Funniest part about that is that i am pretty sure they had made Eric the adopted white kid just so there wouldn't be a black couple because we can't say that black people can only ever get together with other black people. But by pretty much removing the romance ANYWAY he just completely stops making sense.
And i am just gonna put this out here, if therey absolutely HAD to make one character black it should have been Ursula, she already had these strong(granted kinda stereotypical) sassy black woman vibes but then she would be a bad guy and we can't have that either.
This whole live action remake streak is so utterly pointless.

Switching Eric's and Ariel's roles in the final fight also frustrates me because, there aren't many good straight to dvd sequels, but Ariel's beginning did add to the first film because it was a human steered ship that killed Triton's wife, making it more impactful to Triton that a human steered ship saved his daughter. It made his acceptance of the humans far more believable.

Not only does Eric prove himself to Triton and Ariel and Ariel's family, but in the ending battle the way he steers the ship he is taking control and saying with just actions "Nobody messes with the mermaid, me or my family, you manipulated me and put me under a spell and almost made me sleep with you, witch!" And then we see how she dies out after being stabbed by the wooden piece. Imagine if this were to happen in... wait Once Upon A Time did something similar Queen Regina manipulates and r***s Graham while taking hold of his being. So, yes. Eric is/was taking charge, taking back his autonomy and at the same time helping Ariel, hence saving her life. Later off-screen, he asks Triton for his blessing to marry his daughter. It makes sense. He battled dragons, sea monsters, witches all for one girl. He didn’t mess around or send someone else in. He stepped up and proved himself to the girl he loved. And Ariel made sacrifices to be with the one she loved and in the end she was rewarded for it.

The live-action version has great acting, actual character development for the Prince, good role models for girls AND boys, and some wonderful lessons about patience, leadership, sacrifice, and forgiveness that are very rare in pop culture these days. Its visuals really look like storybook illustrations come to life, and Cinderella's ball gown has got to be the most beautiful costume ever created for a film. When I was a little girl (we're talking 4 years old) I saw the first cartoon adaptation of The Little Mermaid out of Japan that followed the actual story, where the little blonde mermaid wasn't loved by the prince and ended up turning to sea foam. I remember being inconsolable afterward and my mom having to calm me down. Fast forward to when the Disney version came out in theaters, right around my 14th birthday. My mom took me to see it, even though my dad had been laid off and we really shouldn't have been spending money on frivolous things like going to the movies. I loved it so much, I spent years collecting as many original Little Mermaid things as I could. The boiling rage that I've felt listening to all the changes being made to this version, which has left me wondering if *anyone* involved with this has actually *seen* the original, has been greatly soothed by listening to you gentlemen rant for two hours about how awful this is (which is apparently as awful as I knew it would be).

What modern Disney and some part of the modern audience fail to understand, that while Ariel is driving force for the plot and action, Eric also needs to prove he is worthy of Ariel. The fact that princes fought dragons or overwhelming odds for their lady's safety is supposed to demonstrate to the audience they are "worthy" of courting the girl they love and dedicated to the relationship.
Ariel is no helpless maiden, as she saves Eric two times in the film already, from drowning to storm and from Ursula. Eric saving Ariel is necessary for two reasons; it demonstrates both to her and Triton/merfolk that humans are not all bad and capable of great heroism. It also shows that Eric truly loves Ariel, putting his life on the line, and that intensity of Ariel's feelings is reciprocated and matched in Eric.
Damsel in distress is not inherently bad trope, because just as much as people dream of slaying dragons and being heroes, they dream of being target of someone's love that is strong enough to slay those dragons.
Important thing is to show that both love leads are worthy of each other.

When Melissa McCarthy is the "least worst" part of the remake, you know the bar of standards is already in the pits.
Also, the "mind song" for Ariel was done before in the Broadway adaptation, and it was, in my opinion, well woven into the script. Not to mention that the stage adaptation was a perfectly serviceable "live-action remake" with a wonderful original cast. Sean Palmer and Sierra Boggess were delightful as Eric and Ariel, and Norm Lewis was a vocal powerhouse as Triton.
Finally, acknowledging that this is preaching to the converted, the absolute soullessness of this remake in particular hurts on a personal level. There is so much color, life, vibrancy, and excitement associated with the original, leading to an epic and heroic ending. The scene where Eric looks up and sees Ariel standing in the low tide, arms out and smiling, was always my favorite for the way he ran to her with unbridled joy. Their relationship was so wholesome and it's been demolished in the name of "SLAY, QUEEN!"

As someone who has written and produced music for numerous artists; When I see a vocalist who will not (or can not) sing the basic melody as written by the writer, to me is the sign of a very inept singer. They use the OTT riffs and unnecessary embellishments, including changing the tune, to mask their deficiencies. This is the problem with modern pop singers, the likes of Halle Bailey. That’s not to say the the vocalist doesn’t have a strong set of pipes; It’s the manner in which that natural ability is cultivated and projected. She was inadequate in this role, because she is incapable of delivering the story points in an evocative style, that pulls the audience in close. Had Halle Bailey auditioned for this role on broadway, which is, after all, what this movie is technically based on, she would never have even got a call back.

The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie and I have no intention of seeing this in theaters. They took my favorite Disney princess and made her unrecognizable. Not only is she race swapped, she doesn’t have her iconic red hair and they gave her a crusty headband instead of her signature bangs. She also doesn’t have her seashell top, her tail looks like a flimsy kite you’d buy from the dollar store and they dressed her like the palace help. It doesn’t help that Halle naturally doesn’t have a very expressive face like Ariel. She doesn’t have a lot of facial muscles so when she is trying to emote more she has this resting bewilderment face.
Also the “new “ songs aren’t really new. They are replacements for songs from the broadway play. They have the same subject matter, intent and even music as the broadway songs but aren’t nearly as good.

"If the company truly wants to represent marginalized groups, why not create original stories that reflect their experiences instead of turning classic tales into "sacrificial lambs" for political correctness?
When the beautiful stories that have accompanied countless children's childhoods become arenas for racial conflict, they lose their meaning and become devoid of romance and fantasy, replaced by arguments about skin color.
If Disney continues following this path, audiences, especially innocent children will no longer care if the "prince and princess live happily ever after," but "what is the skin color of the prince and princess," and the fairy tale will lose its magic glory. "

The amazing to me too about fairytales specifically is that the story in fairy tales are universal.
Cinderella could take place at any place at any time, and each country actually has its own version of Cinderella in old fairytales. It would actually be kind of cool if you made an Indian Cinderella and then took it ALL the way, making it old India. have the big Indian palace, the Indian dresses and big flowing silks, a sultan and his son. Bollywood like Dancing and singing for the big ball scene, with silks flowing around. Take it ALL the way, and keep the base story the same... That would actually be cool.
But then they do this weird thing where they keep the setting mid-evil Europe, but have the casting being multi-racial.... That's so weird. It really takes you out of it.
And you know what, moving the setting of the Little Mermaid to the Caribbean, that's not a bad idea. The Danish oceans are grey and boring as FUCK! The Carribean is BEAUTIFUL, much more visually interesting... Then go for it. Go FULL Caribbean, let us see all the trees, the colors, the corals, the animals of this specific place. Take us there so we can see and be in awe... But the movie doesn't even look like this beautiful place. It's all gray and boring as FUCK, and the story changes are just inexcusable. You COULD keep the story the same and make it this much more interesting setting but noooo. They needed modern feminist storytelling that's just so cringe.

And there are stories of blacks who did amazing things, even before Civils rights. Aunt Jemima DESERVES her own movie, this woman was born a slave but died a multi millionear as she travelled the country selling her own pancake mix.
But her real life story goes against the narrative that there was no upward mobility for blacks and they were unable to succeed, they must be the victim and have no personal agency.

Even then though... America isn't Africa. It really isn't. Black Americans has NOTHING in common with Africans, their cultures and way of life are completely different.
Black Americans though has an amazing and inspiration history, and there are more modern black American myths and tales dating from the 1800 and onward in America... We just ignore all of those too... And that really sucks as well because... The way Black Culture was in America pro-civil rights was actually really amazing. I look at footage and sound bits from back then and what the black people of America did was just... The craziest dancing, singing, entertainment. They were the FUN and hyper skilled entertainers while the whites seemed really boring in comparison.

Not a fan of excellent character designs being replaced by a worse versions in these Disney remake. Of course it's safe to talk about the cg animals being off in this movie but the actress playing Ariel was a blatant miscast here. Despite being a black guy, I love the animated version of Ariel growing up. Such a bright and colorful character would be difficult to replicate on the big screen. They didn't even try here which lead to all these terrible ideological changes in movie.

The 2015 Cinderella adaptation was fine. It was different enough from the animated one to stand on its own. It didn't do anything crazy. It had a few new songs and paid homage to the old songs. I was a bit annoyed by Helena Bonham Carter's fairy godmother, but otherwise, it was probably the best of the Disney adaptations.

I am a Dane and the original story is very different from Disney’s. However, noone expected Disney to do such a dark tale and I loved their version as much as H. C. Andersen’s fairytale- each in their way. It is not my love for the original story that gets in the way of me liking this new adaptation. I hate that Disney make these live action movies. They are bad in so many ways that I don’t know where to start. I think what is most important: Don’t fix what isn’t broken. Everytime they do these remakes somehow they manage to completly miss the point of the story and sink the classics that still holds up today.

In the original Disney classics, the voice actors/singers are acting during the song. They tap into the emotion and the minds of the characters and the meaning of the lyrics. In the remakes, the actors are just singing a rendition of the song. It's similar to the difference of Simba singing "I just can't wait to be king," versus Elton John singing it. All the remake musical numbers sound like the non-film versions of the songs sung by musical artists... not actors.
It's nice music, but there is no connection to the character and the story. It feels emotionless and stale.

Disney has gone Scorched Earth on almost everything they bought or already owned, and if the financial reports are anything to go by (and they are a fairly reliable barometer for the most part), it seems most people don't want to be talked down to, insulted, brow-beat, and told their always the problem, they don't want somebody's ideology shoved down their throats, and they certainly don't want two dimensional characters who are automatically better than everyone at everything the second they walk into a room simply for checking all the correct political/ideological boxes. Sony's "Spider-Man" MCU movie proved it. Top Gun Maverick proved it. The Super Mario Movie proved it. Even the recent Jurassic Misadventure Movies have proved it. Lots of movies have made lots of money by NOT bending the knee to all this DEI/Identity Politics/Leftist Gender Ideology dribble. People vote with their hard earned money and if your movie fails spectacularly the way this one, most of Pixar's offerings over the last few years have, and you keep putting out the same steaming piles of burning garbage with different titles, and different faces, and they continue to fail, maybe it's time to look in the mirror because clearly, you've lost touch with your cash supply.
