For me, Hero is only exciting gameplay wise. I don't actually care much for the franchise but I can give it a shot. But I don't speak for everyone

If it wasn't for Hero and Dragon Quest existing, the RPG Genre wouldn't be existing. Let's just all be thankful that Dragon Quest exists, and is represented. I know I'm happy.
Though it is the first for console and Japanese rpgs the genre technically already started with Dungeons & Dragons first releasing in the 1970s. Though a pen and paper table top game it invented the genre.
And then the creators of Dragon Quest mentioned taking inspiration from the very early era computer rpgs Ultima and Wizardry iirc
(and I believe both franchises started in 1981, and In 1979 even before Ultima first released the same guy behind Ultima designed and brought out a crpg for Apple II. Which later in 1998 got ported to DOS on the Ultima Collection, called Akalabeth: World of Doom as a hobbyist project.
On Apple II Started as a limited release and it got published in 1980 by the California Pacific Computer Company)
Dragon Quest did however really help popularize the genre for Japanese audiences and is very influential for pretty much every Japanese made rpg that came along after that!
And it’s even influential for other media in Japan with the references to it you might see in Manga and Anime.
And Japan even has some kind of live action fantasy spoof show I think it is with the main character being dressed up like Dragon Quest V’s main character.
I love how much Japan loves this franchise every new Dragon Quest release is almost like a national holiday to them lol

Its much worse when you realize that all these hardcore smash fans somehow missed the fact that it was specifically mentioned that none of the dlc will be echoes. Alts were the only way the dlc packs would have more than one character

Well, it _did_ show Dharkon (who, mind you, had *never* appeared in promo trailers for SSBU, before and after the Hero's trailer), so.... yeah.
Fun fact:
The first six games in the series form two different trilogies; the Erdrick Saga and the Zenithian. DQ 1,2, and 3 are the Erdrick Saga and 4, 5, and 6 are the Zenithian trilogy.
Fun fact #2:
Of all the Heroes in the series, only the first three are actually related. It starts with Erdrick, then goes to the DQ1 Hero (the one wearing the horned helmet in the center) and then the DQ2 Hero (the one wearing the pilot hat with goggles), thus making the chronology of the first three games 3 - 1 - 2.
Final fun fact:
Calling The Luminary "Erdrick" is not wrong. He does, in fact, possess the title of "Erdrick".
Hero: gets announced. Basically everyone when seeing it: who even is this man. Banjo: gets announced. Everyone: SCREAMING AND CRYING IN HAPPINESS. Hero: cries in one of the most fun characters to play

I remember playing the hell out of Dragon Quest 1 through 4 on the NES as a kid (back in the days when it was called "Dragon Warrior" in the US).
I immediately caught the reference in "The Hero draws near!". In the Dragon Quest games, the first line in every battle is "[Enemy name] draws near!" Even just typing that line makes the battle music from the first Dragon Quest play in my head.
Honestly, it's about time a Dragon Quest character made it into Smash. While I personally never thought "gee, when will they add a Dragon Quest character to Smash?", I did think it was a little odd that non-Nintendo characters like Sonic were in the game but not any characters from one of Nintendo's oldest and most popular titles. The first Dragon Quest is the third oldest video game RPG, preceded only by Wizardry and Ultima (not counting text-based games like Adventure or Rogue), and predating Final Fantasy by over a year and a half (Dragon Quest was released on May 27 1986, Dragon Quest 2 on January 26 1987, and Final Fantasy on December 18 1987). And Dragon Quest has always been more popular than Final Fantasy in Japan; May 27 is Dragon Quest Day, to commemorate the release of the original game, and they release new games and DQ-related merchandise on Saturdays because people used to skip school and work to get it (however, it is an urban legend that they were required to do so by law, it was a mutual agreement they came to when Nintendo saw how disruptive it was to release the games on a work day).

Welp found my main, as soon as I get a switch and Smash ultimate.
The only dragon quest i have played is 5. I think it was "Hand of the heavenly bride" or something like that, so while i got hyped for the hero, i reacted more when i saw the Dragon Quest 5 protagonist appear in the final smash.
The only one I played through completely is 9.
