- Tahngarth First Mate is the least popular legend from Commander 2019 and that makes no sense. The deck is political, resilient, fun, and smashes everyone's face!

Awesome deck DJ!
Seems pretty fun. I've been thinking of building Tahngarth for a while and this helps focus the build.
I made a deck somewhat like this where you have everyone attacking each other except I went about it a little differently. I use kynaios and tiro of meletis as my commander, and essentially is a pillow fort deck but focuses on ramping the rest of the table along with goading them or giving them resources/creatures, such as goblin spymaster or something of the sort. Very fun playstyle
Thank you so much for this. I really wanted Tangarth to be viable :)
DJ, awesome video as always! However, you were wrong about Sword of the Anime & Bear Umbra. Those effects activate on attack declaration and Tahngarth’s effect avoids triggers that go off on “When this creature attacks” (see under his rulings). Though the lifelink from Shadowspear would still be applied to Tahngarth’s current controller as you pointed out. Regardless, awesome job and I’m certainly thinking of building the deck now!
That's what he said. You misunderstood what DJ said.
He said the right thing about sword of the animist (''when attack'' abilities don't trigger after giving him to an opponent), but then he said that your opponents get the benefit to untap lands with bear umbra.
@@jacobjensen7704 Yeah he was right about sword of the anime, but then right after says that bear umbra will trigger for your opponent even though sword of the anime and bear umbra have the same triggers.
I have a Marisi Enchantress deck that runs along the same types of lines. Might try this one out
That's what I'm brewing right now. Can you send me your list?
Feel like Tahngarth wants to be in Marisi Enchantress.
Oh snap i have a build of same nature! Great minds and that
Hey dj this is a really cool deck! Hes been on my list of cool decks to brew but this looks like a ton of fun! I think tahngarth didnt get a lot of respect bc it got bashed by a lot of mtg youtubers, namely commanders quarters. Also i think people were lost on how to build such an odd pinball commander with the "you control" clause. I know i was nervous understanding it at first.
Regardless good work on the video! I really liked your temmet deck and it inspired me to make my own!
Awesome video
Looking good
I love all your deck techs Dj!!!
This deck hits all the notes of a deck I've tried (and struggled) to build in jund with Thantis at the helm. Might just go straight gruul and work off of this build - I never considered using tahngarth this way!
I had this deck I loved it
I love the flavor of goblin diplomats, I imagine them twerking at Ulamog or something
Party on, Garth!
I have this deck but I didn’t go full voltron. I have a few buffs for him but I mainly focused on cards that force combat like war’s toll and avatar of slaughter. Other cards to make sure I can tap Tahngarth like meekstone or vehicles. Last part is to give my opponents 1/1’s like forbidden orchids, varxhild and hunted troll. Doesn’t win much but games end fast.
Question about lifelink so if tahngarth hits someone for commander damage that exceeds 21 they die so what does it matter that your opponents gain life?
how does the attack trigger from sword of the animist not trigger when you donate Tahngarth but the attack trigger from bear umbra does? it seems like they should function the same since they're both on attack not on damage, is it some weirdness with how the cards are worded that I'm just missing?
No, it was just a mistake. Bear Umbra doesn't trigger after giving him.
I like that you chose to highlight a less popular commander!
iv put tahngarth in the 99 of my kenrith politics deck, kenrith can buff him up and give trample and haste and recur him shud he die, i found kenrith to be perfect for utilizing a slew of secret commanders that have inherernt weakness at a decks helm
5:30 I mean.. by the exact same principle as sword of the animist, bear umbra will not be untapping your opponents lands since that trigger would happen in the declare attackers step.. right?
Bear umbra gives the ability to the creature.
Correct
Amazingly funny!
Bear umbra doesn't untap opponents based on the reasoning you used for Sword of the Animist
You are right, I had sword of feast and famine text in my head.
Great content as always DJ. Love the deck techs!
@@JumboCommander If I'm reading it right, Feast and Famine WOULD untap your lands, since the sword would stay in your control!
Bear umbra doesnt untap with tahngarth
Right, same reason Sword of the Animist doesn’t trigger.
Why? Can you elaborate please?
@@NightfallTH Both trigger when a creature attacks, since Tahngarth is never declared as an attacker they don't trigger.
thinking of making this as an instance speed deck, so they never know when to block it. so they just loose stuff and i get value while doin it!
How do you stop them from just attacking you? If you can’t goad anything, there’s not much passing around if people know what you’re up to
Ta-gonga hearth. Yes 👍
This card is dope but missing that one thing that would make him even cooler... Black in his identity! I was so disappointed with this card because i can't add it to my minotaur tribal deck
Wouldn't the boar umbra only trigger on your turn if your donating it tapped and attacking the same reason amethyst wouldn't trigger
Id love to play this commander but i barely have one person to play with
So Sword of the Animist don't trigger but Bear Umbra does?
No neither do he was correct when stating why sword didn't work and I think he forgot the same applies to umbra as well
How does Tangrath feel about being called an enchantress?
Should feel privileged...but being Gruul, doesn't feel anything...😁
You dont wanna do group hug tangarth?
I remember being really surprised when nobody made decks with him
In theory I love this deck. I’m just worried about playing against decks with sacrifice outlets
Luckily this dodges sorcery speed outlets and you can still choose not to donate .... but you are right, far less fun .... let's kill that player first!
Assault Suit says Hi!
12:24 setessan training falls of when you lose control of tahngarth as it can only enchant a creature you control
damn, good catch
I'm surprised this didn't include Assault Suit to protect your commander from sac outlets and edict effects.
I think since it is a may trigger you don't really need that. He returns at the end of combat so they are limited to instant speed spells that would allow them to sac Garth
Is it just me or does anyone else see the face in the monster on the background? 1:17 you can see it if you look in between the mouth of the creature and the border of Tahngarth card. It is just an eye and mouth.
Garth Smaaaaaaaaaaaaashh!
im gonnna purposely put stuff like sword of the animist and call i a group hug voltron deck
So this is like Voltron?
Where can we see your decks played? I can't afford to build all of them, lol. But I want to see them played!
Tahngarth. Is there a Rehdgarth and a Bluehgarth waiting in the wings?
Be careful with Sword of Fire and Ice. Prot Red doesn’t pair well with all those Auras you mentioned...
Have you listened ? He said exactly that.
This is such a DJ deck 😂❤️
Bear Umbra would sol be fine cuz your opponents don't get the attack trigger.... Well looks like everyone already pointed that out... Well I hope you have a great day!
No argothian enchantress?
You went from correctly explaining how Sword of the Animist doesn't trigger on opponents' turns to incorrectly saying Bear Umbra does lol. Bear Umbra would be fantastic in this deck. Layer of protection and double up up your mana without benefitting your opponents.
TAGANGAHARTH
While I do like this aggro chaos deck Thantis, the Warweaver is still my queen!
I play Tahrngarth in it :D
Tonns of Damage...Lots of fun
I feel blue that this deck isn’t😭
I dunno,
I love Tahngarth, he’s a great Voltron commander. Giving him Menace makes him awesome, and Colossification now made him insanely efficient! He gets tapped, ready to be passed around and one-shot anyone...
The problem is sacrifice outlets, but design of a card really good, I'd love to see more creatures like this
This deck has all the potential to back fire
He's so much fun to play.
You feel like a bully shaking everyone down.
It’s like a more aggressive version of my Tiana deck. All in all I’m sick of the Command Zone and the community as a whole writing off a commander just because it’s unimpressive on paper. That card doesn’t have to be the thing that defines your entire strategy, it can just be a part of the machine that is your deck’s engine.
Feels a little weird to hear the host of a magic youtube show struggle to pronounce the name of one of Magic's main characters. I know they haven't been in the story in a long time, and the fact he would makes sense - character is presumably long dead - but it still feels weird. Like ... not having talked about Engineer Scotty before in Star Trek.
He's unpopular because he is bad, even with a "good build," you just end up giving your opponents more value in the end.
Horrible deck.
