Had one since I was a kid. That one got used till it fell to pieces. The blades are fantastic, easy to keep razor sharp and I like the scimitar shape. Good backspring and the handles aren't as uncomfortable to use as you'd think. Most of all, they have bags of character and history.

This is definetly not a cheap knife, it's inexpensive. Important difference. And it's one of the most underrated ones

@Jay M just in German. Cheap could mean inexpensive, but also gimcrack or shabby

@Jay M well not necessarily different meanings but we associate cheap with low cost poor quality. As to inexpensive it’s thought of as, not the best of the best but it’s well made and isn’t very costly.

Had mine for about 8 years now, I take it everywhere and use it for anything. Great knife always sharp, light and comfortable to use. Only problem I’ve had was the etching coming off after a while.

The Douk-Douk was never officially used by the French Foreign Legion, but it is possible some members might have found a Douk-Douk somewhere & slipped it in their pocket. The use by the Foreign Legion of the Douk-Douk is a popular myth.
But the knife was popular in the French African colonies by the locals...the knife being cheap, readily available, and capable of a very sharp edge. It was used for shaving, and as an assassination weapon, sometimes the handle sides were hammered shut with the blade open, making a very effective fixed blade weapon ( which was illegal for the African peoples to carry). This modified Douk-Douk was used in those assassinations.
A very interesting history, even without the fictional French Foreign Legion connection.
And, capable of taking a wicked sharp edge on the thin, flat ground carbon steel blade.
(The Douk-Douk was a fictional "scary" creature, as depicted on the handle)
Edit:- The French presence in Africa was and is a stain on the history of France and it's treatment of the people in the colonies. Some of this mistreatment goes on to this day in taxes collected from these former colonies for the "privilege " of being "freed" from France.

I wouldn’t call them inexpensive, considering the simple components, especially when you compare what you get for the same money when buying a Swiss Army knife; then when you factor in the lack of finishing, it gets worse, I have the large and small, on both, I had to file down the spine to get it smooth, it was rough as a three day stubble!
Having said that, I do love them and the fact that I had to finish it off myself actually made it more personal, it added sentimental value to it. I had to do the same to my Japanese Nagao Higonokami, a similar knife in terms of the folded sheet metal handle, although the Nagao Higonokami is hand forged from a harder steel sandwiched between softer steel. I love that knife as much, for its simplicity and history. Both are well capable of holding a super sharp edge, although I think the Douk Douk beats the Nagao Higonokami because of its super slim profile although they are a similar thickness (the Nagao Higonokami has a sort of Scandi grind with a second bevel).
