YES YES YES YES!!!! You've absolutely made my day!!!
The Truth imo is Prince's best album of the 90's, and it's a shame it wasn't released on its own as the follow-up to Emancipation. It's release could have warmed critics up to him again before that decades end, as well as redeemed him for overwrought fans at the time. The Truth is always the album I point anyone in the direction of who says Prince's 90's output is overproduced, lacks artistic merit, or isn't as revolutionary as his 80s stuff. I felt this album was finally the artistic and experimental venture I was hoping to see come to fruition since the name-change, and while The Gold Experience was definitely fresh-sounding, and while Emancipation was a reinvigoration of creativity, I still didn't feel like those albums lived up to the name-change the way that The Truth did. Actually, I'm just going to go ahead and deem The Truth as one of Prince's most experimental albums ever, second only to maybe Parade or The Dream Factory. It's too bad we didn't get more acoustic albums from His Purple Highness. The sound is so immaculate, the songs are so deep and so much more personal than a lot of his work had been up to that point (or after), and his prowess on guitar highlighted in the most understated and unique ways.
Favorite songs are: The Truth, Don't Play Me, Third Eye, Fascination, and
Comeback (I've cried to Comeback on more than one occasion). But honestly, I love every single song on that LP. And to this day I kinda wish Prince would have gone further down the road of full-on experimentation for the rest of 90s. Imagine if he would have approached Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic with the same spirit of abandon. Surely it would have benefitted from that mentality as opposed to trying to fit in at TRL.
BTW did you know Circle of Amour is a nod to Joni Mitchell's The Circle Game?
Oh, and Prince screams the "MFs" on the title track, not on Third Eye.
Also, did you know that The Truth is the last album Prince ever used profanity on? (Which might have something to do with why I view it as his last cutting-edge record.)
Anyways, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for getting to this one. More fans need to know abou The Truth, and so does the music world in general. It's truly a gem, and as grand a testament as any to Prince's unparalleled artistry, and a pleasant surprise among an admittedly oversaturated 90s output.

I love this album. I enjoy the acoustics in this album. This album is very telling. Especially one of your tears. Wow. Plus Don't play me. He is phenomenal as always but my tearjerker song has to be Comeback. When I hear it I hear him singing it to Amir. He is wailing. It just breaks my heart for him. Thank you PF for your great reviews. I look forward to them.

Such a special album. It’s has songs that came from his heart strings. Again lessons for life in “The Truth” & “Dont Play Me”! But “Comeback” & “Welcome to the Dawn” is another confirmation of his spiritual knowledge. We are entering The Dawn right now !! Been waiting for this review!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

This was great. It's been forever since you've done a Prince album review! I especially enjoyed that you felt the need to do a demonstration for The Other Side of the Pillow. A couple of minor "corrections" based on my own memory of this period. The first use of "Welcome to the Dawn" on Prince's liner notes was actually on The Beautiful Experience, his first release under his new symbol name. Also, I thought the reason The Truth was added to the Crystal Ball set was because of the distribution issues with people who had preordered Crystal Ball from 1-800 NEW FUNK and were angry about the delays, so he added The Truth to placate the fans. I could be misinformed, but that was the understanding I had at the time. Maybe that's the reason Kama Sutra was added.

"All up in your crevices and whatnot"!!!! LOL!!!! 1994-98 of the symbol years is one of my Prince sweet spots. The Truth is so good--to me, it's one of his most(ly) unskippable-track albums (I usually skip Animal Kingdom). I remember being so thankful when it came out (along with Crystal Ball) because I realized just how generous Prince was with his gifts and how blessed his friends/fans were by those gifts. The Dionne Farris story for Dionne is fantastic! (Kimbra does a lovely cover of that song.) What and who Prince was attracted to never ceases to amaze me. Fascination grew on me after I realized what a terrific song it is to dance to.

I started listening to The Truth two years ago and I immediately was taken by it. It was definitely different from Crystal Ball and his other albums at the time and I loved the acoustic feel to it even though it wasn’t completely acoustic. The Truth was a great opener, the guitar riff was one of a kind, it really made me think a lot. Don’t Play Me is definitely a classic and one I gravitated the most too. Prince definitely bares pieces of himself on this album and it was a shame it didn’t get its own release, ppl tend to forget about it. He sure has a way of really pulling you in and immersing yourself in his voice and shear honesty. Favorite tracks: The Truth, Don’t Play Me, Third Eye, Other Side of the Pillow, Fascination, Comeback, One of Your Tears

Great review, I love when you are just having fun with the reviews. So this wasn't my favorite album and sometimes forget about it as a concept album. HOWEVER, I have always absolutely loved One of Your Tears, Circle of Amour and Dionne (which pairs well with Strolling, if you are into making random playlists), and to a lesser extent Don't Play Me. I know that the man is deep, very deep, but most of the songs just didn't resonate with me as they did on other albums. But it is always great to hear and see other opinions about Prince music. I forget how good this album is, I actually got this album and not Crystal Ball. I really would have liked to see Prince release another acoustic guitar album or an unplugged album. It’s pretty cool that you played that guitar line and the cool thing about the blues is that if you learn the pentatonic scale you can play just that box form and you’ll be really good. If I’m not mistaking welcome to the dawn has another version that hasn’t see the light of day but was supposed to be really good but again I have never heard the other version. I don’t know if you’ve seen prince play other side of the pillow live but there’s a jazz version out there and it sounds awesome; if I’m not mistaken he played it on the musicology tour.

Great review, have to say there are are only a few songs I like, but can understand why he did it - it was not to jump on the Unplugged bandwagon - but a form of outrage, a lot of it came from his anger with Amiirs death and his problems becoming free. Most of the songs are fairly angry (The Truth, Don't play me, one of your tears etc) and these are the best. Even weirder was it was recorded when he was playing happy families and being Mr Family man on Oprah and promoting Emancipation - must have been hard for him and the album is exciting there as its real Prince in late 1996 rather than the fantasy of I love Mayte and Emancpation - their relationship already started falling apart then.

I hit "like" before the video was even over. 👍 💜L O V E💜 this album! Prince is a delight to listen to, especially when he leads his listeners into deeper waters, both in sound & thought. I agree; It was very clever to package The Truth with Crystal Ball. It's as if he said, "Here u go, friends: Guitars & drums & sex & Love- enjoy.... & u should also listen to THIS. I need to educate u." 🎶📖
I enjoy the layers & levels of this album, sometimes light-hearted (but always enLightening), & sometimes into the deep, deep, deep, Olympic-level high dive not-for-the-kiddies pool. He's a genius with lyrics & I still hear a little something new every time I listen to it.
Comeback gets me in the feels EVERY time! 😢 As a vegetarian, I do have a special appreciation for Animal Kingdom. 🤗🐬 But my favorite track on the album is definitely Welcome 2 The Dawn. His voice, the composition, what he's talking about- I Love everything about it. 💜

Funny you weren't a fan of Fascination. It's one of my all time favorite Prince songs. but that's probably uncommon too. The songs busy-ness makes it so great for me. I'm a fan who's prefers his more upbeat music to his ballads though I love both. However Fascination just feels like ecstasy induced trip. I think in an interview Prince even once referenced Mozart 's common criticism of "too many notes." The fullness in this song was impressive I thought. The lyrics too are poignant. It feels like it's about the feeling of being intoxicated and aware, but can't help it and perhaps wishing to be in more control. Addiction whether to a substance or a person. On an album called "the truth" I think it really fits. Addiction is so often kept secret behind what appears to be a normal life or normal display of truth searching, but the truth includes the good and the bad and when the bad is admitted it sticks out, but that's how it should be. He knew and I love that he did!

I really like this album but Circle of Amour after Don't Play Me makes no sense lol. Prince's guitar playing on Fascination is RIDICULOUS. I also love how unorthodox the arrangements are... it's such a unique album.

I love 'The Truth', it sounded, and still does sound, very smooth, very cool. I have listened to it more than the other Crystal Ball CD's I bought when it came out. Had to order Crystal Ball specially, cost quite a lot more than a normal CD(s) album. Didn't get Karma Sutra with it, disappointingly.

That’s it, rub it in that you can get to Princevault.com, “I got all this information from PV”, but I can’t on any of my home electronics. However, I can at work. Urg!
I can’t wait to see/hear your next “word play” on 3rdEye.
I have always felt like “The Truth” was a transitional album for Prince; professional, personally and musically.

Took some work for me to get into emancipation. I’d start with “in this bed eye scream,” “my computer,” and “slave.” Those are crucial prince tracks for me. A lot of the album I tolerate, but some I really like. Plus, “my computer” has Kate Bush I’m backing vocals. Can’t go wrong with that.

2nd cd of Emancipation was great and could have been it's own album. The 1st cd was good (love Big White Mansion and In this Bed...). The 3rd cd however only had a couple of songs (My Computer and The Love We Make) that stood out.

Have Mercy! I did NOT know about ANY interactions between Prince and Dionne Farris! Epiphany in that I've always had a crush on Dionne Farris! This cements the fact that Prince and I have the SAME taste in women!!!! I thought I was the only one who thought Dionne Farriss is hot in many ways!!! I felt this album was a catharsis for Prince...Feel like he was letting out some frustrations. Really didn't know about the whole Dionne Farris thing, though! Surprised Dionne didn't reciprocate! I always interpreted "Don't Play Me" as a double-entre'. I feel he means don't try to take advantage of him or exploit him as much as he meant "Don't Play Me" as far as playing his music for the reasons he sings in the song. I always saw "Circle of Amour" about young girls and sexuality. I wonder if the song had some truth to in in that he mentions a school he attended? Definitely inspired by Joni Mitchell..both in lyrics, bust the music. Prince's Friend, I'm kind of an amateur musical hobbyist....To give a suggestion; for you I recommend starting off with Piano. Some people are better off this way. If it means anything, Prince started off this way as well (Piano first.)
