How to Tie a Bow Tie

  • Kirby Allison, the founder of The Hanger Project, goes over the steps on how to tie a bow tie. A bow tie is a classic accessory that can immediately elevate any man’s style. A self-tie bow tie looks much better than a pre-tied bow tie because it shows that extra hint of effort. If you can tie your shoes, you can tie a bow tie; it’s that simple.
    _________________________________________________________________
Step 1 (2:27): Place the bow tie band as close to the collar band as possible
Step 2 (3:18): Adjust one side to be 2 inches longer than the other
Step 3 (3:30): Loop into a single knot
Step 4 (3:38): Fold the short end in half (forming the front of the bow tie)
Step 5 (3:47): Pull the long end over the front and pinch the halves together
Step 4 (4:18): Fold the draping blade in half and pull through the back gap
Step 6 (4:35): Adjust as needed to get perfect

The Hanger Project The ending sold me.
I wear a tux every year for a ball (New Orleans, Mardi Gras) and afterwards we all hang out, eat and have drinks.
I'd love to untie my bow tie and look cool like that (while everyone else has on clip ons, haha).

There are how-to-tie-a-bow-tie videos that have more views, but yours is the best I've seen because it is one of the few that shows the "tricky part" of how to fold the two wings together to expose and find the hole. When I show others that move, it transforms their ability to do it.

There must be dozens...maybe hundreds...of videos on YT about how to tie a bowtie, but this is one of the best. You're easy to follow, and you don't jabber on about the history of the bowtie and other things we don't need. The ending is cool as well. Untying your tie at the end of an evening to let it drape down around your neck is one of the great pleasures of being a gentleman.

This is one of the best bow tie tutorials I have seen!!! Your suggestion to bend over and pull the bow tie closer to the top of the collar was much appreciated. I hadn't been doing that and my bow ties were often sitting too low and exposing the top of the collar. I'll incorporate that technique from now on. Thanks.

Great tutorial, Kirby. I always wash my hands with soap and hot water and dry them thoroughly before handling any sort of neck tie. This prevents natural oils, sweat and dirt on your hands from soiling the fabric of the tie.

I couldn't agree more. And tying your own bow tie is SO EASY. It's easier than tying a good neck tie! The secret is using your index finger to find the hole that you take the long end back through.

I appreciate the walk-through. It is one of the better demos and explanations available on CZcams. Yet, it is super annoying and frustrating to keep saying how easy and simple it is. If it had been, you would not have had so much trouble seeking out a source so you could learn it. What makes the other videos so bad is how fast everyone goes through the important parts of the demo. People would not be seeking help if it was not easy for THEM!! It is really demeaning to keep hearing about how easy these are from the people who have been tying these for YEARS!! It took me 4-5 tries before I could even manage to come to anything close. In the future, please take into consideration where people are starting from.

Also if u could have do everything slower I wouldn't have 2 stop & start & replay so many times. As it is I have tied it successfully once, after many starts & stops. Once unsuccessfully. thanks,

This was helpful (after watching 10x bc everyone all all of these instructional vids just say “now fold it in half” ::garbled hand movements:: That’s the part that makes no sense and sabotages the whole thing if you fold it the wrong way. I was only able to get it bc the pics were beside the vid. For future reference that’s the part to slow down on ...On another note this dude in the entire video is hands down the whitest thing I’ve ever seen on CZcams or prob every will. Lol The “liberal arts college in New England” part combined with “the club / cigar” killed me.
