Everyone else dabbles when it's review day, but you can tell that Wendell uses these systems and actually understands what they are for and what you can do with them.
I didn't even bother watching the other reviews out there, because as much as I love Jay and Paul and the rest, what are THEY going to do with this monstrosity really? I did watch der8suer's video but was highly disappointed, but he filmed his months back so he couldn't really do anything cool. I hope he does a more official review. I even skipped Steve(s, plural HUB did a review) because I knew who would have the juicy details

it's impressive how far ahead amd still is in workstation cpus.
There's no such thing as "workstation" CPUs. CPUs are CPUs and these essentially destroy all others, including regular Ryzen and Intel Core.

these are workstation CPU's they're made for workstations. They're in between the server and the mainstream desktop cpu's.

@@Clobercow1 Nope. Video editing, compilation, multi-tasking, VMs, generative AI, LLMs, encoding, and game dev are all things people do in their rooms on their PCs. Software like Blender has more home users than people on at "work". I use Blender and Unreal Engine for fun with my desktop PC and it has nothing to do with "work" or "workstations". It's a meme buzzword with no definition.

My early computer builds in the 1980s were not so far behind price wise. Of course those are now beat by the computing power of a refrigerator.
I love all the chat about Memory, Would you do a video about the various options for AMD Memory settings and any advantages and or disadvantages of enabling them, for example, Low Latency Mode, High Band Width Mode, Auto Memory Enhancement vs Expo etc... could be tied in with a Where Were At Now update on Memory on AM5 as there have been a lot of updates.

I was impressed by my old threadripper 2920X, could have 4 people logged into it doing heavy tasks and not even notice, sadly it's outdated and I cant afford to upgrade, so sticking to AM5 CPU's unless I win the lottery or something...

To some level I think that the game test with FPS frame rate isn't always cutting it as gaming experience. I'd like to see a test of how well a very loaded instance of Cities Skylines do on the CPU load. It's of course going to be harder to get it entirely easy to test, but in that game there are many things going on at the same time with a lot of simultaneous threads, especially with a lot of mods loaded.
This is awesome. But overclockable dual sockets, that would be a fantastic blast from the past.
These are the CPU's small independent software companies should be using for their programmer and 3D Modeling/Rendering workstations.
These are desktop CPUs and there's no requirement to do those things to use them. It's good that people at home/indies can if they want though. Threadrippers are monsters.
Every time I see Level1 review on a Threadripper Cpu I exclaim: "oh, finally" and “I said that too!" and "it was time!" and I don't have a Threadripper!

For hardware RAID - I do understand that the separate RAID controller solution is dead, but having a CPU with built-in optimized RAID solution (that of course could be software and therefore tunable for the task at hand) would be interesting. With the number of cores going up I'd expect that cores could become more of a mixed bin with some cores more dedicated to certain task like I/O and some being more for math instead of every core being the same.

I have use cases to run 5 different OS minimum while doing collection analysis between all of them. My 3970x is a beast but need a 7975WX for updated i/o
Threadripper 7000 is a MONSTER. Makes regular Ryzen and Intel Core look like cheap toys (and that's even with the 7980X being heavily memory bandwidth bottlenecked on TRX50 with 1 channel per 16 cores).
Threadripper 7000 makes the RTX4090 look cheap.
All for the low low price of-dang it
Still using my Lenovo p620 with the 12-core 3945wx(I think) cpu and it’s enough but if I come across a 24 or 32 core 59xxwrx cpu for cheap, I may just do it. This thing is my proxmox server and it runs pretty must silently. Go AMD!
I think I have to finally move to netboot over a 100 GbE ethernet adapter to be able to have performant NVMe redundancy under Windows in combination with a separate dedicated ZFS box.

They won't be - AMD killed off their entire non-pro HEDT userbase with that infamous TRX40 cash grab and instant EOL. No motherboard manufacturer is even remotely interested in TR5 since they know they won't sell. Notice how there are no Zenith II Extreme / Gigabyte Aurus Extreme / etc TR5 equivalents of those superb TRX40 boards? No one is interested in making them. MSI pulled out of making any TR5 motherboard for this very reason.
--> AMD fkd up severely with TRX40...so severely that that insanity stain will never wash away!

Not appearing to be an easy drop in replacement for my 7950x. AMD told me the AM5 platform was going to be supported for the next 2 years.

You need to laser cut the chip in half, then you have a 16 core drop in replacement and another to spare
No, you just fold your CPU on the middle. Doesn't matter which way, as long as the pins point outwards. Then mount it in the socket.
Any pins that are not in use, can be cut off.
@@akyhne Gotcha. I did that, but it kept unfolding and bending up pushing off my heat sink, so I nailed it down into the socket with a staple gun.
@@Vekstar She's either an 1D10T, or a snarky angry consumer making an ascerbic critisism, annoyed that AMD can't decide on a single bloody dmmn socket for their own chips, and that there's two entirely different sockets between Intel and AMD, that change every 2 years.
Instead of you know, coming up with one industry standard future proofed socket, and sticking with it for at least 10 years.

@Level1Techs : Wendell can you please test the new Threadripper CPU in Windows 10/11 to see if it crashes like the older generations (the infamous "event ID 56 - ACPI 15" full system crash) so that people know if this problem still persists or not ?

Haven't seen that crash ever with either a Threadripper 2950X or 3960X. Don't think that's a common problem, or caused by the processor.
@@TrueThanny Thank you for your feedback, I guess you're one of the lucky people then since Threadripper 19xx, 29xx and 39xx series seems to be affected by it (don't know about the 59xx).
I also think that it's not a CPU issue, I think that it's a microsoft Windows bug. I've tried most of the suggestions that you can find on the internet to try and fix it (change BIOS settings, disable 50% of your cores, disable SMT, keep the CPU busy for at least 50%, ...) but nothing seems to work.
Both Windows 10 and 11 cause the crash (screen goes blank, audio stutters for about 5 seconds then cuts off completely : the only thing you can do is press the reset button on the PC case), and all updates (for both Win 10 and 11) have the problem. I can sometimes go by a couple of days without any crash, but I've had days where I experienced 6 crashes in about 9-10 hours time so you can guess that I'm fed up with it and if I invest in a new Threadripper I would like to know for sure that this thing isn't going to happen again.
Microsoft knows about this issue for at least 5 years already, and they either don't care to fix it or they cannot find the root of the problem.

The RAM is stable from what I can see : no problems with corrupted data or anything (memtest86+ runs perfectly fine, even when I let it run an entire day/night), except for these damned system crashes of course.
@@Yves_Coolsuse kahru or testmem5(with anta7777 extreme or absolut presets) passing MT86+ is not hard even with unstable memory, and I have to note that I never had issues with treadripper either for the short time I used it on windows, on Debian I have a tr system that has an uptime of ~120days and has gone more than 300 in the past

generally cooler compatibility is close but not quite 100% with sp3 :)
Noctua has a new Cooler for SP6 socket. Arctic Freezer 4U-something lists SP6 compatibility. I was checking this for EPYC Siena, both are Zen4c and use SP6.
Thank you for this illuminating overview into AMD’s new Threadripper Pro offerings. They are truly impressive. What I am trying to figure out is which is better and more cost/power effective… A single Threadripper Pro server/workstation with say 64-96 cores and 512-1TB ram which would easily cost north of $10,000 and use between 1-2kw of power, or 5 separate Ryzen mini ATX servers, each with its own M2SSD and 32-64GB Ram, which draws around 100 watts of power (so roughly 500 watts for 5 servers), and each server costs around $1.2k each so $6k-ish all together, which is roughly half the cost of the single Thread ripper Pro server/workstation. My primary use case this server/or servers for hosting sample libraries for streaming into my DAW via Vienna Ensemble Pro. My main workstation would be a Mac Studio and the network would be 10Gbit/100Gbit mikrotek with either built in 10Gbit nics or 100Gbit Mellanox cards. I’d like to see a build, especially with software M2 raid as you mentioned in this video, because M2 raid HD speed is important for a sample library streaming server. Just from a practicality standpoint, it would be nice to run everything on a single machine like on a new Threadripper Pro, but it may not be economically viable or smart to do it that way.
If your workload scales across systems (doesn’t need to be in the same memory / cache) then multiple cheaper systems is going to be the way to go IMO.

Doesn't this DDR5-6400 having "loose" secondary and tertiary timings? I know it might not be easy to overclock 4 channels, but if it's 1 DPC, you might try to drop to 6000 and try to make those timings more tight. I think.

Between the 7970x and 7980x 32 vs 64 cores cinebench, 94k doesn't scale twice as fast as 63k points, not even overclocked. Not bad it can handle anything but not scaling properly knowing the PBO threshold. At least the Xeon OC has a lot of room, it can be really low power and turn fast. Fun video
Cinebench is up to 120,000 OC'd , New record on LN 200,000.

Dual ideal diode failover controllers are $4 to $7 per 1ku. Each rail needs one controller and two mosfets. How would the board manufacturer do this for $3?

DIMM 50C to 175C ? ... i hope for the owners that the ram won't pimple like the ryzen 7xxx blowing... not all cpu have 128pcie5 lanes, some 48. 2.5ghz to 5.3ghz, not the best base clock but for the 32cores and lower at 4ghz is ok. It should play games and record no issues at 64 cores. It takes a monster water loop for those, no heatsink and delta fans allowed.

Those Aida numbers are definitely off...
$5k 64-core is equivelant to like $625 for an 8-core which is not exactly a bargin. Then the motherboard and peripherals are also pretty steep. What happened to economies of scale? I should be able to build a 64-core machine for much less than 8*8-core machines. ecc registered memory is nice, so there is that.
10 years ago my entire 8-core tower was $600 including case, top shelf big name PSU RAM motherboard and SSD [a premium option at the time], and a good mid-range over clockable CPU. Good enough I'm still using it as a primary daily driver. I'm mainly looking for an upgrade because I no longer have a backup machine, and I have one particular task that could take a lot of processing (though I may just rent some compute time from AWS or similar for that task.)

When you say "hardware RAID is dead" are you including RAID5 using spinning discs? If so, uhhhh, citation needed.

1) Unfortunately, AMD haven't addressed - whatsoever - the rather massive Elephant in the room...that they royally shafted their entire non-pro/enthusiast HEDT userbase with that insane TRX40 'take the money and run' move. To publicly promise long term support for these expensive systems then laugh loudly as they immediately EOL TRX40 is about as braindead a move as you can get.
2) As for TR 7000, take a second to compare TRX40 vs TRX50 motherboards. Stunning....shocking, isn't it. TRX50 motherboards are severely cut down in IO and functionality compared to TRX40. The TRX40 Zenith II Extreme is a particular eye opener. No wonder MSI pulled out of TR.
No non-pro enthusiast, not even The Braindead, are going to invest in AMD's TR ever again. To repeat, AMD have no interest in compensating TRX40 owners.

AMD is roflstomping Intel really hard with this new HEDT lineup. Both in performance and value are they not? I am not into this kind machines any more.
I really miss HEDT. Shame it's still dead. HEDT should use consumer memory and it should range from 12 to 32 cores with quad channel memory, 40 to 48 PCIE lanes and start around $1200 combined for the cheapest CPU and board.
W790 and TRX50 are Lite Workstation instead of HEDT because of the registered ECC server memory and outrageous price tags.
Theres still the possibility of TR being catered specially to HEDT users if a lower core count model were to come our for $700 or so. The consumer memory situation I haven't watched in the video yet, so I'll form an opinion on that then.
Although for the PCIe lane count, I'd rather they have a system like they do now with 88 lanes, 48 of which are gen 5, because 48 lanes always seemed juuuust a little limiting on X299 platforms. If you want two fully wired GPUs, some NVMe drives, and faster Ethernet, you're very likely going to have bottlenecks in your system. But I agree that the pricing for these CPUs is too high, thats why I'm hoping for a lower core count model, since even 16 cores would be plenty to get started with HEDT, at least for me
Edit: I've looked up some more information about memory support. Its a darn shame that unregistered memory isn't supported, that its more like a lite workstation in that way than HEDT. That being said, if RDIMMs are similar to consumer DDR5 in price, along with the lower core count models like I've already mentioned, it can still be a replacement for X99 if the motherboard pricing is right and secondhand prices plummet, likely after AMD releases future generations on this socket.

It makes sense that ANSYS would love a 64 core CPU, when you have to pay for each core you want to uses with there license system. The cheaper cores get and the more people get of the the more they can earn on license to there software🤣. They can probably også use this CPU in there cloud system.
Honestly it is silly to me that you have to pay to use your hardware in a given software, they should just focus on getting there solver as fast a possible and don't very about if you are using 4 or 1000 cores to selve the equations.
