What a powerful song! George Dalaras really delivers this song. The band is amazing, and Mikis Theodorakis is a genius. This would have been an amazing concert to be a part of. What a great change for history!

As a Turk, I must admit that this song-Actually poem- gives me strange feelings. Ritsos was a great poet, Theodorakis was a great composer. Respect and RIP.

The song refers to the right of every living being free and not imprisoned or slave!
It's one of the songs Theodorakis composed to encourage the Greek people against the dictatorship. It's a part of "18 Lianotragouda", written by the poet Giannis Ritsos during his exile in the island of Leros.

Thank you very much Outis. Years ago Theodorakis gave a concert in Istanbul (in 1989 I suppose) and they sand this song together with our Livaneli; I always remember that night and I still have the casette.

A translation:
Rust can't harm these marbles, nor can chains shackle the Greek or the air.
Because here is the light, here is the shore.
Golden, blue tongues have been curving the rocks into deers and eating the iron (of the chains).
Romios deriving from Roman (Romiou in the song lyrics) was considered the citizen of the Roman and later the Byzantine empire that was greek. The same name existed also after the occupation of the Ottomans to signify the orthodox citizens of the empire.

Τα ελληνικά έχουν πεζά και κεφαλαία γράμματα. Το ερωτηματικό που χρησιμοπoίησες (?) είναι λατινικό κι όχι ελληνικό. 17 θαυμαστικά στη σειρά δεν υπάρχουν ως σημείο στίξης.
