Freshwater Drum w/ Danielle Prewett & Frank Smethurst S2E06 | Das Boat

  • For the finale of Das Boat Season 2, MeatEater Wild Foods Contributor Danielle Prewett and longtime fishing guide Frank Smethurst, head to Red Lake, Minnesota. Red Lake is one of the most celebrated walleye fisheries in the country. But we’re not after walleye. We’re after the one fish out here that no one seems to like: freshwater drum. The locals call them sheepshead, and curse them as a nuisance by-catch, useless fish that steal bait and waste time. The thing is, freshwater drum are related to red fish and black drum, two gulf coast saltwater species that just about everyone agrees are delicious. Are these fish really that bad, or is this a case of people just believing what they're told and not experimenting for themselves? Few are better prepared to investigate that question than Danielle Prewett, a Texan with lots of experience cooking redfish. Das Boat gets one final upgrade when Minnesota guide and artist Josh Desmit stops by and christens her with a bad ass new paint job. After getting bounced around on Red Lake and learning some of the finer points of worm fishing, Danielle and Frank put freshwater drum to the taste test and prove, once and for all, that these fish are damn good. #fueledbynature

Freshwater drum are one of my favorite fish to eat. When I moved to Kansas to live with my wife on her family’s farm I got the bulk of our protein from fishing in the local creek. Our most memorable meal together was blackened drum and every time I came back from fishing, my wife would ask if I caught a drum. It became our favorite.

Steve and chosen cast always brings a thinking mans perspective to the experience that I appreciate. When out adventuring myself and being with folks that are on that same page. Do what they did rip the gills out bleed it, and right on ice. Truthfully if your keeping fish to eat this is the best method to keep any fish for the best taste. My biggest fish was a 25 pound drum caught on the Ouachita River. Had no idea what to do with it, so I gave it to a guy who said he cooks them. That fish was a heck of a fight. I thought I might have had a striper twice its size or something. I barely got it in with a beefy bass rod and 15 pound line. I caught it on a shad pattern lipless crankbait and ended up breaking a trebel hook in its jaw trying to get it out. Probably my second favorite fishing memory, after the time my dad hired a crappie guide for my 16th birthday. It is the only fish I recall having to actually fight with instead of just dragging it in. Had to fight against that behemoth as well as the current. I wish I could go back and do it again. Thank you for bringing back the memories. It's like finding your favorite childhood toy when you are 25 or 30 years old.

Was to funny when Danielle compared to a shrimp... we often fix them that way, cooking with crab boil spices..even tinting the water with food coloring to give a shrimp like appearance. They are wonderful cooked many ways... the one thing one MUST DO, when keeping Drum... is to get them on ICE!!! Their flesh will go mushy extremely fast if not kept iced down. GREAT episode. I personally love freshwater drum. I get them as bycatch when walleye trolling Lake Erie and the Detroit River. The two most important things that you have to do with this fish specifically, something that I think many anglers don't know, is bleed them and get them directly on ice. You guys did it perfectly. I sometimes take the fried fish and dip it in cocktail sauce and you basically get a Red Lobster style entree, lol.

Excellent series, just not enough episodes. We had a 18' Starcraft, same nasty green, from '71 on, spent many a day exploring the Chesapeake and her rivers!
Thanks for jump starting my memories!
Need to gift the boat to a viewer on the condition THEY video document their adventures!

FYI, I target and catch many drum up here in the great white north (Canada). Why do you ask? Thye are GREAT for smoking, birne in saltwater based brine for 12 hours and smoke low and slow for 6 - 8 hours. Everyone who tries my "smoked drum" and absolutely loves it. Give it a try, you may be surprized. Good fishing, Walter

My uncle used to target drum almost exclusively on the Mississippi River. He would put out two lines. One with a nightcrawler, one with a crawdad. Both on a heavy slip sinker rig. He said he caught more fish on the crawler, but the crawdad almost always got the big one.

This is one of my favorite videos of this series, appears that everyone had a good time. I caught and ate a lot of drum when I was growing up. I thought they were pretty tasty, not as good as crappie or bluegill, but close. Haven't had any in a long time and would love to catch some the next time I get a chance to fish Lake Erie.

You've peaked my curiosity on this one. My primary fishing spot is the Detroit River still with the pollution methods of cleaning up the river have been greatly successful I wouldn't eat a bottom filter feeder out of any body of water south of sarnia ontario canada but I may be more apt to try it out of an isolated northern lake or river. Have fun and enjoy everything outdoors.

Watched this then 2 days later caught a drum on Mississippi river in missouri and had to try it. After frying it in Andy's seasoning I highly recommend. Never knew what I was missing throwing them back all these years. I will def be keeping everyone I catch from here on out. This is why I watch Meateater.

Try rigging the line differently. Use a running sinker above the swivel and allow some slack line. Bottom feeders like drum and spotted grunter which feed on benthic invertebrates generally have more sensitive mouths and reject the bait if they feel resistance. The object is not to feel the bite but to allow them to pick up the bait properly and then swallow it.

It sounds more comparable to black drum here on the gulf coast. The size sample in this video is the size black drum we keep here for eating we call them puppy drum , as they get pretty big when mature. Great video

I'm from South Louisiana, grew up catching them in hoop nets (targeting catfish). We always used them for crawfish bait or cut bait for turtles. As a kid I do remember eating a few freshwater drum. My dad and his buddies always called them gaspergoo (not sure on spelling).
