It's a cleaver. We don't use tons of knives like in the West. A cleaver can do the same and costs way less. Pretty much like a wok can be used instead of the need for many pots and pans. Both are very versatile.

We have other knives as well such as a filet knife, bread knife, and paring knife to name a few. We tend to use tools that are more suitable for the task, like we wouldn't use a machete to chopped down a tree. I wouldn't be surprise that her husband has a chef's knife somewhere in his kitchen. He's using the cleaver for convenience. It would be easier for the young bride to use since she's learning, and that's my point.
