  • "Why is Gaza exceptional?" asks Scottish-Palestinian Dundee City councillor Nadia el-Nakla, who’s married to Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf.
In this Real Talk interview, we sat down with el-Nakla in Edinburgh for a personal conversation on the fear and desperation her parents experienced while being trapped in #Gaza under Israeli bombardment.
She speaks on why an immediate ceasefire is needed to alleviate “the hopeless situation” in the besieged enclave, and also shares her childhood memories of Gaza.
We filmed this episode a day before el-Nakla’s parents were allowed to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing.
#RealTalk is a Middle East Eye interview show hosted by Mohamed Hashem that delves into the stories and experiences of a diverse range of guests.

I would be concerned if I was Scottish because what you have is a PM who used his position to promote the interest of his family more than the interest of the nation he was sworn to represent.

Being Jewish means attaining the sensation of two contrasting forces in nature, the egoistic force, which is our human nature, and its opposite altruistic force, which is the force of nature itself.
The attainment of these two forces define the people who, first under Abraham, developed this sensation of reality. They became known as the people of Israel, and later, as the Jews.
At a certain point, around 2.000 years ago, we lost the sensation of the two forces and lived solely in the egoistic force. That is the meaning of being in exile.
Exile has no geographic connotations, i.e. that we left some geographic Land of Israel and now we return to it. It is rather a matter of an inner exile, that we do not host the sensation of the altruistic nature, i.e. the quality of love, bestowal and connection, between us. When we fell from this sensation, we then entered our period of exile and ceased to exist as the people of Israel.

Jews covenant with God from 3,000 years ago was to live peacefully among every and any tribe they were born into. And never to egotistically ,,demand,, a State of their own. He says with the establishment of Israel. that Covenant was broken. And God ,,will bring down his wrath on the people of Israel,, .

    Please examine the following scenario:
The Russians invaded and subsequently occupied Ukraine. In retaliation a group of Ukraine soldiers infiltrated into Moscow killing thousands of children, women and the elderly. The Russians then reciprocated with the massacre of children, women, the elderly and the flattening of hospitals, schools and other civilian amenities in the capital Kyiv.
Can the Russians, being the OCCUPIER, justify the massacre of the Ukrainians as acts of SELF-DEFENSE?
What is currently happening in Palestine is the CULMINATION of decades of Israeli colonial TRANSGRESSION and ATROCITIES in the Palestinian homeland. For a better understanding of the issue, a history of the creation of the state of Israel is essential.
Following the publication of a pamphlet “Der Judenstaat” (The Jewish State) by Theodor Herzl in 1896, the first wave of Jewish immigration to Palestine, mostly immigrants from Europe began, with the complicity of the British and other European colonial powers.
When you OCCUPY a land that has been inhabited for centuries, then PERSISTENTLY subjugate, harass, discriminate and dispossess the local population by seizing MORE land, it is inevitable that a protracted series of VIOLENT UPRISINGS would ensue.
The children of Gaza have endured intense Israeli barbarism all of their young lives, particularly since 2007 when the Israeli blockade and siege began in earnest. Severely traumatized in their young formative years, many, if not most, have been EMOTIONALLY DAMAGED. Gaza's young adults of today all share this childhood and bear the same EMOTIONAL SCARS. So how do you think such individuals are going to behave, if they manage to break free and attack their oppressors? How are they going to behave when they encounter the very people who are enjoying privileges gained through their own confinement and slow eradication?
Whilst one may ask what was their rationale, their motivation, one must factor in the ANGER and RAGE for the violent acting out of traumatized and emotionally damaged individuals.
How could you expect an impoverished child growing up in a hostile living environment lacking in safe drinking water, nutritious food, electricity, basic educational and medical facilities to develop into a mentally, socially and physically healthy adult?
You cannot keep treating people like ANIMALS and not expect them to act like one !!!
How can you bestow upon Israel the right of self-defense when it is the OCCUPIER of the Palestinian homeland, committing abuse of human rights, among others, by imprisoning underaged children and desecrating the Al Aqsa mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem?
Kindly ponder on the statement by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres that the October 7th Hamas attack DID NOT HAPPEN IN A VACUUM.
