    Competition is good for the market. I appreciate you mentioning the difference of USB-C ports. Big reason why I upgraded to the RCII from the RCI. I hope Rode is watching this space and adds the Automix in a firmware update. Benefit of having a digital mixer.
    As always, thank you for the time you put in for these reviews to help the consumer in their research. Stay safe.

      @@TDCIYB77 It's certainly not as flashy, but the quality is fantastic for the money. I've used it for a year, and I love it. It seems so under-appreciated. I chose it over the original Rodecaster. The Mixcast doesn't have many of the new features of the Rodecaster 2, but it does everything I need, and what it does - it does very well. Just my opinion.

      My setup consists mainly of a digital piano (in stereo), a mic and a guitar. Sometimes 2 guitars & 2 mics. Right now I'm running everything into a Yamaha MG10ux and out into 2 E/V Evolve 50. I was ready to upgrade to a Boss Gigcaster 8 when I saw this mixer. This would be used strictly as a mixer/audio interface/recorder (with a Mac Studio).
      I know the Boss has tons of guitars & vocal effects but I love the screen and extra inputs on the DLZ (I have external guitar effects as well). Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

  • @framelessfilms
    @framelessfilms Před rokem +2

    It looks really great, and I can see where it would be ideal for many people. I opted for the similar Boss Gigcaster 8 though, because I am primarily a guitarist and singer. There are certainly advantages to each, but to me the following were important. 1) 32 bit recording. When I use this, I will be both in the musician and sound engineer roles, and I don’t want to have to worry about setting exact levels. 2) Guitar and singing oriented DSP. I especially like the guitar effects foot-switch options. 3) Pre-fade individual track recording. I want to hear with sweetening but record raw audio with no DSP. 4) USB and 9v power. This is super convenient for musicians. My Elite Acoustics amp has internal battery power and USB and 9V power outputs for external music gear. 5) Hi-Z guitar input. 6) Talkback functions and built in mics. This wouldn’t matter during a podcast, but is really helpful in recording live music sessions. In all sorts of other ways however, I can see the appeal of the Mackie DLZ, even for music.

    I don't think you mentioned it, but I apologize if you did: does the DLZ have a feature/setting to mute monitor speakers when a mic is turned on? That's a pretty important feature if it's being used as a console mixer for a streaming radio station. I know the RodeCaster Pro does that.

    • @clemradio
      @clemradio Před rokem

      I’ve seen in another video that it doesn’t, so far. Now with the Ethernet port there might be updates coming, but I’m not sure. I guess now you’ll have to press the mute button above the monitors fader before lifting up the mic fader.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před rokem

      Not that I see and with the way I use it, I’d want the option to NOT do that. But a firmware update with the option to turn that feature on or off seems like it may be possible.

    80dB gain is so attractive but latency is not. When Panasonic has latency through HDMI, a mixer has some, then, it looks quite complicated situation to deal with. Would it be better to use XLR connection on the audio mixer from camera manufacturer to reduce latency as much as possible?

    Starting to explore the DLZ features, I noticed that adjusting the Output Delay of the LR output channel (to fix sync in a video streaming setup), also delays the audio in the headphone outputs. I found a way to avoid the headphone delay and thought it may be useful to others. The LR Output Delay will affect the headphones when the headphone Mode is set to Standard. Setting the Mode to Custom, or Quick Mix will not include the delay. So unless you are using one of the headphone outs to feed your streaming switcher and want the delay you set in the LR channel setup, just change mode to Quick Mix, and the delay will be gone, and the headphone mix will use the fader levels just like Standard. Edit: Also discovered that in Quick Mix/Custom Mode you won't hear the reverb or delay from the channel sends. (The pad effects are still heard though.)

      I use the ATEM Mini series. But I run the balanced audio out of the DLZ to the balanced XLR inputs on a canon c200. If you plan to run the DLZ to an ATEM Mini, you’ll need to use a cable the has two 1/4” TS connectors to a single 3.5mm TRS cable.

    You mentioned instrument inputs, I didn't see any indication of Hi-Z input, do you know if it's good for guitars and so on? The only other of these that work properly in that aspect are the RCP II and the new Boss Gigcaster series which would be fantastic to review if you get the chance.

    Cheers!

    Do you have any way to test the preamps as to the noise level? I see lots of very positive reviews of the dlc, many of which are from people who got it for free from Mackie. I'd like to see an unbiased measurement of the preamps to compare them with other brands.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yes, I have a dummy XLR connector with a 150ohm resistor across pins 2 & 3 to simulate the load of most dynamic microphones without adding the signal from a microphone. The DLZ's preamps produced less self noise than the RODECaster Pro II by a couple of dB (as a reference).

    When I read about the Mackie DLZ Creator I ordered it on the spot. I was very excited for all of the features and it’s possibilities. Everything worked great except one key feature, it would not record audio from my MacBook. We have a podcast studio and need to record audio from zoom, CZcams, and other internet sites. The audio would be distorted and high pitched. I called tech support but all they said was it was because of the sampling rates and that I needed to make sure they were the same as the Mackie. I have never had an issue with my Rode Caster 1 or 2. I may have gotten a bad unit but I had the return it because I have employees who need plug and play and are not tech savvy.
