In the clinch, I think Jack might actually have the strength advantage. I honestly think he’d manhandle Carnera the same way Joe did if not worse. Joe was the better fighter by far though. Louis was more stationary as a boxer puncher, and while also skilled in slips and such, was much slower on his feet, and hardly used any weaving or head movement. Also Joe was Kayod twice, Jack was tecunically never knocked out (his one stoppage was the result of a towel being thrown in by his brother Bernie in his fight against Jim Flynn. In the rematch, Jack knocked Flynn out in less than forty seconds of the first round. Thus, Chin, Defense and Power really go to Dempsey. Both are even in stamina as well as speed as Joe had faster hands while Jack faster feet.
I would agree Joe is a more complete fighter but Styles make fights and he would struggle a great deal to Dempsey. One of Joe Louis's losses was to Max Schmeling whose strongest points where mostly things that Dempsey is even better at.

Joe was NOT the same man when he was forced out of retirement (58 to 1 record...!) and all he had left of his old arsenal was his powerful jab. Joe was being hounded for money he didn't have nor should have had to have paid, if they simply took the taxes out of the donations that he gave for the WW2 war effort. So the government CHOSE to do to him what they did...and he most certainly didn't deserve to be mistreated so. Due to all this stress...Joe turned to escapism (drugs) and this lifestyle destroyed his abilities and aged him early...plus, gave him a heart condition. Prime Joe Louis, however...would have destroyed Rocky. Still, he won 8 out of 10 fights and ended his career with a 68 to 3 record...which is still incredible.
