OSH Arrival (You won't find this in the NOTAM!)

  • Airventure 2017 arrival to OSH, went a bit differently than planned.
    Ripon - Fisk - 27 downwind - 36L downwind - base - final.
We had reviewed the NOTAM that morning (again) and were well prepared (we thought).
Approaching Ripon, CTAF broadcast indicated 27 and 36 L/R in use. Lined up behind a really slow high-wing (90 knots? Pfft! Try 70!), and followed the railroad tracks towards the Fisk. Halfway to Fisk, ground tells everyone that 36 is closed (WTF?) and that everyone is going to 27. Okay, no problem...change freq over Fisk to ground for 27. In downwind and about to pull power back for base turn, we get word that 27 is now closed, and 36 L/R are back in use (double WTF?)
Everyone in the pattern for 27 is directed to go out over the lake, turn South on a wide downwind (right traffic) for 36 L/R. We do, turn base a bit late to make room for a T-6 coming in on the warbird arrival, turn final for 36L, cleared to land, touchdown, and GET OFF THE RUNWAY!
    Welcome to Oshkosh. :-)

Perhaps a temporary closure on 27? I have seen them divert inbound traffic down the shore to 36 when this happens, or they have a backup of departing traffic on 27. Having two north-south runways gives the controllers flexibility to handle high and low performance arrivals and mix in traffic arriving on the normal Fisk approach to 36. It's a bummer to be in the pattern and have them bounce you all the way back to Green Lake/Ripon. Nice landing. Right on the numbers.

A different set of numbers, but RIGHT ON THE NUMBERS!

Since you didn't capture radio traffic, would have been nice if you'd captioned or annotated it with tower instructions and notes about the situation that created this highly unusal set of maneuvers....
