Gem and V, welcome to NY! I’m a fan of your channel. Forbidden Planet NYC is THE local comic shop for all the five boroughs in NYC. I love them. Midtown Comics is like the TRU of comic shops in the city. I’m glad you guys enjoyed the CON and your stay in our city. Maybe next year if you come back I’ll check you out in the Con.
That was the store back in the day. The real spot was their old location on the corner of 12th & Broadway. It had beautiful old school display windows and high ceilings. It had a cool downtown kinda hipster vibe years ahead of it's time. I remember they had dope t-shirts too. Lol. Great video.
I've been going to FPNYC since 1986 when they were located across the street on 821 Broadway. Went there last Saturday and picked up comic supplies like comic bags and backing boards. You in my HOOD KEEP IT MINTY.
I really prefer what you did in this video with the voice over on top of the subtle music. I honestly think it’s better than just the music playing like usual LCS vids
Good tour. They still have a great selection. But the store is a lot smaller than the glory days back in the 80s and 90s. But NY real estate is expensive. But you did not point old register area is gaming supplies -Magic cards,, card sleeves, game die. And on the opposite side are the art books, not just regular graphic novels. There is also a small section of discounted books; sometime you can find some cool gems. But I've never understood the back issue section since they relocated to the current location.
Looks awesome, great video. I'm planning on visiting my Sister in Canada next year and going to the shops because here in Croatia we don't have that many comic book shops unfortunately
There is a place in BK called Bullet proof comics... talk about rare CGC 9.4 or better books Hulk 181 x-Men giant sized 1 etc...its all on the top level and they have the most keys I’ve ever seen in one shop High quality stuff
Great video. I love these LCS spotlight video's. Definitely want to visit and check out all of those badass t shirts. I am jealous of Phies wolverine shirt.
it makes perfect sense that these shops were be going more towards trades and less about floppies and back issues. Its what most people buy now. I think back in the day what put me off about buying single issues was a 3 page spread ad for a Pontiac Solstice. An ad for a car in a god damn comic book.
Oh yeah! That was my spot in NYC in 2003-2004 when I was a weekly comic buyer, that place did new comic book tuesdays ;) think that was on the DL though, but a saver is a Pre-Order and NYState laws do or did allow you to sell any product you have a pre-order for, once the product is in stock. Video Games NY sold GTAIV a week or two early, and Rockstar HQ in nyc was just down the street, some Rockstar employee was super confused and watched us all buy their game early and cops were just like, "this is legal in NY dude"; Video Games NY owner kept citing a NY Supreme Court decision too, their close to Forbidden Planet too, like 7th st between 3rd and 2nd ave
I used to shop there back in the early 2000's, for some action figures such as Tortured Souls and Hell Raiser figures as collectibles. That particular store in that location isn't where Forbidden Planet originally was it used to be a couple of blocks up on the same street on a corner with a pillar outside of the entrance with some steps I remember the place being kind of narrow not as big as the new location but I remember it being so busy there you couldn't walk where you want to browse to to look for stuff because of the display cases were in the center of the store. At that time it was cool too shop there I met Bill Murray, who stopped by with his family and I remember an actor from the '79 movie The Warriors, who was the gang leader of the Rogues, funny though at that time when you walked in that place when you enter the comic shop there was a huge Warriors, poster right above you which was cool. Lots of memories of being there. I also saw Ron Pearlman, walking by me talking to someone on his cell phone I did a double take when I saw him and he was across the street from Forbiden Planet. Just like saw Willem Dafoe, walking by me with a woman while he was also on his cell phone on Houston St. near Broadway. Lawrence Fishburne, I've met and shook hands with and talked to him on Madision Ave. and 40th st where he was about to ride his motorcycle which later made sense due to his role in the movie Biker Boyz, which later was released a year later this was back in 2002 when I met him which the movie came out in 2003. I even saw the actor who played the Kingpin, in the Netflix series The Punisher, in an office building where I used to work at on 40th. and Park Ave. I guess he was shooting an episode of Law and Order at the time. And I've even saw Star Jones. And that was in the early-late 2000's, and that was just a few celebrities I saw in person in the city. Bill Clinton, I saw also with crowds hovering over him taking pictures and shaking hands while security surrounding him near NYU. Forbidden Planet, is a cool place to go to shop at.
@@JavierRodriguez-mu8mh Oh well look at that last time I was there was in 2013 I guess I didn't see the poster at the time due to the new location and the new look of the place.
Rick, Gem and I lived in South Florida all our lives. We lived by the BOYNTON shop in Palm Beach but visited Ft Laud Tate’s often. Our kids hated the drive but loved the shop 💕
Man great video as always bub and I feel ya on not able to cop shirts because of no 3 x I had to lose 60 lbs to rock them 2xl my dammy but that was the spot right on
Really interesting to see this tour. I've occasionally bought from Forbidden Planet online for years - most recently their Blade Runner 2019 variants. But it's interesting to see that they are less of a traditional comic store and from the looks of it, more of a Hot Topic for comic and animation IP's.
You can call this Gembo’s Ultimate Heaven, plus when you passed the manga section, I spot a copy of Devilman Classic Collection volume 1! You should read it sometime; Gembo!
Get yourself down to London! Check out Forbidden Planet in London is huuugggee! Never miss a video man keep it up bro, big fan all the way from Lincoln, England
Great video. I love this kind of stuff. It's very soothing to me and I'll pause it when I see something of interest and there's always something interesting in a comix store. I didn't realize there was a 30th Anniversary edition of Silver Surfer - Parable, I looked it up and saw it came out just last year. Very cool.
Dead End Kids was a wonderful mini series. They were selling like hot cakes before release, but writer Frank Gogol is super involved on Instagram and hooked me up.
I just visited the one in London (dont know if they're related) and I spent an hour in there and could have spent another hour in there. There were 2 massive floors and even a book signing going on while I was there. Love these giant stores!
Hey GMC, that was a cool walkthrough of Forbidden Planet and it looks like they have some great merchandise to get a hold of especially around New York Comic Con. It looks like you and Phie got some cool stuff and hopefully you guys get back to Forbidden Planet next year for an even bigger haul.
I've been going to Forbidden Planet since they used to sell the Naruto DVDs, they were a few blocks from 14st union square. FP still pretty close from its original location few blocks from what I recall.
Those shirts are from future past they had a show at metropolis clothing store last week vintage shirt i talked to the guy He was trying them at forbidden planet to see how they would do
Not sure if you've ever mentioned it, are you into or tried getting familiar with any anime? You might be picking it up already but if not check out Once and Future by Kieron Gillen. Great upload as always!
I've been living in ny my whole life always some happening but how'd u like it? And next time come to the Bronx it's not as fucked up as ppl say and we have some valid comic book shops btw Manhattan over prices everything 😭💯
Still like the store but they never were the same after they moved from 12th st years ago it's nice they've had 3 locations on the same block but now it just a good store before it was an experience.
Thanks. I need to get one of those stabilizers. One more question. What editing software did you use to upload the video? I have an iPhone but when I use iMovie to upload on CZcams the quality is fuzzy and not high definition.
I'm a bigger book collector coming in here would have been a waste of time for me..nice store don't get me wrong..just not a big enough back issue area
Was thinking the same thing. On the other hand where would someone in New York have space for back issues? I mean, living apartments is extremely small..
It’s a retail thing in ny a lot of stores would love to have back issues unfortunately they take up a lot of space and end up not being profitable in the long run. A couple of years ago they had a basement sale they had tons of back issues and I asked why don’t they bring them up. It’s just not cost affective it’s so hard to make money in the city you have to diversify and give space to what makes the most cash
DAMN, HOW IT HAS CHANGED. WE USED TO GO HANG OUT THERE EVERY DAY. WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. COOL VID.💎👊🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I went there this summer and bought comic books!
Like if you agree that it is such a cool store. You are amazing Gem!

Cool store. Thanks, Gem Mint.

look like a cool shop i have ordered from them online once before thanks for sharing
It’s been years since I have gone, but I remember a downstairs section full of cool stuff too.
Damn that store looks amazing!
I live a few blocks away! One of NYC's og comic shops. Awesome to see you throw them some love man!
That store looks amazing! Very cool to see what purchases you made too.
I feel ya pain when it comes to shirt size. I'm a 3xl myself. When I see 2xl shirts, I always think to myself.... I gotta drop some lb's. 😂😂😂😂
lol
Thanks for this. I used to go to the old location back in the late 80s/early 90s.
I’ll need to check out Forbidden Planet next time I’m up in NY. Didn’t know about it.

Looks very similar to the forbidden planet stores in the UK, they don’t have any back issues in those stores either
they used to be affiliated, not since the 90's
