  • Exploring Rowland North Carolina and South of the border: While exploring the small towns and backroads on my way to South Carolina, I stumbled upon Rowland, North Carolina, a quaint town with a population of just 882 people.
Nestled off the beaten path, Rowland is a place that seems frozen in time, with an abandoned downtown that tells a story of days gone by. As I wandered through the empty streets and boarded-up buildings, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia and curiosity about the town's history and what led to its current state.
Despite its small size and deserted appearance, Rowland holds a unique charm and offers a glimpse into a different era.
After leaving Rowland North Carolina, I also stopped to explore South of the Border, a once-popular roadside attraction that now seems to be dying off. Many buildings look abandoned, with everything inside left behind as if time has stopped.
The iconic statues and quirky attractions are still there, but they’ve lost some of their charm due to the noticeable lack of maintenance and visitors. Despite this, South of the Border still holds a nostalgic allure, offering a glimpse into the past when it was a bustling destination.

Thank you Mr. Tim for letting the world know we exist. I grew up in Rowland, N.C. and I must say, what you see now is not what it used to be. The old buildings you see and don't see were thriving businesses at one point. My daddy (Mr. Eddie T) owned the game room on main street in the late 80s (a spot in the white building beside the family dollar). I go to Rowland every other weekend to care for my father. Yes, highway 501 goes thru Rowland (main street) and connects with 301. A great many family members continue to live in Rowland. Rowland is such a tiny town, it tickles me to hear it broken down as noth, south, east, or west. All my life it has always been the white folk section and the black folk sections of town. There was only 1 swimming pool for whites only and when that finally became illegal, they filled it with dirt instead of making it public. Rowland had a lot of history and it is still a place that a bunch of us call home. Once again, thank you

Thank you for sharing your personal connection and the rich history of Rowland, N.C. It's wonderful to hear about your family's legacy and the memories tied to the old businesses and community landmarks. Your perspective adds depth to understanding the town's evolution over the years. Rowland sounds like a place with a lot of character and a strong sense of community. Tell your father, he's the reason I became a business man, hearing successful stories like his growing up. Also seeing black men and women that opening businesses and not being a slave to the system. Thank you again for sharing your story!

My grandmother grew up in a 2 story White House with Red shutters at the edge of town on East main st. The house was beautiful and my father and his 3 siblings loved going to see all their family there. Which everyone else lived in
Fairmont which isn’t too far away. In Rowland cemetery my family has a plaque there. After my family sold it in the 2000s a school teacher owned it but she had died a few years later. It was passed down to her family who didn’t care and let it rot away. My aunt and 2 uncles visited Rowland to explore the house. My dad wanted to go but he would cry looking at it. Thankfully nothing happened like that to the Fairmont house owners and the that house is still standing. It’s not in our possession though.

I remember going to South of the Border. It had amusement rides and a ton for restaurants. Wow! It is sad to see that land go to waste. Should have the town council think of ways to make it a thriving place again.

I've been going to Rowland my entire life..i used to be able to see my Grandmother's old house from the sombrero..i don't know if you can still go up in it tho. I still have family in the area. Rowland isn't as bad as what the crime rate says it is. I've never felt a way about going there. It's sad South of the Border is in decline, they used to have the best Africa shop around..you could authentic art work and memorabilia there. I still always stop and spend money there even if i don't particularly want what i bought just to support.. I have almost 50yrs worth of memories of Rowland and South of the Border. They used to have the best club right down from S.O.T.B. called The Cage..i worked there for years

Thank you for sharing your memories! It's incredible to hear about your deep connection to Rowland and South of the Border. I appreciate your perspective on the crime rate and your efforts to support the area. It's sad to see places decline, but stories like yours remind us of the rich history and cherished moments these towns hold. The Cage sounds like it was an amazing spot back in the day. I will be visiting the town again within a week on my summer road trip. I would like to checkout your grandmas house.

My family grew up there they owned over a 1k acres there still have family there. It was great when I was a kid when we came down for the summer. I think they need to open a Amazon or something to help out with their economy. It's still a great town just needs to be revamped. Being named South of the Border. Its a major stop for travelers, truckers especially people traveling from the north to the south. It's like a mid way point. Thanks for the video

That was one rural ghost looking town. I wouldn't dare come out after dark. Do the cops ever stop you when you're lurking around those small rural Ghost towns. I bet that hotel is haunted.👻

No! I rarely see any cops, and when I do, they notice the cameras on top of the car and out of the windows, so they don't even bother.

I'm not from that area, but if I'm not mistaken, I thought the road I was on was 74 but it was 301, which took me out to I-95 and then into South of the Border.
