I've always been envious of the low car prices in UK, but now seeing how expensive it is to insure one, I think I'm fine.

It goes down very quickly, once you are 25 and you have been driving for a few years you'll be paying about £400-£500 for a year.
The UK has a problem with teenager wankers racing and crashing, which is why all the insurers try to force you to have a blackbox.

@@louiehorwood660 Incorrect. I live here. If you crash, injury is covered by ACC. If the other person is insured, their insurance will fix their car and will chase you as a civil issue. If you don't pay, you'll get made bankrupt, that's it. No prison.

@Over The Edge I paid $750 for fully comprehensive insurance on my RS3. In the UK, with my old postcode (I'm originally from there) it was just over 1k GBP. Also, thanks to GST (VAT in the UK) being 15%, my RS3 was considerably cheaper than if I'd bought it in the UK, so no madness here.

This really brings attention to something I've been banging on about for years.
Firstly, you can pass your driving test in the UK at 17. I'm guessing you considered this already, but chose 21 because insurance would literally be impossible at 17. I'm 27 now but I remember having quotes over £20,000 for cars worth less than £1,000 when I was 17. No word of a lie. In the end I gave up and bought a 125cc motorbike because it was cheaper to insure. (£1,200 to insure a £1,750 bike).
So, even at 21 - this is the situation you were faced with. You had to buy a TERRIBLE car. You had to pay almost THREE times the value of the car for insurance. (Which may have been third party only?)
Then there is the issue with post codes. What post code was this insured at? I grew up in a poor area and my insurance was INSANE. I'd regularly post on forums back in 2009/2010 about my frustrations and people all over the UK simply couldn't understand it. They couldn't relate to the post code lottery I had been trapped in.
Then there is the issue with black boxes. We have reached a point where people think it is acceptable to have GPS trackers inside our cars, just so insurance can be a little bit cheaper. That is absolutely insane.
What about transparency? Insurance is a LEGAL requirement, and so there are two ways we can address this. Option one is that insurance companies become 100% transparent, and share the details of their algorithms. If my insurance is 12% more than my friends who lives next door, I want to know exactly what are the risk factors that bring that 12% increase. How recent is the data? Where is the data collected from? Like a credit score; if you're going to judge me - You need to inform me on the things I can improve. Option two is similar to the system in some Australian states, whereby the minimum car insurance is included in the car's annual tag/tax/registration. That way everybody pays a fair base-line. If you want BETTER insurance, then it is your choice to pay for it.
Meanwhile in Australia you've got 18yo kids cruising in ute's, in America kids turning up to high school in mustangs...and here we are in the UK being shafted completely.
A product or service that is a legal requirement should NEVER be privatised for profit.
Now my rant is over - we should also inform the Americans and Australians that our petrol is 60% more expensive than theirs!

Reason for high prices are claims and scams. If you think its easy profit, make yourself an insurance company and undercut the 4k quotes for guys your age down to 3k. See if you can make a profit from that.
Like it or not, ultimately the reason for high insurance costs is high claim costs. In the UK for example (where this video is based) a few years ago, over 50% of small car accidents put through a whiplash claim, something that in some countries happens/gets claimed in much less than 1% of accidents.
Stop making silly whiplash claims (and others) and soon insurance costs will go down.

Sorry to say but the insurance will be a LOT more than what they were getting. You will have to have a black box but speaking from experience get more miles than you'll need from the start otherwise you'll pay like £500 to top up with 1500 miles. If you can avoid a black box I would say it's worth spending an extra £750 for insurance without a black box. I had the worst experience with a black box. Even if you have to overtake someone and slightly go over the speed limit you'll get a warning for it. You have about 3 or 4 warnings.

I know this is two years old.... I am aware. However, now 5+ years in to finishing my SW20 MR2, "barely rolling shell" factory turbo with all suspension bolts just "slotted in" i.e smaller thread bolts just making it "pushable"
The car is ALMOST there, never had the engine turn over yet, not even once...
Still need to get a computer for it then should be on the road!????
FYI, MR2's + no lift/hoist makes life a nightmare 😅 Channels awesome, love your content, keep up the awesome work

My first car was a Ford Escort Mk1, second one Mk2, and so on and so on..
they were cheap parts, easy to work on, but hard to push up a hill!

Yes! Love the 106, was my first car too!
    I had the Zest model...
Hit a post side on in it, but carried on driving it for a while even though it crabbed down the road!
Was a lot of fun 👌

I love these budget videos! Next time EACH of you should take 1000£ and buy a car. Then meet up and compare the cars like they did on the mid-2000 Top Gear. :)

I had the fiat coupe in this video. i traded it in at the garage for next to nothing bcs i slid it into a curb and bent the subframe. would love to see what the description said about the car as it was basically on its last legs.....broke down reliably every 3 months but loved the car was amazing to drive

i moved to finland from england and was shocked by how cheap insurance here is. yes, car theoretically are a bit more expensive, depending on what you go for, but the car i bought was cheaper here than england funnily enough, and insurance a quarter of the price id pay in england
