Euron Sucks! | Book to Show Comparison

  • To put it shortly Euron is one of the most evil, terrifying, and mysterious men in the entire asoiaf book series. He spent years in exile sailing the oceans. In comparison, the show version of Euron is a total loser! If there is an example of a worse book to show character adaptation that Euron Greyjoy then I am not aware.

After things Ramsay had done in the show, imagine someone being worse than him. What would he really have to do? Like, really, imagine worse things than what Ramsay did. At what point would it become straight up distasteful? Sexual abuse was already overused as hell in the series. We get it, you're not afraid to be controversial. Hours of screentime were sacrificed to show explicit physical and mental torture done on Theon, other hours either showing or discussing rape... I'd like to see more of an actual game of thrones which is why this version of Euron does just fine.
He's way more interesting than Ramsay, that's for sure, and the best parts of the show in my view have had to do with characters like the Spider, Littlefinger, Tywin, Olenna, characters which aim at obtaining their goals through complex, impressive means and play mind games on each other. Or captivating personalities such as the Hound or Jaime and their development.
Fuck the entire chase after the villain which is going to be more horrible, more sadistic, more edgy than anyone else ever. Enough time was wasted for the sake of cheap shock, nobody is going to flinch over it anymore because 1) it's fiction, 2) fandom became insensitive to it due to it's abundance in the show.

    • @markcobuzzi826
      @markcobuzzi826 Před 4 lety +9

Having just finished reading “A Feast For Crows”, I tried to think of how D&D could have at least done something with the Dragonbinder, even without changing the show’s storyline too much. This below was just a thought...
For instance, Euron Greyjoy could have one of his pirates blow the horn to intimidate all of Asha/Yara and Theon’s supporters, before getting cooked alive from the inside. I do not know if these two kinds of sound-effects could blend together well. But the description of the horn’s otherworldly sound in the book made me think of the Haradrim’s horn in “The Return of the King“ and the assimilated Bennings’ howl in John Carpenter’s “The Thing“. After showing it off, Euron can further use the horn as a tool to persuade the Ironborn to meet with Daenerys, since it could allegedly summon and bend dragons to one’s will.
In the equivalent to Season 8 Episode 4, Daenerys and her fleet could get into an actual skirmish with Euron’s fleet, rather than “kind of” forgetting about them. Euron orders his men to test out the Dragonbinder, once Daenerys is at her most vulnerable point. Both Drogon and Rhaegal seem to be disoriented and nearly hypnotized by the horn, allowing Euron to try skin-changing into Rhaegal. Euron appears to briefly gain control over Rhaegal, while Dany can do nothing about it, until the henchman blowing the horn is finally burnt from within. In that moment, Rhaegal is able to break free from Euron’s “warging” and fight back against the Iron Fleet, but he is now surrounded by ships and Euron gives the order to loose the scorpions.
After Rhaegal gets skewered through the eye with one of the ballista bolts, though, he crashes onto the ship carrying the Dragonbinder. The horn gets thrown into the sea and washes ashore later. Afterwards, Daenerys finds the Dragonbinder and examines it, wondering if “the unburnt” can wield the true power residing in the horn. Daenerys discovers that she can blow the horn and survive, unlike Euron’s henchmen.
During the penultimate episode, one of Daenerys’ new tactics is to blow the horn herself, while flying over King’s Landing and burning Cersei’s forces. With the horn’s sound blasting through the battlefield, even the Lannister soldiers manning the giant scorpions start to lose their composure, explaining why they suddenly have a hard time shooting Drogon. Maybe Drogon himself could also be visibly emboldened, when a “true dragon” like Daenerys wields it in battle. Or this could simply be saved until the final episode, when she is delivering her speech and could blow it in front of her followers, to demonstrate her perceived divinity.

@Vok250 GRRM doesn’t actually put too much fantasy into his fantasy either though (in comparison to all the other fantasy genres out there filled with elves, goblins, wizards, and such). What makes Euron so special in their reality is that he is a rare exception!
Euron is supposed to be someone that is _way_ out of their typical world; someone with ambitions far beyond the mundane politics and wars of their world. It’s why even a hardened viking-warrior such as his brother, Victarion, is so extremely weary of Euron. Despite Victarion being described as physically bigger and stronger than his brothers, he fears to face Euron alone and is haunted by the mere thought of Euron everywhere he goes. Victarion would rather storm through the battlements of a castle or raid a fleet of enemy ships, but he dares not to openly challenge Euron (yet). It’s because he knows that Euron is into some seriously dark shit of the occult and is a highly unnatural individual in their lives as viking sea-raiders.

This is exactly why I avoided reading ASOFAI till after GOT is over. Obviously it was never going to be as good as the canon.

Many great animes are made before the manga was finished. They simply stayed true to the writing. If you adhere to a 4-5 episodes per LN and 2 episodes per manga standard, you will ensure that your anime is extremely close to the source.
The much bigger problems are animes that do 2 episodes per ln.

Ideas of ice and fire I submit for worst book to show adaptation the character of Littlefinger. Littlefinger is so brilliantly written in the books, he's playing sides off of each other, fostering civil war, playing the game. But in the show he's utterly shit upon. One of the smartest characters in asoiaf, his ideas simply make no sense in the show. Why would he give Sansa to Ramsay ? She's more valuable to keep in his possession. He just does what the plot requires him to do, regardless of what his character would do. Chess piece storytelling. It's such a polar opposite of the book, where his character and motivations drove the story through his plotting and actions that were actually smart. Every action he took was in service to his goals.
They got Euron pretty bad too though. And Doran/Ellaria. And the Tyrells.

    • @edisonmichael6345
      @edisonmichael6345 Před 5 lety +26

Even though Littlefinger is a master manipulator on the books, the best thing Martin did to him (in my opinion) was the subversion! (and I don't mean making him suddenly dumb like the show does)
He is constantly making crazy alegations, like the first thing he says when me meet the character on the first book was that he and Catelyn lost their virginity together but that she was forced to marry a Stark. Since we, as readers, have access to Catelyn as a narrator, we know that to be false right as he says it, but it DOES sound like the kind of lie a lecherous and pervy jilted lover would create, so we at once create an idea of what kind of character he is and misjudge his motivations for the first of maaany times. Then we have his betrayal of Ned, him moving his pieces for ever greater power... but then... then we have the moment in the Eyre when Lysa is confessing her love for him, and he is playing the game... until she, offhandedly, confesses that, when he was a kid, delirious with fever, she pretended to be Catelyn and slept with him. That gives him pause, Petyr goes blank for a moment... and procedes to declare undying love for Cat and throw Lysa through the Moondoor.
A few chapters later, Sansa comments that after that day he begun to go slowly insane, shattered. One half of him, that Sansa calls "Petyr" is protective, of her, like a father, and very much depressed, the other, which she calls "the Littlefinger" is kind of derranged and sometimes confuses her for her mother, gets drunk, and cries himself to sleep or something...
So, hear me out: that was when it hit me, Lysa pretended to be Catelyn, raped little Petyr Baelish and that led him to believe Cat was in love with him. Thus misguided, he challenged her fiancé for a duel, lost, interpreted her pleading to spare his life as a sacrifice she made for love (when she did that because she had no idea why the hell her friend challenged Stark in the first place, she thought he was just being a naïve boy -ironically, she was right but not for the reason whe though).
After that, look what we get:
      - Cat one day appears on LF doors (in the first book).
-He professes love for her, she thinks that's just a nostalgic infatuation and refuses him
      - He responds to that with something to the effect of "well, I know she is too honorable to be unfaithful, that perfect woman of my dreams, I better get her husband out of the picture so she is free to confess herself to me without feeling guilty".
-He betrays Ned, "coincidently" making Cat a widow. Now he only has to wait... dang, a war, that complicate things, a good chance to make himself a noble high enough to marry her, though... "I wonder who is holding Harrenhal...".
(correct me if I'm wrong, but he never chance to meet Catelyn again after that, does he?)
-His machination, unintentionally lead to Cat's death.
-He bets all his coins in getting Sansa, because she looks exactly like her mother when "they" fell in love. He tells Sansa his version of the events in saying that he slept with Catelyn and that she never really loved her husband, he is being, as far as he knows, honest, but we have no way to know that.
-Lysa confesses that SHE was the one who slept with him. He puts 2 and 2 together.
      Her lie costs him:
-the loss of his place as a ward in Riverun as a kid
      -his naïvete
-the chance of keeping his friendship with Cat after she married, if the duel never happened
-the Seven knows what chances of having a healthy relationship with someone if he was not too busy believing that the one he loved was into him, somewhere else, both separated only by her honor and his low social standing.
-ultimatelly, Catelyn herself, because Lysa's lie resulted in a snowball that quite cruelly ended with LF actions being the cause of Cat's death. And, at that point, he KNEW he was indirectly guilty of her death and now, knew it was for nothing, that she never even knew he loved her, so all his plans and the war was... moot. A sick joke of destiny, if you ask me.
I would say that's enough to make a man push a woman through a door and go a little bonkers.
Soooo, Lf is the smartest man in any room he is in, but life had him be fooled only once, and by the least inteligent woman in all of Westeros: Lysa Tully-Arryn. That doesn't make him less of a genius, but makes him more humane in his failing.
I'm pretty sure about my interpretation of events, but all of that was just implied in the book.
Implying is something Martin does quite wonderfully.
