      100%!! It's been happening in Rugby Union for decades... the players get bigger, stronger and faster, yet the game gets softer! Rules constantly changed to take the old skool brutal physicality out of the contest (in the tackle, at the breakdown, rucks, mauls etc!) - and the players are far less likely to use dirty tactics orb properly fight now, because there are so many cameras everywhere and you can't get away with anything (plus the financial punishments are massive when caught!)

    Remember that these players are much MUCH larger than in the 80s and 90s when the game was more balanced between run/pass, offense&defense. In the AIkmen/Smith era, they had a HUGE offensive line with guys at 280 to 300 pounds. Nowadays, that's the LOW END of linemen weight. You watch kids on Alabama's line, you will see that they are already wearing knee braces because they're too heavy for human joints! These sized-people ended the 2000 yard rushing season. Terrell Davis was the last one, and that was 20 years ago.

    It's happened in basketball as well. I'm not impressed when people have 30 or 40 point games. They've made it almost illegal to play defense. People nowadays go to the hole with moves that were considered offensive fouls in the 80s and 90s. Everyone shoots threes because nerds said that that was the way to score more points. And defenders are handicapped because the ball handlers can carry the ball with one hand under it causing a timing issue when gathering for a shot.

    The only thing Bill isn't accounting for is the NFL's need to counter the effects of PEDs on the sport. 60 years ago it WASN'T like getting run over by a Mack truck being tackled by every 3rd string cornerback in the game back then. Now, they've all needled themselves into 225 lb. mega-beasts running a 4.3 sec 40. The GREATS of yesteryear would hit "average" next to today's chemistry experiment that is the professional American football player, and the QBs, RBs, and WRs--as well as all the O Linemen--DO need some measure of protection from these lab experiments in uniform.

      Completely true. If you have ever played a contact sport at a reasonably high-level, you know big hits that injure are not fun. Using hockey as an example, the players are so much more talented now than they previously were in the 90s and early 00's that the result of the game remaining the same would be constant career-ending injuries. It is a bunch of armchair quarterbacks, who never fucking played, opining for the old times when people would get concussions and then be out there the next game with mush for brains.

    • @Deon2020
      @Deon2020 Před 3 lety +2

      My actual problem with it is that there's no balance. A ball carrier can lower his helmet and put it in a tackler's chin and there's no call. But when a ball carrier lowers his shoulder to protect the ball, and gets hit in the head because its on the SAME PLANE as his abdomen, it's a 15 yrd penalty. Plus, you can tackle everyone else, but you just have to hug the QB. It is frustrating. I remember seeing Aaron Rodgers pretend like he was going to run out of bounds, so the Tackler pulled up. Then Rodgers turned upfield for a few more yards. Thats why I don't like it. It's unfair.

    MMA would be an outlier here, the sport has gotten less offense heavy and far more technical. The early days were nothing but human cock fighting with advertisements being nothing but a show of blood sport. MMA now is a legitimate sport, well regulated and promoted professionally. Heck we event went from KO of the night to performance of the nigh to show the sport is getting away from the brutal knock out aspect. Sure KO fighters will always be loved but if Francis and his new wrestling showed anything, it's that people respect genuine skill.

      The UFC sucks now. Everyone who makes it there barely kicks or grapples anymore. They are just throwing big straights and haymakers at each other because they are scared of being KO'd too easily and ruining their big money chance. Same thing Dana used to criticize about Boxing back in the day.

    NBA is so fucking boring to watch last decade or so. Every fucking year the league comes up with rules to soften up the game and make it more flashy so a casual fan gets what he wants. This year the refs handing out T's like advertisment papers. Just say the magic term and one and you cought a T.

    Is it like governement? Because making something worse while claiming it's in the name of making it "better" is some snake-oil salesman crap that's on the level of what you'd hear from a used car salesman. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen... or the field/court in this case.

    ahhh this nonsense of wanting this money train to keeping growing is what's destroying sports. It is happening across the pond European football and the whole supper league issue which I am happy the fans made it known that this is not what the sport is supposed to mean. But the in-game rules have gotten soft over the years and that is just a buzz kill.
