Well, that was an unexpected pleasant ride on a completely unfamiliar topic I had never heard of before. Wouldn't have guessed I'll find myself spending an hour of my life like this. Thanks Very much appreciated
This has been really interesting, I never heard of grime. It reminds me of when I did research for my own curiosity, on Detroit Techno, also because I have a strong emotional connection with Detroit and it's history. Underground rave scenes in the UK always seems pretty wild though, and I loved Jungle.
You hit the nail on the head man. I'd say the best comparison for how grime started is how juke morphed into footwork for the dancers by becoming darker and more syncopated.
Likewise! I looked into it speciically because this docu was so well done! It's not particularly my kind of music (although I think I will be using it for working out, genre seems perfect for that), I still had a blast watching this. I guess that speaks to Timbah's talent; it's pretty difficult to keep somebody's attention for an hour (especially mine) while speaking about something they couldn't care less about! I love getting a glimpse into worlds and cultures I previously didn't even know existed, it's so interesting!
i've just recently begun digging into dril and grime music and this is such a deep, loving dive into a very specific niche that i now have a much more educated appreciation of. the genuine love with which you cover anything you discuss is so obvious and sets you apart from other creators. thank you for your work, i'm a huge fan.
This video is crazy, appreciate the narrative and all the research. Brought back mad memories hanging out in NW, my late friend AJ had the Flirta adlibs down to a tee, R.I.P
mate this is so well done. i love the fact that you didn't keep it too narrow; seeing skeng and labels like keysound, bandulu, night slugs and hessle in this vid had me impressed.
I'm not even halfway through, and I just had to pause and comment on how well produced this video is! 11:26 - 11:36 is so fucking nice, keep going man.
I wasn't too familiar with grime, but this was really interesting. The love you bring to it reminds me of how hard I fell in love with late 90s progressive trance and house music some decade+ after its golden age (even though it's a completely different genre). There's little better than discovering an amazing music scene and diving in deep.
Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Myself, I only got into the grime scene a few years back in around 2019 but I've already explored so much of the catalogue that certain slangs are becoming part of my daily life. Anyways, top tier video and I hope Flirta D gets his flowers from this video. Generally one of the most unique and charismatic guys to come from the grime scene. Not to mention his vocal techniques are mad. He is a grime artist and a beatboxer in one and I'm here for it 🔥 🔥 🔥
Been getting really into video essays recently and finding out that Timbah makes videos (banging producer) and they're on real good topics is pretty fuckin great!
Flirta d is criminally underrated! I cant state the joy I felt when I saw this documentary in my recommend thank you so much for the effort you've putt in A personal cupla favourite flirta moment is off flirta d wheel of tunnel vision 2 and when he merked d double with the drive by bars

Sam McKenzie bro dubstep and grime are very closely related. Skream - Midnight Request Line comes to mind. Cos its 140bpm theres a lot of sets that play dubstep with grime mcs over the top
@@yolo-ed9dk im aware theyre similar but have always preferred dubstep. Grime is less consistent on the beat and maybe a bit too much vocal focus but that's purely my opinion (with a nod to the many producers who mix and match a bunch of different styles into their unbrella genre). I love a lot of garage and grime instrumentals but ive been less exposed to it than Deep Medi and Artikal etc.

Wow this was absolutely amazing growing up listening to grime just about every single day aspiring to be an mc/producer it’s guys like thus who inspired me to create my own style and version of how I do grime so much respect for this right here it’s 🔥🔥🔥
This reminds me of Washington DC's gogo scene. There's so much energy in the music, but it has been around for decades and hasn't gotten big because it doesn't really translate to recordings.

Don't forget the influence of Jamaican reggae dancehall on grime mc's. General Levy ofcourse was originally a dancehall artist before getting commercial success with jungle hits. But other artists come to mind that were creative with delivery and use of voice and rhythmic style like Pompidou with his synthesizer/rockstone voice, Daddy Freddy using as many syllables between words, before him fast chat dj's like Peter Metro, Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture & more, or the weird screechy noises of Major Mackeral, and I can't find the right example now but I'm sure that hundred male reggae artists did a female line in their lyrics in tunes in the 80's. In general the use of eccentric noises or trademark slurs, that grime mc's have to let you know it's them, really comes from reggae dancehall. The context was quite similar that you had a session with a whole bunch of mc's and you had to fight for the mic and stick out (pompidou even refers to this in his lyrics, that he had to change his style, cause an other mc pirate him style). I guess I could go on for some time, and you could trace this back way more in to the Soundsystem culture and talking over records in Jamaica starting in the 50's/60's. I should make a video about it ;-) Anyway, thanks for the vid, enjoyed it a bunch!
I"ve known flirta for many years now and when I first met him I was already a fan. He's not only a completely unique MC but a really genuinely nice guy. Listen to his tunes and sets from radio is great and always blow my mind but if you ever get lucky enough to hear him MC in person in a rave he will blow your mind. You just get sucked in and so gassed. Usually in a rave people can't follow deep lyrics anyway so that's not important but all the mad noises just captures people instantly. You don't have to hear every word of it for it to make sense, it's just an energy.
bro your documentary gave me chills up my spine, as I also found out about the UK Grime scene in early 2010s, and Flirta D was one of my few favorite artists, He also did sessions with Marcus Nasty mcing together with Shantie Mc in a set which has now been taken down, but his style could fit in with so many different genres! Amazing talent, and he will forever be remembered amongst the die hard grime fans! Thank you so much for this documentary, you did a terrific job producing this
