- ( www.TFLcar.com ) On 5.31.2013 Tim Samaras, his son Paul and their colleague Carl Young were killed while tracking an F-3 Tornado in Oklahoma. Back in 2010 we had the honor of meeting and interviewing Tim Samaras about his job and the vehicle he uses to chase tornadoes. We publish that video in 2010 with some terrible music in the background. Today, in memory of Twistex Tim Samaras, we're publishing the entire interview mostly unedited. Tim's colleagues say the three men passed away doing what they loved. We think this video shows the passion, science and the professionalism that Tim applied to his job. R.I.P.

Stumbled across this today, the anniversary of his passing...He was a brilliant man. RIP Tim, Paul, & Carl 🙏🏻
Its hard to believe people are calling this man stupid and dumb; he collected data so that earlier direction can become more common. He did the job people were way to scared to even try once let alone a career. RIP
That is so sad. He was truly a genius. We lost a great team. They have saves so many lives with their early warning research. They gave their lives trying to help others. May they rest in peace.
It's a cruel irony that he was one of the most careful and knowledgeable chasers around and died in such a way.
well chasing a 2 mile wedge with winds almost in the 300s in a chevy cobalt would kill anyway and intercepting in a chevy cobalt is prolly one of the dumbest and reckless things you can do im sure Tim is very pissed at himself for letting his guard down.
I cried so hard when I heard the news about these guys. I loved them so much. They did a great job on life and I hope thy have a peaceful life in heaven
4:15 This line of thinking, that the biggest tornadoes only go in straight lines, is what got him in the end.
Yeah and as much respect I have for him, I disagreed with that statement 💯% because a big tornado can be just as unstable as a small one at times as it don't much at all for one to change direction and that's what happened with the one that they were killed in.
Well spoken guy... His work is appreciated too many... RIP man...
RIP Tim Samaras one of the most important Tornado chaser and researcher. Your work will never been forgotten.
I hope Tim's passing sends a message to all of the amateur chasers who go after these things with no other purpose than a thrill and a cool piece of video footage that tornadoes aren't to be fucked with. These guys were trained professionals who knew what they were dealing with and a twist of fate turned nature on them and cost them their lives. Its a risk these people take, so the rest of us can stay in shelter and have better lead time in getting there.
RIP Tim, Paul & Carl.
Oh, I loved this guy, he put his life on the line to protect tornado victims and get info, he TRULY had the bravery and balls of steel that none of us could even verge upon. I will always remember him for his awesome show Storm Chasers, You'll be missed.
Watching this in 2019. RIP Team Twistex.
Almost 7 years since their deaths
I was so upset when I heard of these guys passing away. They got taken doing what they loved most, chasing tornados! R.I.P. Team Twistex, we'll never forget you!
Sad news indeed as a fellow storm chaser. I was surprised to see this clip today as I watch your videos often as an automotive enthusiast. As a career meteorologist/atmospheric scientist and occasional storm chaser, it was such a sad day losing such a dedicated researcher/engineer. At least he was doing what he loved!
You guys really screwed up, he died 5/31/2013 and it wasn't an EF3 it was an EF5, and it was the largest, unpredictable tornado ever recorded RIP Tim, Paul and Carl 💜
It actually was an EF3. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_El_Reno_tornado
Chrnan6710 yeah I know that now but to start with they said it was an EF5, they changed it because there was very little damage, personally I think they should have left it as a EF5 because it was 2.6 miles wide, with winds at 296mph, that was a huge tornado
the tornado was a EF5 those are long lasting tornadoes they can say on the ground for a long time
It was downgraded to an EF3 because it hit a unpopulated area, so there wasn't that much damage, this tornado done 3 things at one time and caught a lot of chasers off guard, and no tornadoes usually aren't on the ground long, one this size don't normally change directions but it did, and it wasn't the tornado itself that hit Tim Samaras car it was one of the vortices coming from the tornado, you need to watch Inside The Mega Tornado video if it's still up, it has chasers that were also hit that day in it talking about it, and Dangerous Day Ahead is a Discovery Channel documentary about it
***** yes it was an EF5 and even though the destruction wasn't up to EF5 standards, it was still the largest, fastest most unpredictable tornado ever, and no there will never be another like Tim Samaras, but you're wrong about him trying to get ahead of the tornado to put down probes because he saw it change course and was trying to escape, Dan Robinson was in front of him, his back dash cam caught what happened, you need to watch his video of how fast that tornado changed directions and grew in size and gained speed, all at the same time, Tim Samaras was recording footage but the person who has it said it would never be seen, he said you could hear in their voices that they knew they were in trouble
It is now upgraded to an EF-5, 2.6 miles wide, with wind speeds over 300mph.
We can clearly hear passion in his voice.
Rest in peace, Tim, Paul and Carl. These men were heroes. No one will ever know how many lives they saved with their spotting.
RIP Tim, Paul, and Carl, you will sadly be missed.
He was very brave, courageous and committed to his profession it may have cost him his life but I bet u that he enjoyed every minute of his career. He will be missed. Rip
Yes, we got it wrong. Sorry about that. It can't be changed easily. We think the video is never-the-less a fitting tribute to a man and his bravery and his passion for knowledge.
I'm a storm chaser and I love your channel for car and truck news and I'm glad you were one of the lucky ones that got to meet him before he dies
Notice the white Cobalt in the background. It's creepy and sad seeing it now after the fact :(
Hey lets get it right about Tim ! First of all that was the largest tornado ever recorded! That took more courage ,to go find out the science of that beast, just to help mankind, than any man on this planet could ever have! Tim was one of the smartest and bravest men that u can find! Now that that's said also know that the "ef3 , not f3, tornado that u say struck him was technically more like between an ef4 & ef5 . Just because the measurements of debris moved around on the surface of land in elreno are limited doesn't mean that there weren't wind speeds between 200 & 300 mph. Which is more likely what hit Tim's convoy! Let's give him the respect he deserves . That tornado was a damn MONSTER! Tim Samaras and his son Paul and Carl Young are heroes!!! God bless them !
Thought Tim was an awesome knowledgable man when it came to tornadoes! So sad to hear of his, his son and Carl's passing! But what a way to go! Loving what you do! R.I.P.
Very sad. RIP
I saw news footage of the car. Those fellows never had a chance. My condolences to their families.
4:22 he speaks of what more than likely cost him his life. Romanmicagearguy, thank you for sharing this insightful video of a truly admired, respected father, husband, and scientist. RIP Tim, Paul, & Carl and thank you for what you did to help save the lives of your fellow human beings.
rip tim paul carl, amazing how much data he's collected and helped save lives.
Honestly, that little White Car in the back drop is haunting. What a Great presence Tim Samaras was as a Father and Chasing the Storm.
Not to mention the fact that most tornados unless spotted on the ground and called in, will not just magically set of a tornado warning siren.
Half of the towns Tim / Reed / TIV / Vortex came up on, had a tornado barreling down on them and hadn't even turned on the sirens until one of them radioed it in.
If it wasn't for on the ground spotters, there would be a lot more damage and a lot more deaths.
Rest in Peace Tim, Paul and Carl who died doing what you loved, chasing tornadoes in Oklahoma.
Wow so sad, He died doing what he loved. Thanks for posting my heart and prayers go out to his family
I dont know why God takes the heroes and leaves the elbeghasts of this world?. This man and his son got off their comfy life and wanted to seek knowledge for improving others life. Respect to you and your son and others like you. My sincere condolences to the family and my they R.I.P.
Everyone blames God. If we put ourselves in danger, its our decision. Yes these guys did a great job in what they did, but they knew each time they went out , they were putting their lives in great danger. Stop blaming God.
Rest in peace Tim, Paul an Carl.
RIP, Condolences to the Samaras and Young Families
OH what a SHAME! He was always so careful to get in, drop his load and get out. He seemed like a pretty decent guy on "Storm Chasers". RIP guys.... You guys making comments about these people putting themselves in harms way don't understand WHY they're doing it. Tim wasn't out for the adrenaline rush. He was out there for science!!! He was trying to understand tornados and trying to make it possible to predict them before they occur. Have a little compassion!
THANK YOU TIM RIP FROM ALL STORM CHASERS AUDIENCE OR FUTURE WEATHERMEN.
This is like twister in real life. R.I.P. Tim, Paul, and Carl
R.I.P Team Twistex and Tim,you were my rolemodel for years and you will be my rolemodel always..
I seen tim on storm chasers back in 2009-2011 and he knew way more about tornadoes way more than everybody else,i wish i got to meet him but no,the EF-5 tornado in el reno took that away from me,rip team twistex
Why would someone comment that these men made a mistake. The only thing someone no matter who they are can do is try to SURVIVE. There is no step by step instructions on how to stay alive doing their work. They can guess as best as they can even with all their knowledge they know they are risking their lives to get this weather information to help other people survive. These are amazing men God give them rest. My prayers go out to their families and friends. Thank you Tim,Paul and Carl for putting yourself in harms way to help others survive this devastation a Tornado can bring no matter the f by the number Tornadoes bring destruction period.
Dear Tim. RIP Tim, Paul and Carl. I am from Croatia, but a constant follower on the Alley. I hope Tims work will help many people.
Rest in Peace Tim...
RIP - Condolences to family and friends.
RIP to him and his crew been watching weather since I was 6 back in 1996 after watching hurricane opal still watch the weather channel and these shows they did a lot god bless his family
I watched the Storm Chasers show when it was on the Discovery Channel. Tim was very focused on getting scientific information. R.I.P
FYI the date is wrong should be 5.31.13
Nice job Roman thank you a lot! This will be shared to all my friends!! RIP you will be remembered!
Thanks for the video! It was so awesome to hear Tim's voice!
well said
Such a great man a great researcher that did his job to save people. To improve warning for places which are struck by tornadoes every year. I know not everyone would risk their lives like this for others.
Thank you for posting.
What they do saves lives...the data they collect helps improve warning times for people like you and me.
You ppl that are spewing ignorance... You clearly have NO idea how the work of folks like these are producing research that are SAVING LIVES. We would not have the info available to us now if it weren't for these brave men.
"i don't care what vehicle you have, you're toast"....prophetic words in hindsight...
TO NOTE to the publisher of this video, the tornado that killed samaras has now been upgraded to an EF5 with winds near 300mph and a record width of 2.6 miles which beats the previous 2.5 mile record.
No matter what mistake these guys made, I still respect what they were doing. Hindsight is always 20/20.
Pain to see people who dedicated there lives to help killed. Rip
i'll bet there were a lot of people at his funeral, he was very well respected, great man, did you also go to his son's service..you must be a friend or colleague..
in the desc. it says 6.31.2013, today is only 6.2.2013
His car got rolled and thrown over a quarter mile. A roll cage and helmet aren't going to prevent a person's death in such a case. Yes, having a million dollar chase vehicle will help if you get caught in a lesser tornado but if you get a direct hit from an EF5 there is no vehicle on earth that will save you. My guess is that its actually considerably more dangerous to storm chase in a vehicle like TIV because they intentionally try to intercept tornadoes rather than just get close in them.
I didn't recognize the name, but hearing he was from Twistex I know exactly who he was. This is so sad, very nice guy.
how ironic that what he says about the strong violent large tornados going in a straight line so much that "you could put a ruler on it" turned out to be false, in so much as that belief , turned on him, the tornado that got him ,a violent f-5, the largest In width of any tornado we know of, ended up taking a very unpredictable turn & that is how he got caught up in it. life is strange..very sad such good people..
Not how it happened. It was a satellite vortex that hit them.
The strongest tornadoes most definitely have a straight line. If you look up various paths and note their varying wind speeds, there’s a clear difference.
The one that got them, had spun-up from the big one. Heartbreaking.. 😥 What a loss.
RIP
I believe he is with GoD now and all knowing of what he loved so much.
Just my belief..
RIP Tim, Paul and Carl.
I hope he was able to 'wind-tunnel' the tornado and get great data on that and anything else those guys could think of. Eventually, they'll have enough data to maybe slow down or prevent tornados in the future. Kudos to such dedication and sacrifice. RIP
watch?v=jVTs55W3Iag This video explains it well.
Seeing the GPS data for the TWISTEX and Weather Channel teams was horrific. They approached from the north and then followed to the east. When the tornado hooked northeast, instead of running to the north, they made the fatal mistake of trying to run east.
I frankly cannot understand why they did that. When you run, you put your back to the storm and run at a perpendicular. They were west of a NE running tornado, and ran east...
He really didn't deserve to go out like that. such a horrible way for an amazing person to go out like that.
he musta knew when he was in that cell he was in trouble, he even said those are the must dangerous when they pop up all over. rip.
The date they said is wrong it was 5/31/13 not 6/31/13
Great Tribute !
R.I.P. Tim.
Upgraded EF5 2.6 mile wide.. Wind speeds reached 296 mph with Gusts over 300 mph.
I can imagine how ya'll guys felt when ya'll heard the news. This past August I heard of a friend who was killed. I hadn't seen him in almost 4 years.
thnk you guys for teaching us so much
R.I.P I was crying when I heard we are related
they were heros
r.i.p you will always be remembered
my condolences to the samaras , young families
God bless these men may they RIP
Thank you and RIP. Those that are disrespecting them, quit being so RUDE. I dont care if you approve of what they were doing, dont disrespect the dead or their family that way. They were doing research so all the rest of us could have a better understanding of these brutes of nature.
R.I.P Tim, Paul an Carl .
R.I.P is all that i can say.
RIP, Tim, Paul & Carl.
Καλό ταξίδι στις ψυχές σας.Ζωή στις οικογένειές σας και κουράγιο σε αυτούς που αφήσατε πίσω.
R.I.P
quelle grands hommes bravo à vous 3 , vous avez savez la vie de plein de personnes graçe a vos recherche.
RIP Brother
Mis condolencias desde argentina.
Just goes to show how little even the best meteorologists still know about tornadoes.
This guy seems AWESOME!!!
I will never forget you Rest In Peace
at 1:45 he is narrating his own death. incredible and sad.
much respect
14:33 I wonder if the Cobalt in the driveway was the one they took to El Reno. 😢
Rip man
Well said my friend.
RIP LEGEND
R.I.P.... :'( that was very brutal 4 me 'cause Tim was my idol :'(
Tim seemed like a really interesting guy...the kind of guy that I would've loved to sit down and chat about weather related phenomena. He didn't strike me as the "daredevil" type. He must've just got caught in an unfortunate position that he couldn't get out of.
With regards to capturing footage of the inside of a tornado....it needs to stop!! It's been done already and you really can't see anything anyway.
And its not so much about science as it is about gaining personal attention.
at 15:35 is that white car the one he died in? May he rest in eternal peace and his son and the other man. Today is the 10 year anniversary of the horrific day ✝✝✝
I saw Reed Timmers post on the Anniversary and looked this up. Loved them all in Storm Chasers and this is just so so sad. I still wonder why they were in the car and not the truck.
RIP Tim.....
Also, regarding the vulnerability of the windows there is a film you can apply like window tint nowadays that will actually bulletproof glass up to .357 magnum rounds. I spoke to a guy who does that as a business about it when he was tinting my car windows. They mainly only put the film on flat store front windows to prevent smash and grab robberies so I don't know if you could heat them up or stretch them enough to make a tight fit on curved auto glass but it would be worth a try.
Brave guys. R.I.P.
I was about to click off after 30 seconds but I stayed to see what this amazing man said
