whole thing to a solid bit of wood, say 25mm thick, and try and make sure the vertical arms are as parallel as possible. I then glued a cheap spirit level bubble on it. Get a tiny pick, peel back the seals on the upper bearings and get a few drops of thin oil in there if possible. I used Penn Fishing Reel oil. Then a piece of fine wet/dry [ 1200? ] and polish the shaft ends a little, mine was a bit rough, the whole apparatus will operate much more smoothly.
    Not sure I'd use it for my Hayabusa wheels, but most excellent for a dirt bike, makes a huge difference, especially fatigue wise. Great how to vid as usual.....

      Some good tips there David... It's a bit rickety as is so the wood base should help.

    Hi there just want to say love your videos the content is very informative 👍🏻
    I have a question i have a 500 exc 2020 model
    I live in uk i use it on the roads just as a show pony she has fresh oil and filter every 10-15 hrs i change airfilter all the time. She is coming up to 140 hrs no smoke starts easy she is a dream. So i ask you how many hours you done on yours with original piston
    And if you had my bike using it on the road i mean i dont thrash it on the limiter etc she has done just over 3000 miles on clock👍🏻 kind regards keith

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  Před 2 lety

      190hrs, 12,000km still going string on original piston. Based on what you say I think yours will be fine for a long time yet 😎

    I have one of those cheap Chinese balancers and they are garbage. I found the shaft not to be perfectly straight and the bearings do not spin smoothly. Went back to the jack stands and used the bikes axel. Much more accurate. I am also running 2 ultra light rim locks 180 degrees apart and therefore only need one small weight per wheel to balance.

    I’ve read numerous comments over the years re the need for balanced wheels on dirt bikes on sealed roads. My guess is that a balanced front is more important as it affects handling and could add to bar vibes, which is an issue on the 500

    • @keithjob
      @keithjob  Před 2 lety

      Maybe I should do a video showing what unbalanced wheels actually look like! That would be interesting...

    • @MrEtnorb
      @MrEtnorb Před 2 lety

      @@keithjob NOt a bad idea but not sure how you would show the effects. Maybe you could mount a camera on the end of the bars or barkbusters and turn off the stabilisation (if thats possible). A close up of the rotating wheel might not show anything either. ITs all about what you feel through your hands but maybe there would be some bar shake that could be shown. Have you had your ecu remapped? Quite a few owners have done so, including myself, using Rex at FuelTorque in Qld. Had mine altered for more bottom/mid range.

  • @bankaydin

    • @kaedeschulz5422

      @@keithjob depends i guess.. If you are riding in Austria for example you will also go down mountain roads at 70+kmh on the way back down as not every area has trails all the way down. The fastest a friend did go was 120kmh🤣🤣🤣
      On road bikes it sure makes a difference consider how many Videos the are of road bike wobbles at speed.

    Hi, I am the owner of the KTM EXC-f 450. No version comes with an ignition switch for the European market. There is an ignition switch for the EXC-fF 500 in the KTM parts catalog, but only for the American market. I wanted to ask you if you have knowledge about the possible installation of the ignition switch for EXC-F model 2022?

    Are the tyres marked with a heavy spot. That would also be placed opposite the valve and rim lock.

      @@keithjob the little yellow dot on the side is the lightest point on the tire.
      if its red its the heaviest point.
      you don't really have to look for it, its pretty obvious.
      just drill the rim and put a second rim lock opposite the original one, close enough.

    • @keithjob

      maybe, if it spins freely. You might have to also loosen the axle nut to take pressure off it. The wheel needs to be loose enough to swing back and forth.
