- A heart attack is a medical emergency. It usually occurs when a blood clot blocks the blood flow to the heart. Symptoms include tightness or pain in the chest, neck, back, or arms, abnormal heartbeat, etc. Treatment ranges from lifestyle changes and cardiac rehabilitation to medication, stents, and bypass surgery. High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when the blood pressure increases to unhealthy levels. The blood pressure measurement takes into account how much blood is passing through the blood vessels and the amount of resistance the blood meets while the heart is pumping.
