My mom knew her grandfather. He was born in 1854 in NC. She said when he and his parents became free in 1863 they had stay on the former owner's plantation for a number of years to work and save because they had no savings.

He also has some purchases recorded in a book from the store owned by the same plantation owner. I now wonder if he was a sharecropper. He purchased land in Virginia in the early 1900s.

One of my most wtf interactions happened in my Freshman year of college in one of my Ethics class. My teacher (yes, she was white) hit me with this: "This may be surprising," she says in a soft and quiet voice while proceeding to make sympathetic prolonged eye contact with me, "but people weren't really nice to people of color 50 years ago." The me I was then, just gave a small smile and said "uh huh," when it was clear she expected me to say something. I did make eye contact with the only other black kid in the room and we both had wtf expressions and shared a small laugh.
