I JUST literally created some simple, Darkthrone inspired riffs today by simply playing your typical power chord but moving my ring/pinky finger to the left and to the right while strumming. So instead of just playing, say, the 5th notes of the E string and 7th note of the A string, I keep my pointer finger on the 5th of the E string note while moving my ring finger (or pinky finger) into the 6th note and then the 8th note of the A string. This allows for melody while maintaining dissonance.
The other thing I did was tremolo pick single notes of a chord (Varg does this all of the time). If you combine the two approaches you can get a raw, minimalistic Norwegian black metal vibe rooted early Darkthrone and Burzum style music.
